There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to people's reactions to this album. After a couple of listens I don't find it particularly incredible or offensive. I think I'm just more amazed that I'm listening to "Chinese Democracy" after all these years.
  3. Video of the whole show in now available. I've only watched through "Magic" and so far it is pretty great. It would have been awesome to be there. Embedded video at Paste
  4. Honorable mentions: The Hold Steady - Stay Positive DBT - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
  5. I guess it would be in poor taste to name names. We'll just have to wait for the dance off!
  6. But do you know who wrote the song about him?
  7. I really like this album so far and think it is a significant improvement over Songs for Silverman. Even the songs that sound like they could have been on that album (Cologne and Kylie from Connecticut) sound better because there's more variety here. Maybe Silverman had the same variety of sound, but my impression of it having not listened to it in awhile is that it was a flat record. I think the caliber of songs on this one is better and I genuinely like most of them so far. The only song I can't get into is Free Coffee. Other than that I think it's a solid record. Does anyone know the stor
  8. Has anyone heard the new Hotel Lights album yet? I really liked the first record and had no idea Darren Jesse (he of Ben Folds Five) was still recording as HL. The new album came out last week. There are several songs up at their Myspace page. The new album includes "Amelia Bright," a song that I think was going to be on the next BFF album if the band had stayed together. I'm glad Darren got to keep the song for himself. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the new album when it shows up in the mail this week.
  9. Me too! DBT has been one of my favorite bands for years now and I just recently started to get in to The Hold Steady. Boys and Girls in America and Stay Positive have been in extremely heavy rotation in my car and at work recently. Maybe they'll add more dates later and the DC area will get a show.
  10. No 930 Club date. We may have to travel for this one. I'm going to need a babysitter.
  11. Nada Surf - Lucky Mates of State - Re-Arrange Us Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs Drive-By Truckers - BTCD Fleet Foxes - s/t Whenever I see these lists I realize just how little new music I buy. I buy lots of music, but at least half of it is usually older stuff. I've been listening a lot recently to The New Pornographers' Challengers, Nada Surf's Let Go, and Ryan Adams' Gold. Fewer new releases get spins on my CD player.
  12. Attempt numero dos: Buried - Good Health Have Vanished Meh. Not anywhere near as cool as lot of these have been so far.
  13. Mortimer Wheeler - Not fearful of Happiness
  14. 1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 2. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 3. The Beatles - Revolver 4. Weezer - Weezer (The Blue Album) 5. Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day 6. Ryan Adams - Gold 7. Nirvana - Nevermind 8. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 9. Weezer - Pinkerton 10. Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism 11. Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera 12. They Might Be Giants - Flood 13. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) 14. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood 15. Rufus Wainwright - Want One/Want Two 16. Wilco - Summerteeth 17. Pearl Jam - Ten 18. Th
  15. I don't own a single Bob Dylan album. Some people also must have thought their was an information cut off date of the late 70s. Big ups to gogo for an awesome job with this!
  16. After only one listen I actually like the Hiroshima song, but I can definitely understand people's criticisms. I found Songs for Silverman kind of boring and at least Hiroshima isn't boring. Maybe he's broken out of his malaise.
  17. I've only seen him once and that was as an opener for Guster (after he blew up at a/some fan(s) at a Nashville show) at Wolf Trap, which is a smaller shed. So I don't know if those are the best circumstances, especially since he left the tour early shortly after that, but I wasn't blown away by him live. Of course he didn't have a lot working in his favor for that type of show. I still love that first album though. I think seeing him as a headliner would probably make for a better show. He does kind of stay detached and doesn't have a whole lot to say in between songs, but he does sound great
  18. I was listening to this at work this afternoon. "Bob" came on and made me smile.
  19. I think you'd like Sir Stewart's Top 20 albums of all time.
  20. I love it when the Drive-By Truckers close with this.
  21. I never would have pegged this guy from this band for being into cocaine, but there you have it. I guess maybe he isn't into cocaine, but he's been arrested for possessing it. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h0JdciA...MJ4qrQD91USK000
  22. I'll put a vote in for Graceland. I also like Hearts and Bones, particularly the track "Renee and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War."
  23. My wife and I were at the solo Ben Folds show at the 930 Club when he was recording Ben Folds Live. I think at least one or two songs from that show made the CD. Those solo shows were a lot fun and very interactive. Since then it's been great to see him with a band again, although I wish he would play places like the 930 Club. We've seen him most recently at Wolf Trap (an outdoor shed, but a good one) and in Baltimore with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Wolf Trap shows are good, but the club shows are better. Of course, it was at one of his Wolf Trap shows that we stuck around to see Ru
