Not really important I guess. I am reflecting on my own personal experience. I know folks who do AA because of serious problems who seem to be able to live with school in their homes because their spouses did not stop drinking. I have also known people who had serious problems with alcohol that now can go into bars or restaurants and not drink. Since really I don't know that many ex heroin addicts I don't know if they can live in a place with heroin lying around, but I would think it would be fairly difficult. NO biggie either way. LouieB

I basically agree with this. But alcoholic beverages are fairly common in people's houses, particularly if you live with someone who is not on the wagon and you are. I have known plenty of folks who live with someone who is not drinking, but the other person is. Also some alcoholics can stop by a bar or restaurant where alcohol is being served and still not succumb. Clearly it would be inadvisable for someone in recovery to be hording alcohol if they lived alone. Being around any heroin or heroin users if you are in recovery would be dicey in any event. LouieB

IT would make no sense for a person in recovery at whatever stage to be hording drugs like that. Some alcoholics are able to be around alcoholic beverages if someone else in the house is drinking them, but drugs seem to be a different matter. Alcohol is not illegal, but heroin is. But then again what do I know really. I don't know hardly any ex-junkys, but I know plenty of alcoholics, they are more common in my life. LouieB

I would think people would know this by now. Heroin and its effects should be well known and that over time you need more to achieve the same effect. I have a friend whose son is still trying to get over the effects by being on methodone and it is taking years to even stop using that. Heroin is dirt cheap and readily available. It's a very sad and upsetting thing, but not the same as drinking a few beers or smoking a few joints. LouieB

Shame or not, it is really about image. Rock stars (particularly of the 60s and 70s and now in their 60s and 70s) needed the hair as part of the act. Why can't Jeff Beck afford permanent hair dye though? That's just plain weird. LouieB

I know which bottle. But guys like McCartney and Mick Jagger are sporting full brown heads of hair. I don't buy that at all. These are 70 year old guys. I have some hair on top, but it is thin with plenty of male pattern baldness. Few men get to 70 with the same hair they had at 25. LouieB

All the old guys from the 60s are hitting the bottle, or more likely the wig stores. LouieB

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.

M Henry is up by me as is M Henrietta, both in Edgewater. Only been to M Henry, but it is very good. Ann Sathers has branches in both Andersonville and further east in Edgewater too. Lots of competition. So where did the folks from the line end up?? LouieB -
Mavis will be 75 in July. So I would guess this is her 75th birthday. I suppose that could be construed as 75 years in music. LouieB

I found that interesting too. I am of the opinion everyone does ads for money, not for philosophy. LouieB

Probably. Those shows were in the 80s so I don't honestly remember. The Carnegie Hall show that kicked off that series of tours is one of the best albums either of them ever did. I de-grooved it I played it so much. LouieB

Oh yea, you go to Clarkes. They make good food. I would give Ann Sathers a shot for breakfast or lunch or dinner which is on the same side of the street as the City Suites. The Italian restaurant is Leona's which is all right. I think their service is slow, but I haven't been in a lot of years. Sheffields is a nice bar up the street from there. And Native Foods on Belmont serves pretty good veggie fare. Matsuya Japanese restaurant is up around the corner on Clark and has been there forever and is very good. Needless to say Schubas is down about three or four blocks west and is a great bar, -
I was just listening to Bud Powell last night, strangely enough. There is really no doubt that throwing jazz musicians in with rock/soul/ etc is just not fair. How can you compare those guys or Bill Evans and Thelonius Monk to anyone else. I think we have to put some parameters on this discussion but it isn't my thread. I mean Booker T is a very fine keyboard player, but you can't put him up against jazz guys. Very few rock musicians can compete with them, nor would you want them to, it would ruin a lot of good old fashioned rock and soul. LouieB

Since no one else is chiming in- When I posted up on Facebook this morning I got a reply from an old friend who said Pete had stayed with his family back in the 60s and had ended up teaching my friend how to play claw hammer banjo. Imagine that? Not only was Pete sleeping on the floor because he was on tour with others and needed a place to stay, but he taught a teenager how to play the banjo. Not too many musicians would do that. LouieB

Sad, but inevitable news. Heard about this on Facebook in the middle of the night. RIP Pete. Saw him several times, by himself and with Arlo. LouieB

A good film of this period would be very cool, considering there are two mediocre ones out - Renaldo and Clara and Hard Rain, which I guess is slightly different. LouieB

Tweedy Nominated for Producer of the Year Grammy

So okay, as a show it is pretty good. I agree about Taylor Swift who is growing up before our eyes. The boogieing Daft Punk was fine as were the old country singers. Pink was stupid. Carole King segment was good. Just like with the Oscars, you go in with low expectations and get to be pleased when the show doesn't totally suck. I just wish they gave more attention to actual music and less flash, but that is just me. louieB -

It was . For a couple vets, Rodney and Emmylou did a pretty good job. It was not either of their finest work however, but then again Mavis is not at the top of her career anymore, so it is pretty much a wash for these old timers. I watched much of the show. It was pretty much crap all the way through. I missed the first 45 minutes because I forgot it was on. There was no way Jeff was going to win, but it was sure cool he was included. Clearly this was Pharrell Williams year. And hey...how come no one told me I missed the Sarah Guthrie CD? It came out months ago and I completely missed it. -
I got this a few weeks back myself. Some of it is interesting and some of it is less interesting. The New Morning alternate versions are the best part of the album. The outtakes and alternates from BOTT are some of the best Dylan ever so it ranks slightly higher with me as something I would like and something I think needs to be out there. LouieB

Constellation will be the perfect venue for On Fillmore. Glenn has played there before and the acoustics are amazing. LouieB

I saw a BRox show with Marshall when they first started this collaboration. He must really like playing with them because he is still doing it several years on. LoieB

I guess folks don't come here anymore. Maybe with the Vic shows coming up people will chime in here with stuff they have done or with questions about Chicago. For anyone coming from out of town now - bring lots of warm clothes and build in lots of extra time getting around. We are having a monumentally bad winter. LouieB
