The fact is that the economy continues to suck because neither the government, nor the private sector is hiring people. While the debt may be up, it is primarily because of two unfunded wars started by Bush and then put on the books by Obama. But actual government spending is way way down. Were there more government employees, both federal, state and local, buoyed by government spending, things might be better. Generally giving money directly to homeless people is a bad idea. I stopped doing it when a good friend who worked with the homeless suggested most spare change goes directly to drugs or alcohol. I do occasionally give individuals spare change when I feel I need a karma update or the person looks fairly together, or maybe totally out of it. It's hard not to sometimes, but as a general rule it is probably not a good idea. LouieB

While it is always dicey to suggest best of collections, the Columbia two disk "The Essential" is actually a great comp of his best work, both early and late. I would pop for a used copy of that and then get the first three albums. LouieB

The Laurie Anderson piece is really remarkable and maybe the most reposted article on Lou that is going around. I always found it quite remarkable that they ended up together. LouieB
