  1. i was thinking of maybe just setting up a totally separate PayPal account for it... as you can actually pay for your hosting with Godaddy directly from PayPal. then i could just post the logs publicly at the end of each month/quarter/year or whatever, so people can all see the money that is incoming and outgoing? (i'm all for transparency) i've used PayPal a lot in the past, but i'm curious if there is a way these days to avoid all of their fees? i know there used to be, but then my old account got "upgraded" to where they now take a decent % out on each transaction. the new server i've
  2. yeah, maudie and the other admins are working on this as i type this, i was just being snarky i've come up with a couple good Dedicated server options which Via's cost would only be about $45-55 a month (it's much cheaper if i buy a server for a 2 year contract)
  3. then they should cough up the dough so i don't have to cover the monthly costs on my own often
  4. it may come down to that to get any actual work done without having the server completely unusable... for now i'm going to just disable a lot of the more CPU intensive features of the site, so that i can stay sane. i'm gone in Chicago all weekend too, so won't really have any time if stuff goes down.
  5. yeah... this load appears to be too much for the server to be even remotely useful i really don't know what to do at this point, it's not far to the other sites on the server to be down as a result of Via... edit: experimenting with tweaking MySQL... this is a trial & error process unfortunately, so bear with me
  6. fantastic album/band... just got to hear the remastered version that Frenchkiss are putting out in August, sounds great
  7. if you look at the stats, we're also at our highest usage in the history of Via the last week (no doubt as a result of Jay's passing), so hopefully that will recede soon.
  8. hmm... apparently some certain browsers were shut out from loading this morning (Safari for sure), weird... i think i've got that part fixed at least (even though it wasn't really a "fix" so much as giving PHP more memory, which i didn't really want to have to do... *sigh*)
  9. yeah, the one this morning was that the server was overloaded as for the ask.com thing, sounds like a DNS issue or possibly spyware/ask.com tool bar installed
  10. hmm... it's had some load issues the last day, but prior to that i wasn't aware of any big intermittent connectivity. what error is RainDogToo getting right now?
  11. oh sure... it's def not somewhere i go very often and usually only go if i'm going to a show in the theater or to bowl, but their food is pretty good for a bowling alley after all
  12. weird... never really felt that vibe at the BLB, i mean it's close to where a lot of the more "hip" people live (Uptown), but it's always had a pretty wide swath of types when i've gone. *shrug*
  13. FYI, i turned on "performance mode" which disables a few more CPU intensive features during heavy load times trying to figure out what's causing it to overload the servers CPU/RAM
  14. weird, that works on my iPhone... let me see if i can't find a way to make it at least user selectable, or maybe just add the Opera Mini user agent so that it uses the lo-fi automatically too
  15. weiiiiiiird guess i'll just have to take it on a case by case basis for now... i suppose i could disable HTML embedding now that they have that insert media function tho!
  16. great place. Andrew Bird used to play the small theater (cap. 100-ish) there ALL the time too
  17. http://forums.viachicago.org/topic/40199-youtube-test/ same problem?

  19. the youtube embed... wonder if the way it converted old embeds messed something up? let me try something
  20. honestly, i realize some people's employers have inempt IT dept's and are still running IE6, but if you're running IE6 at home you're putting yourself at a huge risk to spyware, viruses, etc., in addition to just having usability/readability issues with various sites (not just Via) besides IE 5.2 for the Mac, IE6 is the worst piece of shit excuse for a browser that has ever existed and it has made web developers life a living hell, but no longer! we've revolted! that and Msft has released 2 versions since.
  21. interesting... not sure about that one at the moment.
