That song really stands out on this album. A great ethereal quality and some beautiful vocals. I'm a sucker for piano, too, so that helps this song. That and "Giving Up the Gun" sound wonderful to my ears.

Agreed. I love all three.

I think I fell in love with Har Mar when he said to the snotty teenage girl standing with her back to the stage in the front row while he was playing, "Turn the fuck around or leave. I'm working up here. I don't go to your job and slap the dick out of your mouth." It was kind of mean-spirited, not altogether original, but still funny as hell. Then he walked over to and on top of the bar where he did shots. It may sound awful reading this, but it was really entertaining seeing it unfold in person. I had no idea what he was going to do next. It was wonderful.

I saw him open for Ben Lee several years back. He was incredible. His opening set really made it one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Totally awesome cover. I'll check the music out later!

You could probably make one pretty good album out of songs taken from everything since The Green Album, but I don't think you could make more than one. I'll say this for the latest album. It sounds like they might have chosen the ten best tracks for the record after hearing the god awful bonus tracks. On the Red Album, I felt like some of the best songs were left to be bonus tracks (Miss Sweeney, King, Pig), while they left duds on the album. This time around there are still some cringe-worthy tracks on the regular tracklist, but it gets even worse after track 10.

Definitely this.

Is this song as good as I think it is??

It is. But "Murder in the City" is even better! -
What songs does iTunes have samples up for? I was only able to find the first two singles (I assume "I'm Your Daddy" is a single).

Just downloaded "I'm Your Daddy" from iTunes and I actually dig it. It has an MGMT "Kids" feel at the end and is catchy as hell. It's not deep, the lyrics aren't heartfelt, but I can get with the fun feeling of the song. I have high hopes again for this album. It won't be the Blue Album or Pinkerton, but I don't think it will be The Red Album or Make Believe either. I'm just gonna go with the flow.

I finally saw them live a couple of months ago and they blew me away. I was really disappointed that I missed the DBT/THS tour (although I wasn't that big of a Hold Steady fan at that point), and now I can only imagine how incredible that tour was. Two great bands--especially live. I think the Hold Steady show we saw was one of the best I have ever been to and I enjoyed Craig's shtick. It was like watching Pee Wee Herman front a kick ass rock band.

Not to get too far off topic, but this song slays me every time. I have daughters and I am a son, but it still gets to me. "Gracie," the song Ben Folds wrote for his daughter, just doesn't have the same impact, even though I have two of my own.

"Kick Drum Heart" sounds like it could be a Bishop Allen song. I mean that in a good way. I just got the album today from Amazon and I really like it. It's the first Avett Brothers album I've purchased and will definitely be going out to get the others. I've always thought "Die, Die, Die" was a great song! Now it's time to take the plunge and get the albums.

I've always been partial to their double live album "Live Across a Wire" which came out between "Recovering the Satellites" and "This Desert Life". I'm particularly fond of the first disc in that set which is of their MTV (or was it VH1?) Unplugged performance. (The second disc is an MTV Live at the 10 Spot performance.) As far as studio albums go, I've got them all but I think "Recovering the Satellites" is their best, followed closely by "August and Everything After." I've liked all their following studio albums in varying degrees, and I've never disliked an album. I remember really likin

I saw them several months ago and they were mostly meh. Maybe it was the fact I had to work the next day. I don't know, they just weren't that amazing. But then I saw The Hold Steady shortly thereafter...and that was an entirely different story.

Love, love, love this album. Especially the covers of "Rebels" and "Mama Bake A Pie (Daddy Kill a Chicken)". I have a live version of "TVA" that I think Jason played a little faster, which I prefer, but probably only because that's the version I've listened to most. This album goes to show what an amazingly prolific group they were in the DD/TDS days. Back to the rock...

Probably for the same reasons people wanted Episode 1 to be as good as Episodes 4-6 and why people want the Simpsons now to be as great as they were seasons ago. People either don't remember what the originals actually were like or maybe they've built them up to be so great anything else is disappointing, even when it's not that bad. I don't think that's the case with Weezer as those first two albums were great and the others just weren't. I think people like to know what to expect out of a band, and when you expect the greatness of TBA and Pinkerton then everything else feels like a let down.

Oh dear god. This might be indefensible... Weezer's 7th album called Raditude
-
I will start by saying I am admittedly a Weezer apologist. A lot of the newer (post Maladroit) Weezer has been different but usually not in the best ways. It didn't sound like classic Weezer but it also didn't sound like anything particularly good. I think they have shown flashes of greatness on the last couple of albums, but a lot of it has been mediocre. Hmm...reading this back maybe I'm not a Weezer apologist. Anyway... Weezer has a new single out (apparently available on iTunes). You can run over to Weezer Dot Com to hear it streaming on the main page. It sounds different than other

You can hear the whole track over at AOL's Spinner (and credited to Wilco w/ Andrew Bird)... Funny People Soundtrack

I love Jude. I saw him open for Ben Folds Five back in the day but I haven't seen him since then. He doesn't seem to tour much in the States, probably for the reason you just mentioned!

I just got Sink or Swim in the mail yesterday. I haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet, but I like what I heard. How are they live? We're going to see them at the 930 Club later this year.

Right on. Beautifully put. I hope he will be remembered for the totality of the things he did in his life, including the amazing music he produced back in the day. We shouldn't gloss over the aspects, but we also shouldn't ignore how amazing he was as an entertainer. I still love the "Smooth Criminal" video. How did he lean like that and not fall over?!

My wife and I are going to see them tomorrow night so I guess I'll have to dig out Wincing the Night Away and give it a listen. I'm not sure I could name one song off that album, but I imagine they'll sound familiar when they play them.
