  1. FRAP is what Neil has (stereo as i recall)...there are a few modern day versions (all expensive)...K&K is generally considered the closest and most reasonable equivalent, pure western being the model i use (awesome)...most all of these types of ickups are prone to feedback but can be controlled as mentioned I use the M1a and K&K through a stereo jack live on my martin and couldnt be happier...your results will vary j
  2. Wow that things gonna sound soo warm... congrats on a great purchase just put a baggs m1a with my K&K on my martin d-41c, youl love the pickup too j
  3. Some interesting and tasty features...but i suspect you wont get much milage out of this one...for one, with a solid state rectifier, it isnt really a class A all tube amp...speaker is small and with limited eq and no reverb, youll narrow that number of tones youll be able to utilize...a loud 5 watts, probably not, the el84 is there to break up early, not project...practice amp, yes, recording amp, maybe...gigging amp, no....surprises the shit out of me that Les Paul would allow his name on something like this... Im a SG into fender guy for the most part...if i were you id try it out against
  4. Which one---the red one ('66) i thnk? He has a blue one as i recall as well ('69)...
  5. Wagon's right...too many issues, never happen...youll have to get a custom neck and nut made (unless you have super skinny fingers), even then itll be too hard to play...stock pickups could work, but youd have to have a new saddle assembly, find some way to fit 6 more tuners and wider string trees on the tele style neck, and fill the original, then redrill 12 holes in the body under the bridgeplate and add ferrules...string tension would be the last of these worries, and while any tension rod could compensate, the issue would exist... after spending the time, effort, and considerable money
  6. Think the blues junior is the best entry level tube amp out there right now...ive owned two, they are worth it.. j
  7. Wrong pickups for a jaguar...i cant read the headstock for shit not sure ive ever seen a pickguard quite like that one... j
  8. Really a good thing to mention...i have two comments on amp effects loops first is that there isnt a consistant model for these things, which means some are simple loops that dont have any gain other that the amps post...some have a gain circuit (preamp) dedicated to the effects loop...each have their strengths...each have weaknesses---if the loop has a preamp circuit, the sound can be colored by the amp...if it doenst have a gain, or a wet/dry, then youll have a signal loss going to the post amp... Also, many amps, especially older and reissue models, either dont have this feature, or rel
  9. willing to bet theres some delay in that...most of what hear is bass/organ/drums however j
  10. People make much more out of this than need be...setting bias on a retube is extreme tweaking...the tubes and accompanying grid have built in tolerances...as long as youre within those, theres no reason to fret of biasing...in amps with no bias pot, you shouldnt have to worry about making a change, the amp design allows for discrepancys in tube tuning, and swpping out resistor makes no sense...youd need the proper tube tester and scope to rate the tubes and then set bias, but it is rare that the tube ratings are far enough out of the amps tolerances to warrant a substantial change...\ j
  11. Ok you crack me up....certainly not stupid questions First question on ceramic vs alnico....same as how ceramic compares to alnico in pickup magnets...exactly the same physics...its a taste issue and im really not sure how to classify...its a feel thing...the real issue with break up is a combo of ampage vs material, and the coil assembly prolly has much to do with it as the magnet...and the reality is that with 6 inches, theres only so much you can expect ( applies to women as well)... OK tire analogy is good...think about driving a new car with a heathy V6 with shitty worn tires...no
  12. So often overlooked...i have posted this a few times elsewhere, make sure you get into a regular maintainance routine...dirt and dust kill guitar signals through pedals...the most important thing i do in this regard its to clean the cable tips with tarnish solvent ( i use WD40 cause it evaporates) and on many of my pedals i open the box and clean the input jacks with solvent and a q-tip...this can help on amp jacks as well... j
  13. One other thing while im thinking about it...for those of us with the pleasure (or disadvantage, depending) of having 6V6 tubes, the options are significantly more limited, as the plate voltages vary in amps using 6V6s. some tubes dont perform in some amps...prime example: Fender Deluxe Reverb, >450volts at the plate, meaning that the tubes have to be rated that high to handle it, and even so, youll burn though tubes much faster than in some amps... not sure on the champ however, so its in your best interest wheeldwagon to inquire about this when purchasing your tubes... j
  14. There are plenty of options under $50 a piece for NOS, but your point is well taken...i sort of got the feeling the champ was vintage or something more than a cheap amp, and worth the investment, but either way, the retube will make a huge impact on the sound...for my 65 Deluxe Reverb ri a complete retube with NOS could be as much as $300, but thats $300 that over the course of a lucky 2 year life span is $12.50 a month, and pays itself off with tone and string response... The scam issue with NOS tubes, on ebay especially, was something i was trying to touch on without going to far in the ex
  15. Afraid im not much of a fan of those particular tubes, Tung-Sols are not made by that manufacturer anymore, new company that bought the rights to the name...Same with the mullards mentioned, except it is common for the new russian owners to spend more on the re-packaging of random, old surplus tubes and claim they are manufactured to the design specs for the mullards, clearly a scam...JJs are better in that price range... I think NOS tubes (like RCA, GE/Sylvania), would be more of a value...in most cases they will perform better and far longer, and while you could pay up to $50 for a single
  16. Speakers: Jensen for six inchers but make sure you match the amp load, right? Tubes: Go here and drool...in that amp, the right tube makes all the difference...and make sure you checkout the FAQ on that site...because of demand form amp manufacturers and corporate inbreeding from procurement of patents and tradenames, many tubes and namebrands are way different than in the even the recent past... http://www.vacuumtube.com/guitartubes.htm oops, now im prolly gonna spend some money j
  17. overdrive into dist adds harmonics, but you can barely hear---however OD to dist almost always compresses...so the reverse is a good way to go...im running a jeckyl and hyde so i dont have these issues... i put wah at the very end, but i only use it with ambient delay, so im out of norm... j
  18. Guess you still have to warm up to the sound guy... Yes, you know im really surprised they havent come out with a stereo/blend or two input version of this...maybe a mono 2 female, one male Y cable...$15 at Radio shack? j
  19. Yes, this is tha case with strats in particular, and they used basswood in a few, as well as a very limited run of mustangs if i recall correctly, and the Japan factory soon after was responsible for the fine line of re-issue series instruments...i know the teles stayed true to the original: ash of the '72 thinline, mahogany for the '69 thinline, alder and ash for the '5o's teles and the '72 customs, maybe some maple capped standards...im a big fan of the skunk strip maple necks of this period, i think the first application of the vintage 'reliced' finish... j
  20. Yea alot of folks i know use that site...the owners are pleasant and knowledgeable... j
