  1. okay....well I guess it needs a repeat listen. My bad. LouieB
  2. Every time I pass the Loft I hope to see people, but never do. LouieB
  3. Regarding this album....its one of two that that 801 made (I think) and both are just okay. it is music of its time and not necessarily that memorable. And long ago I also got Ray Manzanera and Ray Manzerak confused. LouieB
  4. I wonder if he was at the Cleveland Clinic? (Just down the street from La Cave where there VU used to play a lot.) Hospitals are dysfunctional, but you can't really do without them if you need something as serious as this. Everyone is getting old I guess. Hope he recovers. LouieB
  5. Bachmann's leaving the House may be good politically, but what a colorful figure!!! She will be missed and she still has a year and a half to go. LouieB
  6. I was offered a ticket to see Wayne Shorter that night too at Symphony Center, but think I will opt for this gig.. It is well worth checking this venue out. Good sound and a large room. (I am sure Son Volt will be good, but I was so bored at the last show a few years back it is hard to think about another show of theirs.) LouieB
  7. If you live in Chicago and want to see Glenn play actual percussion, he is at Constellation on June 7 at 9 PM with Jeff Parker, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and Mike Reed. LouieB
  8. I don't catch your drift, but okay. Both were from Chicago though. If you are saying Ray was not the musician that Benny was, well I sort of catch that. Despite being a great musician Goodman was kind of a dick and kids when I was growing up could have cared less about him and his old fashioned swing music, while we totally dug the Doors. LouieB
  9. There is a review in the New Yorker this week of this album and I can't tell from the article if it is good or bad. Weird. LouieB
  10. Okay you never said it. And yes gun violence is down. So let's let everyone have more guns and ammo. Really I don't know what you are saying anymore. There seemed to be a whole lot of discussion about why any restrictions on guns were a bad thing and I seem to remember you taking that side, but forgive me if I am mistaken. Remember I gave up the argument for more restrictions weeks ago. I really don't care, but apparently the parents of the kids who died at Newtown do, I never lost anyone to gun violence so I don't (yet) have a dog in that hunt or whatever the expression is. I would li
  11. A columnist wrote about this in the Trib today. It is always devastating I suppose because people (young and old) die all the time. The thing about rock musicians is that unlike the older forms of music which went out of style while many were fairly young and prolific, even younger people are fans of former generations of rock musicians. When Benny Goodman died it didn't particularly bother me, but for someone in their 20s or 30s today, even Levon Helm and Ray Manzerek have some relevance (more Levon than Ray, but still.) Bob Dylan is still well regarded; when he goes a lot of people ;are
  12. Exactly. Miles hired Coltrane (fired and rehired him). Trane was at Miles beck and call. See above. LouieB
  13. Well they were sidemen to her, in that she was already an establish solo artist. But they were bands after that and finally the Eagles. I would say that Joe Walsh is a sideman in the Eagles I guess. Much of this thread isn't making sense. Was George Harrison a member of the Beatles or was he hired as the guitar player? The more apt example is from the definition given above. So Lester Young was hired by Count Basie to play sax, Lester also was a sideman for Billie Holiday. He eventually went on to become famous in his own right. Duke Ellington hired many musicians to be in his orche
  14. It's still a mystery to me why people who want guns want anyone to have them without any kind of accountability. But it's okay. When the carnage gets bad enough things will change. Enough people just haven't died yet. LouieB
  15. Joe Walsh was the lead guitarist of the James Gang. He was only hired as a sideman of the Eagles later. LouieB
  16. It is sad that it takes the death of someone to reconcile, but that's just the way it is. LouieB
  17. This is the album of the week. The PR is everywhere. LouieB
  18. As someone who works for the government, this goes to my ongoing point that we want the government to do stuff unless we don't and then we blame them for not doing it well because government bureaus don't have the personal to get done what needs to be done. The article about all this in the NY Times on Sunday was very illuminating. The tax code created 501c(4) organizations and when there was a crush of applications the IRS couldn't keep up with the backlog and tried to take the easy way out by profiling some by name that might not have been eligible for a tax break. Organizations on both t
  19. The print article on Ray in the Chicago Tribune today (not the one on the website) had information about him that I did not know; that he grew up on Chicago's South Side, went to St. Rita's High School (which was a boys school despite the name) and listened to Chicago blues on the radio and attended concerts of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Doors are so closely identified with LA that I never gave it any thought as to where he might really be from. So I guess he can be counted in the pantheon of Chicago musical greats. As I said on Facebook yesterday that the Doors could be the most m
  20. At the time, no one blamed Bush for 9/11. We were relatively unified as a country. (Well after the fact it became clear that perhaps Bush's folks didn't connect the dots that well.) Now with Bengahzi the fact that there was confusion within the first 48 hours as to what exactly happened and maybe some wrangling between the CIA and the State Department caused more confusion, but really there were few disagreements about this issue when the facts finally came out. It is nothing but partisan BS now. And the disinformation being spread by Fox News is ridiculous. LouieB
  21. Blaming anyone for a random act of terror is totally useless. Even in countries (such as Israel) where they are constantly on the alert for such events, terrorists still manage to blow people up. So this constant harping on who is to blame for this is just stupid. My point was not that we should blame the government (although there were indications that there was going to be a terrorist strike around 9/11) for this every time. Shit happened under Bush, it happened under Obama and it will happen under whomever is the next President. Nothing was going to stop the guys in Boston or the folks
  22. Actually I would prefer the Illinois General Assembly figure out what to do about the state pension shortfall instead of spending time on designating a state rock song. LouieB
  23. Aguirre is one of my all time favorite movies. That's all. Have also seen Fitzcarraldo and the documentary on the making of the movie. All good. This doesn't help anything, just saying. LouieB
