Am I the last to know that The Replacements are playing shows?
LouieB replied to Hixter's topic in Someone Else's Song
I didn't realize there were two Replacement threads. I also saw them last night and they were great. The Pixies were really boring. I did not catch their earlier shows right after they reformed, but I would not go out of my way to see them again. Meanwhile the Mats kicked ass, although the festival conditions were horrid. I think there is a good chance that there will be a regular Replacements tour. They seemed to be very happy to be playing and were very engaged and tight. LouieB -
I bought a copy of this when it was cut out back at the end of the first vinyl era. Anyway, I saw The Replacements (well half the Replacements or the Replacements with some replacements or Paul Westerberg singing the songs of the Replacements) last night and beside the horrid festival conditions at Riot Fest they totally kicked ass. Really great. They were tight, crunchy, and played the hits and other stuff. In fact they were just loose enough to be fun, but not too loose to be stupid. Don't miss them if you can. LouieB

I guess there are two usages, but I don't know for sure. There is the slight pitch correction and then there is the distortion effect. I saw Robert Glasper and his group at Chicago Jazz Fest a couple weeks ago and one of his band members used it constantly for effect. After awhile I simply couldn't take it any more. There was nothing I could do about it of course, but it just pissed me off. LouieB

Nah he will be okay. He's just some poor innocent guy who happened to be getting his head bashed in by a crazed teenager and had to shoot him. Won't happen again. LouieB

That is harsh, but I kind of see their point. I like the new album, but don't love it. Fox Confessor was stunning, this one is merely really good. LouieB

Sure it is. But isn't that basically what we do here? Speculate on shit? What he says. George Zimmerman didn't just have ONE incident, he had one major very famous incident. Everyone one is entitled to make a mistake, or a bad day, but killing someone is a really bad day and a really big mistake, although I would guess HIxter wouldn't characterize that as a mistake (I will let him speak for himself), but most of the rest of us would. Sure OJ also had a bad day or two getting arrested and prosecuted for a double murder he didn't commit, but somehow he didn't just go about his life in o

This is a guy who is going to do something stupid with a gun again in the near or maybe slightly distant future. Hopefully he won't kill anyone again, but that is hardly guaranteed. LouieB

A Chicago show would be nice. Always enjoy the solo shows. None scheduled so far. LouieB

She gave a very good performance at the Hideout Block Party. She will be on the road for two years behind this album. LouieB

Ragtime is a very good song. LouieB

Me too. Should be fun. Will Jeff Tweedy show up for Mavis? Probably not this week with what has been going on with his family. Saw Robbie Fulks at Laurie's for free last night. LouieB

Y'all got that right. LouieB

Good fucking question. Invisible Republic is a good book (and a better name than Weird Old America.). I have the 5 disk bootleg of the Basement Tapes. Again, someday Columbia will find/clean-up all the existing material, issue it for real and get us all to buy it. They can fuck around with Self-Portrait all they want. I like New Morning, but Self Portrait was something of a joke back in the day. It is only being taken seriously now because we take it all seriously. LouieB

You gotta figure that even after all these years the full and complete (whatever that means) Basement Tapes will get this box set treatment. Bob is getting up there and Columbia will mine every last note he ever did either now or after he passes. They are doing the same thing with Miles Davis. There are only so many copies of Highway 61 Revisited or even Kind of Blue they can sell every year. Even with new music fans coming up, that only pays a small percentage of the bills. The bits and pieces of the basement tapes are still a hot commodity. LouieB

Very sad news. My condolences to the family as well. LouieB

No one should be surprised at this point about whatever HIxter says. Teaching is hard hard work. It is thankless and universally criticized. Teachers work more than 12 months a year if you figure all the overtime they put in on their own. Teachers are easy to beat up on, particularly if they engage in collective bargaining. After all most teachers are women. Too bad they don't know their place anymore. They should just be happy to have any job. LouieB

I am also part of a family that has a public school teacher as part of it; if you don't know a teacher (just like if you don't know a gay person) it is easy to deny them rights and demonize them. It is ridiculous. Teaching is one of the hardest and least remunerated job on earth. People who dump on teachers are scum bags. LouieB

That is very very sad news. You have my condolences. Thanks for sharing this. LouieB

As for a Republican president - take your best shot in 2016. Time will tell. LouieB

Exactly. (I wonder how Hixter feels as an ex-military about this? More like John McCain or more like the isolationist libertarian Rand Paul?) How about the gutting of the voting rights act, or gay marriage, or the imminent death of immigration reform. I think I am even missing those days when the Fed was the root of all evil. LouieB

Yea, sure as long as someone has shot someone it is about race, race relations and politics. If there are no guns involved the discussion goes nowhere. LouieB

It's amazing. Any attempt to talk about stuff other than guns in this thread is always a failure. This should be the guns and more guns thread, not the political thread. LouieB

Linda Rondstadt has Parkinson's, can no longer sing
LouieB replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Every time they come up, the haters seem to come out of the woodwork. I am a supporter if not a huge fan. I will leave it to someone else rip on them. I own all their albums, but of course they all showed up used in junk shops over the years including a live album that ain't so great. I think a lot of the backlash has to do with their success and their high ticket prices over the years. LouieB
