  1. From Neutral Milk Hotel's Facebook page: * Neutral Milk Hotel * It has now been officially announced (via Wilson at Merge Records) that Jeff Mangum has contributed a track to the U.S. version of the Chris Knox tribute album Stroke. The song, “Sign the Dotted Line,” is a cover of the Tall Dwarfs track. From Merge Records: On June 11, 2009, musician Chris Knox suffered a life-altering stroke at his home in Grey Lynn, New Zealand. Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox is a celebration of Chris and his music. He was instrumental in bringing New Zealand punk and alternative music to international audi
  2. Happy birthday to the nicest guy on this board -
  3. Please do. I’m envious, as it appears as though it will be several months before I’ll get an opportunity to see it, assuming that at some point, it sees wide release. I’ve been anticipating this movie since it was announced that filming had begun, and every step of the way, Harvey Weinstein has found some way to fuck it up. Hey, maybe you could sneak one of them there cams in for us and tape it? And don't be cheap like those torrent assholes, buy a decent camcorder, don't skimp, get one of those HD bitches - oh, and don't forget the tripod - I like not feeling like I'm viewing the movie fro
  4. Andrew Sullivan: This is interesting: Rick Warren And Uganda's Looming Gay Genocide As reported in a March 29, 2008 story from the AllAfrica.com news service, in March 2008 Rick Warren attended a conference of Ugandan Anglican Bishops who were protesting the Church of England's tolerance for homosexuality. AllAfrica, reporting on his appearance, summarized Warren's quotes as homosexuality is not a natural way of life and thus not a human right, and directly quoted Warren as stating, "We shall not tolerate this aspect at all." The key involvement of Martin Ssempa in the bill, a close al
  5. Wow, I haven’t watched such a deeply affecting movie in quite awhile. I’m still processing it this morning, and can’t quite shake its existential chill – what a great, unassuming flick. Rockwell gives one of the finest, human, nuanced performances of the year, and I would be shocked (though I shouldn’t be) if is not nominated in the best actor category.
  6. Ladies and gentlemen, Andrew Sullivan has left the building, exit stage right: Leaving the Right It's an odd formulation in some ways as "the right" is not really a single entity. But in so far as it means the dominant mode of discourse among the institutions and blogs and magazines and newspapers and journals that support the GOP, Charles Johnson is absolutely right in my view to get off that wagon for the reasons has has stated. Read his testament. It is full of emotion, but also of honesty. The relationship of a writer to a party or movement is, of course, open to discussion. I under
  7. I know exactly how you feel. It starts off so promising, with one of my all time favorite beginnings “A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.” – and what follows is great, but then, as you stated, everything goes all pear shaped, and just trying to tread water becomes much too difficult. I’m in love with Pynchon’s command of language, and there’s a great book in there somewhere, but ultimately, for me, mining it really just takes too much work. I’m not afraid of difficult novels, far from it, but GR is another beast entirely. It’s

  9. Well, one detail they also left out, is that 6.6 billion Forints is the equivalent of $7.87, US – which, in Budapest, can still buy you a pretty big bag of candy. Nothing fancy like a Reese’s, but some half way decent rock candy, which, in Budapest, is literally made out of rocks.
  10. No fucking around, I think this might be the best proposal I've come across yet.
  11. Seriously, have you gays ever considered donating some of that power to help solve the coming energy crisis?
  12. If you're interested in reading more about this group, you might want to check out the following book - from Amazon: The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power Checking in on a friend's brother at Ivenwald, a Washington-based fundamentalist group living communally in Arlington, Va., religion and journalism scholar Sharlet finds a sect whose members refer to Manhattan's Ground Zero as "the ruins of secularism"; intrigued, Sharlet accepts on a whim an invitation to stay at Ivenwald. He's shocked to find himself in the stronghold of a widespread "invisible" network,
  13. No apology needed kiddo, you're one of my favorites on this board - not that I'd allow that to influence my attitude Anyhow, I think we've probably taken this about as far as it can go. For what it's worth, this article might shed some light on this group of crazies. http://www.examiner.com/x-4107-International-LGBT-Issues-Examiner~y2009m11d29-US-Congressmen-support-Uganda-AntiHomosexuality-Death-Penalty-Law-in-the-name-of-Jesus Edit - after reading this, some senators, along with the White House, are going to be receiving some pretty fucking angry letters for Christmas.
  14. I wasn’t suggesting you are blind, I just slipped it in after (or so I think) you responded to the post in which I slipped it. You were seeking clarification on why the church has taken such a hard line approach, and I went looking, and posted what I found. I could have broke it down in my own words, but when I do that, folks often accuse me of simply stating my opinion, when in fact, I’ve sort of condensed info from other sources.
  15. In case you missed it, from the Times Online: 'Even more shocking, acts of 'aggravated homosexuality' will earn the death penalty. Now it is alleged that those moral paragons who brought us prostitution for Jesus not only support the bill, but are the authors of the measure. David Bahati, the Ugandan MP who introduced the legislation, is reported to be a member of The Family, The Children of God, The Family International, The Fellowship or whatever they happen to be calling themselves this week. For our purposes, let’s just call them The Cult. According to author Jeff Sharlet, who lived amon
  16. I can admit that religion often plays a positive role in people's lives and the culture at large, but you almost seem completely incapable of admitting that, yes, sometimes horrible things are done in the name of religion. Why is that so difficult to see? You're every bit as stubborn as I am. From the Times Online: 'Even more shocking, acts of 'aggravated homosexuality' will earn the death penalty. Now it is alleged that those moral paragons who brought us prostitution for Jesus not only support the bill, but are the authors of the measure. David Bahati, the Ugandan MP who introduced the l
  17. Honestly, I don’t know - but given its problems, I cannot imagine who someone chooses to sleep with ranks high on the list of priorities that need to be addressed - but therein lies the problem with religion, it doesn’t need an excuse, words from an ancient work of fiction is reason enough.
  18. True, but this isn’t just some other issue people simply disagree upon, this is a religious organization sanctioning murder, let's say that again, murder - there are very few, if any “respectable” organizations that sanction such punishment on the grounds of sexual orientation. It is unconscionable and indefensible. If any other organization made such a claim, they would ostracized appropriately, but this is a religious organization, so criticism is kept to a minimum - we must remain respectful, I call holy fucking bullshit.
  19. So much for free will - capitulate or burn for all eternity.
  20. Religion can be practiced outside the church.
  21. You’ve never met my uncle. Neither I, nor you, necessarily know that. Some people devote their lives to the pursuit of religion, some sports, others, Parcheesi.
  22. Some golfers might feel the same way, but you can renounce your membership to a certain club, and still play golf elsewhere.
