Bumping this....come on...someone in Chicago has to be interested in this. Everyone talks about vinyl records. You have the chance to see both me and BBop on the same day in the same place at two different booths. LouieB

Old and in the way. LouieB

The character has to go. He can't do a satire on an hour national network show like that. I think he will be fine interviewer, maybe even better than Letterman who sometimes gets lazy. I have to admit I don't watch Letterman at all anymore. I think it was time for him to go awhile back. LouieB

I will miss the character, although I must admit he breaks character more now than he used to. He is a funny guy so it should work well. Very sharp, LouieB

The Jayhawks (including Louris, Olson, and related)
LouieB replied to Analogman's topic in Someone Else's Song
Rainy Day Music is a great album. I am not so much a fan of the other two. At some point these guys are going to have to come to terms with the fact that fans want to see the Jayhawks, not so much Louris or particularly Olsen solo (he can barely fill a small room.) Maybe Olsen makes enough off royalties but it seems to me he should be happy to part of a band doing both eras of material. LouieB -
Did anyone else think it was weird that Gene Simmons appeared in full KISS regalia? Seemed over the top to me. I do think the Animals would be an interesting topic for a documentary. LouieB

Wow, that is a lot. I guess Ed really dug them. That was also interesting about Freddie. LouieB

They sure sold a lot of albums. They used to be pretty common in resale and used record stores, but with more people interested in owning LPs you see them a lot less. I am not sure who listens to them now though. LouieB

Sure why not? It ain't Sondheim, but I guess it is close enough. LouieB

The Jayhawks (including Louris, Olson, and related)
LouieB replied to Analogman's topic in Someone Else's Song
I have always thought that the reformed Jayhawks should have made room for the non-Olsen material. That way everyone could have been happy and the fans could have gotten a bit of both periods. LouieB -
I am kind of surprised this has not been discussed here. I watched it off and on last night and found it unconvincing. The DC% did have a string of some catchy tunes and certainly were bigger than the Beatles for maybe a year (or maybe less), but no matter how many aging baby boomers, including Paul McCartney they trotted out I just don't buy their importance. When the big buys hit the screen (Beatles, Stones, The Who, the Kinks) the contrast was stark. Not to mention all the Motown artists (even the dreaded Supremes), were far greater talents and musically important. I suppose giving these

A Thread for Musical Blasphemy you Truly Believe

Yes I think so. It is a sad reminder of great potential being squashed by mental illness. LouieB -

Agreed. Piper is something else though, but maybe not a masterpiece. LouieB -
This one I should be able to make. I am out of town for both Nels and Glenn's other shows. The Lightbox Orchestra I have seen a couple times before. It is a very experimental group where Fred (whom Glenn played in his trio in his pre-Wilco days) directs the group with a series of commands which he holds up on cards as I recall. it is all pretty much free improve with very little other structure. It is not for those who want structure or even a modicum of melody; it is pure avant noise most of the time. But certainly any show at the Hideout is a good time. Hope to see folks there. Hope to

CHIRP radio does a yearly record sale and it is coming up quickly. Specifics can be found at http://recordfair.chirpradio.org/details (Why can't I do a link anymore??) This is a large record sale with all kinds of cool stuff for sale. I will be working with one of the vendors, so come see me if you stop by. I know it is the week before Record Store Day, but if you like used records rather than new expensive ones, this is a great place to shop. Hope you stop by. Look for me at Carter's Thang. LouieB

Maybe #2. I dunno. LouieB -
You should be able to find most of the Pernicc Brothers CDs really cheap these days. LouieB

I suppose Def Leppard has stood the test of time, but really I don't know. A band like this is purely entertainment I think. They don't appear to be attempting anything other than that. I can't say they are writing beyond their years; it seems like they are writing to their years. They seem to have no pretention of being anything other than what they are, so that's fine. If we are discussing phenoms, I think some manage to hold on to their credibility over time, but really very few do. A band that comes out of nowhere and rises to the top can just as easily fall right back into being nowher

These sound really good. Will look into them and probably pull the trigger on em. LouieB

Not being at all acquainted with them or their music I watched a handful of their vids last night. My reaction was two fold - These kids can play (as usual verifying my opinion that musicians have never been better), but their songs reflect their youth. I suppose that is a fine thing for a bunch of teens playing rock and roll, but being an old fart they barely speak to me and aren't supposed to I guess. Second their tunes and vids are all one note, everyone interchangeable with the next. These guys need to change it up a bit for the long haul I think. The pouty quick cut vids become totally ir

OMG I must be so uncool. I have no idea what QFT means. Just for the record (not that it matters) I have no idea if they are hot looking since I have never seen their pics; I just know everyone is talking about them and were disappointed when their Chicago show was canceled for some reason. LouieB

The complete Fillmore shows is intriguing. I have only bought Vol 1, which was very good, but all Miles has something to recommend it. How was the Zappa material released? Is it for download only or CD? Definitely fusion, but what the hell. LouieB

I rarely have books to recommend, but the book "Redeployment", which is a series of short stories based on the experiences of vets in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is excellent and very compelling. I thought it was non-fiction at first. LouieB

But they are hot. And need a new name. This one is way to close to the old Christian rock group Stryper. (I think that was it.) LouieB

Yea I don't watch Boardwalk Empire enough to know. I would imagine they use remakes because of the fidelity issues as you point out. Someone once did a study of the early recordings and discovered that the bands slowed down or speeded up during recording to a significant degree. Musicians are so much better now, but these guys were mostly untrained musicians, which makes what they did pretty amazing. Looks like we have lost everyone....Talking about 1920s and 1930s jazz is totally unhip. LouieB
