UPS still has my physical copy in Ohio, but hopefully it will be here in my physical hands in Virginia tomorrow! Luckily I can still listen to the stream. I liked it initially and it continues to grow on me. I second (or third or fourth...) the comments about the Shonna songs. "(It's Gonna Be) I Told You So" is particularly awesome. If she can bang out two songs of this quality for future albums we're all in luck. Of the Patterson and Cooley stuff, the stand out songs for me so far are "Birthday Boy," and "The Fourth Night of My Drinking." I've always liked "After the Scene Dies" and it sounds

That feels like the perfect cover for a Hold Steady album, built on their whole mythos of band-audience communion. I dig it, too.

Agreed. I'm not sure I'll go out and pick up a copy, but I am enjoying listening to the stream at Spinner.

You can stream the new album at Spinner here: http://www.spinner.com/new-releases#/4 So I'm listening to "Good Morning" as it is listed here and it isn't the same song that was on that Stereogum link or what I had heard on iTunes. I guess it is actually playing "Solitary Gun" when you click on "Good Morning." I haven't listened to the rest, but I have listened to the first two songs, whatever they actually are, and it is all very encouraging. Record hits tomorrow. It may be best to ask for the rest of the week, too, so you'll have plenty of time to sit back and enjoy these records.

I thought they sounded pretty good for past-their-prime Who, and as good as Baba O'Riley sounded, it didn't do nearly the justice it could have to how awesome that song is live. Seeing them play that live is one of the best live music experiences I've ever had. Zak's cymbals did kick ass though. Oh, and I agree that Prince kicked all kinds of ass during his halftime show. I'd love to see a younger act get a chance to play the halftime show, but I realize that isn't very likely.

I'm sorry to hear your experiences at the 9:30 Club sucked. I've probably been there 30 or 40 times and have had a good experience almost every time, although there are some shows that attract a certain type of douche-baggy crowd. My father-in-law really wants to go to the Charlottesville shows and my mother-in-law graciously offered to watch my daughters if we wanted to go. I have awesome in-laws!

I'm generally a Weezer apologist but I have to agree here. There are a couple of other songs on the album that are passable, but overall the album is VERY disappointing.

Those were great shows. I was at the Cooley and Isbell shows, but missed Patterson at the Black Cat (great little venue). Surely they'll show DC some love before it's 2011!

A friend of mine just introduced me to them and I've been listening/watching their stuff on YouTube. I'm looking forward to picking up their album. I get the comparison to Fleet Foxes and I also hear a little Avett Brothers in there. Next time they're near DC (which I realize might be awhile), I'll have to check them out.

I completely agree. I don't think it's an unfair comparison either. If you have to be compared to someone, you could do worse than Paul Simon. The soft, easy going quality of their voices is very pleasant...in a good way.

I frankly wouldn't have known who she was if it weren't for those two. I'm a fan of all the younger Wainwrights these days, including their half-sister Lucy.

The Killers. I got into them a little over a year ago. Sam's Town is a great rock record. I'm kind of surprised what a negative critical reaction that one got when it was released.

It sure is, um, different. It's definitely not what I would have expected from them after the last album (which I like more every time I listen to it), but I generally don't have problems with bands changing their sound from record to record (although I'd love to get one more "classic" sounding Weezer record).

GREAT album.

I think maybe it's just the soft, effortless and easy delivery. I think about "Crazy Love, Vol. II" from "Graceland" and to me that sounds like a delivery that is similar to what the guy in VW is doing. And maybe I'm delusional!

I agree it is an unfair criticism, but I think part of the comparison also comes from the lead singer's voice. He just sounds a lot like Paul Simon to me, especially Graceland Paul Simon. If I were Vampire Weekend I would just be happy people keep comparing me to a classic album like Graceland.
