$50,000 may sound cheap...but for an out of court settlement to really happen, there'll have to be a 'once and for all...' type of arrangement, which wont be as cheap...they should go to court...

sure enough, that headstock says jaguar...

looks like a frankenstein to me...thats a mustang bridge, gibson style humbucker, clearly a new pickguard (i dont think fender ever made a jazzmaster with this single PU config)...the wood looks too light to be walnut, mahogany is most unlikely... im thinking alder refinished, the original finish having been stripped...wish i could see the headstock

Good observation! Id have to say that sadly dating gibsons exactly is often impossible...serials get murky before the '60's, and many models ended up getting made from what ever parts and materials they had at the time...ive owned Js, lgos and B-25 models guitars from the same era that each had different pickguards, neck blocks and bracing... Based on what ive encountered, it isnt far fetched to think that jeff's '54 might not have left the factory until '55 with the new pickguard...or the pickguard was retrofitted during the later fifties seeing as how he was not the original owner... Ill post a pic later, just got back...It was an old black USA strat maple neck with a round red WFMU sticker...sure it was vintage, although kind resembled those 'reliced' ones they hock these days The Les Paul Jeff has is a flamed tiger maple standard with bigsby, he used it on Boxfull of letters Nels has a new (i think) Jaguar, silver with silver headstock, with a charlie christian pickup at the neck...dont know if the pic came out, Jeff saw me take it and i felt silly, considering the horrible and inattentive crowd tonight I believe that Nels also is now using 2 kaoss pads, not 1

Oxford MS - 4.23.09 - The Lyric
In a little rowboat replied to Virgil Caine's topic in After The Show
Am i the first one back?? I cant believe im starting this with my bad memory and whisky shots Great, great venue (cap 1100) and while sold out, not quite full...crowd, not so much great...not great except the front few rows...big frat party really, to the point where 5 songs into it Jeff prods the crowd about talking...then some after just plan gets mad " hey! John used to live here..."...then later berates the kids for rushing to buy a ticket just to be seen and socialize, some thing like"i know your all rich and all...but in this economy...LISTEN!" But its Ole Miss so what do you want? -
help me choose some new pickups
In a little rowboat replied to jff's topic in Solid State Technology
I think a main concern is determining whether the stock pickups are the same size as gibson humbuckers (it looks like it but i can tell from pics)...from there id say look in to some duncans. I had the jazz combo in my old sg standard and they sounded remarkable (just cause they are called jazz doesnt mean the dont rock hard if needed...great tonal variances) If you are going for a Les Paul sound, TV Jones is not for you...and again youd have to worry about fit With the coil tap, you should be able to use almost any humbucker, the wiring should be the same as what you have now... do you have a go-to song or riff that you play?
In a little rowboat replied to MattZ's topic in Solid State Technology
Used to be Neil Young's 'I am a child' or 'The Loner' Straight to Drop D everytime...if it doesnt sound good in D, then i dont play it further -
i believe that was a sunrise pickup he had before...

I hope no one is offended if i copy and paste...i just commented on the same topic in a recent thread: I so far as pickups go...i have tried as many as i could find as i play almost exclusively acoustic...i use Fishman Matrix Infinity pickups in my acoustics...they are simply the best sounding and most reliable in the majority of live settings (ever one being different)...USTs can sound quacky, but are solid sounding--a good eq or soundguy can really fix that (i use an Aphex acoustic exciter to get rid of that quack)...the fishman set up offers a bass boost, volume, and eq capabilities in th

Jeff's acoustic di/preamp system?
In a little rowboat replied to Tribute2Johnny's topic in Solid State Technology
there was a thread about this on this board some time last year...ill look for it -
I use a custom heavy set with a wound .22 g string on my les paul...i guess thats close...good tone, hard to play fast runs, but thats not my thing j

Lighter picks and self control...picking wth fingers i usually lighten up on my bass attack...when recording i keep the mic a foot away aimed at the twelfth fret and us a customized high pass filter with some compression...live i make sure the bass i rolled off and use a rubber feedback eater these are the custom lights i use http://store.daddario.com/category/144853/...tom_Light_11-52 i also have gone mostly from my martin D-42 to a SWOMGT because i prefer the less full body and tighter tone...my SWOMGT has solid cherry back and sides which imparts a far more crisp tone compared to the m

wow take a weekend off to gig and i miss all of this fwiw i use daddario custom lights I suspect a lot of your bass issues are because you have a nice beefy dread, lighter gauge strings might help, but youll lose sustain and tone...embrace the dread, youll likely learn to adjust your technique to deal with the boominess

Effect pedals for Acoustic Guitars, etc.
In a little rowboat replied to stagerug's topic in Solid State Technology
I can help a bit...i know Jeff uses both volume pedals and a EH Holy Grail reverb with an expression pedal...i think this combo is what you hear...he also has dual sources on his guitars, so he might have blended mag sound hole pickup with the UST to change the sound a bit I so far as pickups go...i have tried as many as i could find as i play almost exclusively acoustic...i use Fishman Matrix Infinity pickups in my acoustics...they are simply the best sounding and most reliable in the majority of live settings (ever one being different)...USTs can sound quacky, but are solid sounding--a goo -

question re vintage guitar repairs
In a little rowboat replied to MattZ's topic in Solid State Technology
id say oceanman and lance pretty much covered what id have said...a word on glue...repairs should be done with titebond or hideglue only...in extreme cases epoxy is used but only as a lifesaving last resort, superglue only to attach a new nut...also, i regard to repairs, any reglue must remove the original glue first, any other repair is not acceptable, as glue does not bond to old glue, heat or not... Structural repairs impact the sound of the guitar of course (loose braces, lifting bridge, neck reset) but crack repairs if done correctly generally dont impact or change the sound much...also
