  1. NBC reporting Rahm Emanuel accepts position of White House chief of staff.

wtf? I was trying to figure this out last night and am too lazy to look through the state constitution... do we hold a special election to replace Obama's seat (and I guess maybe Emanuel's?) or does (oh please no) the governor appoint someone?

  2. I'd be happier to hear that they were adopting an adult dog from the animal shelter. Who the hell is going to be running a puppy outside five times a night when you live at the white house?

They're supposed to be adopting one. Maybe he said puppy because it sounds cuter than dog. Anyway some months back the AKC sponsored a poll to see what kind of dog they should adopt, and I am not a fan of promoting purebreds when there are so many fantastic mutts out there. Plus I mean, how hypocritical would that be? :stunned

  3. I know Fox News gets ripped, but I really thought it had the fairest and best coverage of the night. The even better thing about it were they never took themselves too seriously. Again, I think the complaints about Fox News are more of a perception versus reality thing.

I think it's Fox News's pundit-heavy shows that give them the bad rap. Whenever Brit Hume is at the helm, I definitely think they have the most objective coverage. I mostly watched CNN and Fox News but as the night went on found myself more and more just watching Fox News.

side note: did you see when Rove did Hook 'em Horns and hummed part of the fight song!?

Agreed on the Fox News/Hume sentiments. They also seemed to be the most conservative in calling states. Williams was fighting the tears. Even Rove was pretty good and acknowledged the weight of the situation.

    Yes.

  4. I laughed, screamed, and cried in Grant Park and danced all the way down Michigan Ave amidst throngs of people. This was the most inspiring (and surreal) night of my life and I will never, ever forget it.

(sorry I didn't end up seeing you, Kim)

I did that stuff too!! (next time :cheekkiss)

    Here's a button I bought:

  5. I was a latecomer to the rally tonight and barely made it for Obama's speech but the atmosphere was INCREDIBLE. My friends and I left my place when Obama's total hit 207 and were only halfway to Grant Park when the train conductor got on the speakers and announced that Obama had just won. Insane!

What an amazing historic night. Being American history grad students, we all bought buttons from street vendors specifically commemorating the "history" aspect! :lol But seriously, we were all so proud to be a part of it: me the born-and-raised third generation Chicagoan, Pete the Republican-turned-more-liberal from Pennsylvania who broke family tradition and voted for Obama, and Emily from Arizona who voted for McCain but I still love her anyway.

  6. We have new ones down here like a scrantron. You fill in the ovals with a black pen and then send it through a machine. It was easy but you don't get any kind of confirmation from the machine.

That's what absentee ballots were like here when I did one a few years ago. I just trusted that it got somewhere and was counted properly.

  7. This time, no one was asked to show ID or a voter's card, but, they did have people sign a paper slip - which had the person's signature on it. Then, a perforated bar coded tab from that sheet was broken off and taken with the voter - and after voting, the perforated tab of paper was given to a poll worker on the way out.

It's so interesting to hear all the different methods of voting. We only had the touch screens when I early voted last week, but if I voted today I would've had the paper option as well.

  8. My roommate is in grad school. She could have voted in her home state or here, and she based her decision on important issues on the ballot in each state. Since her home state will easily go red, she decided to vote here. She's lived here year-round for six years now, so she considers herself a resident.

One of my grad school friends is from Pennsylvania and voted in Illinois. I wanted to smack him.
