I second this choice big time. I'll add a few more Deep Southern Soul selections to the list: Clarence Carter - any of his early records such as "This Is Clarence Carter," "The Dynamic Clarence Carter" and "Patches." You can get The Dynamic and Patches as a 2-fer CD, and This Is was just reissued by Collectors' Choice Music. Don Covay - Mercy!/Seesaw (another fantastic 2-fer CD, not to be missed.) O.V. Wright - A Nickel and a Nail and Ace of Spades / Memphis Unlimited I better stop here before I get carried away.

James Carr is fantastic. I love that record. I'd also highly recommend getting this one:

Rockpile - Seconds of Pleasure

"I've Gotta Get A Message To You" is pure pop bliss.

That is effing sad when someone of Mavis' stature can't find anyone to put out her record. I miss the days when souls, not suits ran the record companies (well, some record companies anyhow.)
-
I bought it yesterday and played it in the car on the drive home. Mavis still sounds good, too soon for me to comment on the production though. I'll have to give this a few more spins this week and let the songs sink in a bit more.

Great music and the subject of the doc Howard Armstrong is a real funny and entertaining storyteller.

I got that one from the library a few months back. By the time I got around to starting it I'd run out of renewals and had to return it. Anyhow, I've got it back now and I'm about 30 pages in.

I dig quite a bit of the 70s output of these two great musicians, but this new one didn't grab me after first listen. I'll have to give it another go later on, sometimes you just have to be in the right mood before something takes hold. Talking about mature piano men, I quite like Dr. John's new disc, at least he's still making good music .

Great director, saw quite a few of his films over the years. I think Le Boucher is probably my favorite of his too.

Joe South - Introspect & Don't It Make You Want to Go Home? The Zombies - Zombie Heaven Bee Gees - Odessa

A Robert Crumb double bill. It's been quite a few years since I last saw Crumb. There was some nice extras on the DVD including extra footage and commentary from 2006 by director Terry Zwigoff and Roger Ebert.

I hear ya Todd. He's my go to guy when in doubt about what to listen to. I still get blown away by his musical adventurousness, melodic sensibilities, vocal prowess and humor--unfortunately very few artists have humor in their music, the ones that do are some of my favorite songwriters ever (Nilsson, Newman, Prine, Wainwright III.)

Harry Nilsson - Pandemonium Shadow Show I had "She Sang Hymns Out of Tune" Stuck in my head this morning so I had to grab this CD.
