  1. The Girl From Ipanema - Getz & Gilberto Walk On By - Dionne Warwick Early Years - Laura Cantrell Lullaby of Birdland - Sarah Vaughan Whole Wide World - Jenifer Jackson
  2. Some stuff I like that I think could get the alt.country stamp (if I ever cared about that), starting from the 90's: Freakwater, Amy Allison, Neko Case, Steve Earle, Mary Gauthier, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Mark Olson/The Creekdippers, Steve Young, Haley Bonar, Tammy Faye Starlite & the Angels of Mercy, Jay Munly... PS: Steve Young started way before the 90's, but he's original enough to be called "alternative"
  3. Hollywood Town Hall bores me. Some tunes of Tomorrow The Green Grass are fine. But essentially, they're a kind of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young revival. Nothing new under the sun. On the other hand, I really love Mark Olson's solo stuff, especially the latest few albums. Nothing new either, but emotionally, it does something to me.
  4. As for me, I find No Depression totally boring. Not a fan of Uncle Tupelo at all, save a few tunes from Mr Tweedy ("Black Eye" and stuff like that).
  5. There are punk elements in Uncle Tupelo and Slim Cessna's Auto Club, among others.
  6. I think it can, but it just depends how you use it in your personal view. There's free fancy about labels. In my humble opinion, Townes Van Zandt isn't more alt. country than alt. blues or alt. folk. I think he was also an alt. guitarist, an alt. lyricist and an alt. human being. And here's an alt. banana:
  7. Was captivated by her voice with the first album, The Captain. Was progressively disappointed with the three following albums, but enjoyed the samples of her new one with Shane Nicholson (her husband musician), the vocal harmonies are excellent. It sounds really roots, in Appalachian style. So I purchased it.
  8. Wikipedia got it right in my opinion: Alternative country is a term used to describe a number of country music subgenres that tend to differ from mainstream or pop country music. The term is sometimes known as Alt. country and has included country music bands that have incorporated influences ranging from american roots music, bluegrass, rock & roll, rockabilly, americana, honky-tonk and punk rock. History "Alternative country" can refer to several ideas. Most generally, any musician who plays a type of country music different from the prevailing trend can be said to play "alternativ
  9. Right now, the French is wondering why "underlooked" and "overlooked" mean more or less the same thing.
  10. Well, I can't buy all the albums of 2008 recommended here... How about some enlightments with words? Nevermind, I'll read some reviews elsewhere...
  11. What's the big deal with Fleet Foxes? Performant vocal harmonies and decent melodies, but what else? (I've only listened to them on YouTube)
  12. Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
  13. Obviously, he's not a doctoral student in music history.
  14. I had purchased their first album cause the female singer was quite beautiful on the cover (yes, I do that sometime). But I don't like their music. No point with Lucinda Williams in my opinion.
  15. In my opinion, if he thinks it's good on the first spin, he'll think it's great in a few days. That's how it happened for me.
  16. My favorite live stuff is simply the one of my fave artsist and bands. I don't care much when a performance is terrific if the artist or band doesn't do much to me. Sometime I can get thrills just seeing my fave artist coming on stage. There's a matter of fascination going on. A good show is a good show, for sure, it can take you if you're well in, but nothing's better than being surprised, amazed, charmed, etc... Sometime you can just focuse on some details and be taken by them. I know I'm unconsciously captivated by images, too. There's instantly something between the sound and the image tha
  17. I say that on all the early Beatles songs (from 63 to 65) his drums sound like a saucepan, and that's not a big point.
  18. I think Neutral Milk Hotel is worth it. I've listened to the second album, and it's arguably one of the best indie records of the 90's.
  19. The more it's popular, the more it has chances to be influential for any wannabe musician, don't you think? The fact it's been proportionally more influential than the musics of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, James Brown, Motown artists, Beach Boys, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan or many others would need be proved, and I think it's impossible. And is "influential" music necessarily great? And is Ringo for something in the fact the Beatles music has been influential? I'm far from being sure of that.
  20. "some of the greatest music ever made" isn't a strong argument either. "some of the most popular and widely appreciated music by people and critics" would be more objective.
  21. I could say the opposite. I mean: why most of his drumming simply sounds like a saucepan?
