All the singles, with B-sides and previously unreleased stuff, have been reissued as bonus tracks of the original albums. A compilation is only useful for a cheap summary to start, but if you're a fan, you can buy only the original albums reissued on CD (Sanctuary 2004), since each of them features all its satellite singles.

"I didn't like that sleeve. I wanted the cover to be black and strong like the sound of the LP, instead all of those fancy colours. I was starting to let things go and accepting things that I shouldn't have." (Ray Davies) "The album, on the other hand, is perfect." (Me)

I would edit Analogman's recommendations to: 1. Kinks

This applies to this line of yours essentially.

and now he's trying to convince me... my own experience: they *always* look better in life than pictures - and better on movies than pictures, too.

Sharon Jones more sexy? Why not... Amy's long and thin body, the way she moves her legs on stage, her slow sense of beat, and of being derivative and lost in the music: all that makes her sex appeal, which is more tasty and suggestive than your average porno girls, blondes with big boobs or whatever. And how could anyone deny the captivating landscapes of her eyes? She has a beautiful face. Not pretty: beautiful.
-
Questionning the sanity of consensus is probably too much asking, yeah. When many people share the same favorites, I'm not sure it's a matter of taste anymore. The more you have taste, the more you get personal.
-
The results of such Poll would only underline the mainstream notion of sex appeal. Exactly as the Top albums of the year on this board underline a mainstream notion of "good indie music". Really? Now that's a bad sign. I already preferred Lucinda Williams as a "brune" (in French we say "une brune").
-
No. The average blonde is everyone's idea of sex appeal. You see that everywhere in the media, and the society. So it wasn't stupid to ask. As early as your sex appeal is "something else", half the people won't get it.
-
Wrong about what? I just asked you a question.
-
Good joke, but she doesn't look like a man at all. A girl must be your average blonde baby doll, to you?
-
Her sex appeal isn't even questionable to me.

In my opinion Sharon Jones is above Amy Winehouse, but actually they make rather different music. Sharon does pure funk most of the time, whereas Amy is more of a stylist. Now Amy is obviously more sexy - while Sharon is a superior show-woman, with more energy and charisma.

That Shelby Lynne album is on my list of next purchases, along with the Sam Phillips one

But Lou Reed didn't hesitate to re-record his VU classics in his solo albums... By the way: I think Songs for Drella is an excellent Reed & Cale album.
-
Well, but Cale didn't write "Walk on the Wild Side", "Make Up", "Satellite of Love", "Perfect Day", "Berlin", "Caroline Says", "Street Hassle", etc... I like John Cale, but I think Lou is a better singer, and his rock'n'roll sensibility is less arty. Of course, the legend of Lou Reed was essentially written with the VU material to me. John Cale doesn't have stuff like "Sweet jane", "What Goes On" or "Waiting for my Man" in his catalog.
-
Lou Reed by billions of miles. John Cale doesn't even touch him. Now people, if this post of mine is a mirror of your own arguments, I win the first point.

"Sandy Denny" is one of the most beautiful songs of 2007. Mark Olson is great.

Side 1 (Love's) Ring of Fire All My Trials Sour Grapes Fair & Tender Ladies My Love Side 2 Voice of the Bayous Fly Pretty Swallow Johnny, I Hardly Knew You Satan's Child As the Sparrow Goes Yes, Anita recorded an album of folk songs around 1963, and it was stunning, the best album of her relatively brief singing career (she was certainly the best singer of the three sisters). This album is a dream. It sounds almost Greek, or in the lands of Yma Sumac. Just hearing "All My Trials" makes you fall to the Sirens appeal. Who could have imagined one of the Carter daughters wou
