There are issues he brought to light that at least in some circles make him a hero. I do think we needed to know about the wholesale data gathering. Other aspects of national security, well it is a toss up. Elsberg brought to light documents about the VIetnam war and certainly did not run. He knew exactly what he was doing and in true civil disobedient style stood his ground. Only time will really tell if he is a hero or a bumbling coward, but so far he seems not to know what he is doing and didn't give much thought to the next steps. LouieB

I agree totally. Her voice is much more subdued than usual, which I get the feeling is a question of age at this point. Putting her in a more low key musical environment may have been a conscious decision at this point. LouieB

There seems to be much less buzz about this album than the first Tweedy produced Mavis album. I did play a cut on the radio the other day though. LouieB

This guy is so screwed. Imagine sitting endlessly in a Moscow airport trying to figure out your limited options. Where is he going to go? Still craving attention and having what he considers valuable information, it must be positively cinematic. Can't wait for the made for TV movie about him. At this point, no matter how you feel about his information, he has very little future ahead. (I keep imagining how long a beard the guy is growing.) LouieB

kind of a big advertisement. LouieB

I sort of skimmed this article and will read it in depth soon. It hits on some salient points. Interesting stuff. Maybe I should have said, good fucking luck. Undoubtedly he will either end up in a backwater somewhere forgotten or beg to come back to the USofA within a year or two. At some point, one of the governments he is negotiating with will relieve him of his four computers and leave him with no leverage at all. LouieB

I was half kidding about him being a kid, but go back and read the articles from a couple of days ago in the NY Times. They are fascinating, if true and I have no reason to believe they aren't true.(He was freaked out about the thought of being imprisoned because he wouldn't be able to have a computer, etc.) he has a long hard road ahead of him that he may not be prepared for Basically Snowden had no plan and eventually he will end up just a sad much older man who can't ever come home. I suppose he did what he did for all the right reasons, but it may not really amount to very much in the

I watched both of these. Pretty interesting. Lou

Chicago Magazine showing a flash of relevance. Nice work. LouieB.

Snowden was and is basically a kid. Meanwhile, good on the 5 justices who dumped DOMA yesterday. What's with the other four? LouieB

Oh yea,, that's true. I was kind of kidding about the solo album thing, but he plays a surprising number of different instruments including a variety of keyboards and sings back-up. LouieB

He's Bob Dylan. He used to say more, back when he was young. Now that he is old he doesn't have to talk. Besides Dylan has written hundreds of great songs, Jay Farrar has written the same okay song over and over again. LouieB

I am surprised this thread has so little traffic. This Mavis album is the closest thing Jeff has come to doing a solo album so far, since he plays a wide variety of instruments, wrote a number of songs, and Spenser plays the drums on nearly every track. LouieB

Exactly. Once Martin starting kicking the shit out of him, I suppose he had to kill him. The question that will need to be decided I suppose by the jury is why the hell did he even get into that scuffle with Martin so that he could get his head bashed against the pavement and then have to shoot him. Hixter won't answer that I am sure. LouieB
-
I'm ignoring it. Meanwhile that dude Zimmerman was carrying a gun and look what happened to him. He felt empowered by carrying a gun and ended up getting into a scuffle and ended up killing someone. Good work. LouieB

Why is anyone arguing about this gun shit anymore? Clearly you can get all the guns and ammo you want just about anywhere you live. ANY restriction on the timing of getting those things is what Hixter is objecting to. Why bother even arguing this. Everyone can get a gun; end of argument. Meanwhile other interesting political shit is going down and we are still beating this very dead horse. LouieB

Anyone listen to this now that it is officially out? I gave it a listen yesterday. LouieB

I didn't watch the video, ,but now this gun thing has become a fixation. We begin talking about other stuff and the thread keeps getting turned back to guns. Long ago we agreed you get to buy and keep guns. Can we move on now? People in all states have and use guns. People get killed (see Trayvon Martin) in every state in the union. They get killed here in Chicago nearly every day. We have guns, both legal and illegal and we use them. I guess there is no other problem that needs fixing, since we figured out and agree on all the rest. LouieB

Edward Snowden = Jason Bourne? International man of mystery!!! LouieB

This seems accurate. LouieB

Yea, we really compounded a non-problem by making it a worse non-problem. LouieB;

wow, I would have missed this if someone hadn't pointed out approximately where the issue was. All I can say is stay OUT of any of the political threads. You were bored, others weren't. I would have loved this set. Having seen Wilco innumerable times, a set of covers sounds like a blast. I always like seeing Wilco cover others material. Just one comment. Who in the audience was seeing Wilco for the first time? I would guess hardly anyone, since getting to Solid Sound and paying for it would e a deterrent for most non-fans. For the greatest hits, go see them with Bob Dylan. I am su

I kind of figured that out. Where do the fireworks begin, on what page? I can look myself I suppose. LouieB

Not trying to stir the pot here, but since I did not attend Solid Sound I am not reading the threads. Can someone post up the link as to what this is about. I must admit that I was jealous of y'all who did see the covers set. Having seen Wilco a lot, I would have enjoyed seeing them cover a bunch of others tunes particularly with the guest musicians sitting in. As far as people talking at Wilco shows, they always do further back, so I don't know what the problem is with that. I was not upfront at the Hideout last year (I often am upfront) but at that show the crowd was extremely chatty.

Am I the last to know that The Replacements are playing shows?
LouieB replied to Hixter's topic in Someone Else's Song
It would be fun, but it also would be uncomfortable. Reunions sometimes have weird edges. With the Replacements, it is only two of the four original guys and now that Westerberg has gotten over whatever he had to get over after a few decades, it might work out, or it might not. I can't even imagine Jeff taking a back seat to Jay Farrar at this point, not when he can lead one of the best bands in the world. Doing the occasional one off (like Golden Smog, which he hasn't done in many years) is conceivable I suppose, but Uncle Tupelo would be a stretch. LouieB
