nice! i'm photographing him in Mpls in a few weeks, can't wait
-
Jeff is playing the Fargo Theater on July 9th
-
i actually like Strangers Getting Stranger a bit more...
-
$28 for the deluxe LP is a killer deal if you ask me (and yeah, w/ shipping mine was $34-ish) too many bands have these like $60-150 deluxe versions, which for a single NEW album is just silly to me
-
all of those dates with The Rosebuds opening too! i'll be at the Milwaukee shows, possibly Chicago
-
i can understand that... but i guess myself, i saw the band twice before the debut album even came out and loved them from the first note of that first show this is still probably in my top 3 on the year as well
-
i loved Dents + Shells quite a bit too
-
can't wait... it's been too long. hoping it's better than Meadow tho, wasn't my favorite of his
-
yeah? i'm not really feeling the new one too much
-
i've absolutely loved all 5x i've seen them J. Tillman (drummer) could be a stand up comedian if he wanted
-
finally got to see him open for Budos Band (they backed him as well) a few weeks ago... AMAZING. Budos were pretty fabulous too.
-
there's no real rocker like Aluminum Park or Remnants, no, just a bunch of slow builders, but overall the album is very much midtempo. and 'Slow Slow Tune' is definitely very schmaltzy, but Wonderful is very nice.
-
so, i like the album (prolly would give it a solid 7/10)... and probably better than Evil Urges overall, but def would put it 4th or 5th in their catalog. really love tracks 1, 3, 7 and 8. kind of a bummer that it ends on 2 downers (esp. Slow Slow Tune, not a big fan of how Jim sings on that one). would have liked at least one rocker though
-
i was kinda happy to see Pfork didn't score it quite as high as the debut... as much as I do love it, there's still 2-3 songs on that one i like way more than anything on HB. that said, it's a much more fully fleshed out and realized album. def in my top 5 on the year for sure
-
musically? the breakdown is pretty badass, sure. the rest of the song however didn't do much for me live at all
-
exactly... i dig Ween a bunch too. i've learned over the last few years that Jim is just a really weird dude with a sense of humor that doesn't exactly jive with what I find humorous or amusing and i'm fine with that.
-
sometimes... if it's a truly great song. but there's a fine line between fun/goofy and stupid/lame imo (that Built To Spill song is clever imo (see also: You Were Right). Highly Suspicious is just too campy for me to find funny/goofy unfortunately :/. But the worst part about that song isn't the lyrics, it's Jim's vocals. of these, the only songs i really like much are Pecan Pie & Kingpin, never really cared for I'm A Wheel or Kicking TV. I can take or leave WTS
-
yep and yep :/ it reminds me of Ween
-
for me it's the kid's choir that annoys me most... it just doesn't fit/work for me. and i don't think Jim's strained falsetto sounds all that great in this instance either.
-
i like it quite a bit, but would put it #3 or #4 in his catalog
-
not a big fan of 'Holdin' On To Black Metal', but i wouldn't say i hate it either :/ Jim has a pretty good falsetto at times, but this is not a very good example of it. it sounds like he took a hit of helium before the take . i don't mind the horns or overall riff/melody (that Jim lifted (with credit) from an old Thai soul compilation), but i definitely don't care for the kids choir, doesn't fit imo.
-
it's just too dumb for my taste unfortunately musically it's kinda fun, but the lyrics + Jim's vocals? yep yep! going to both actually
-
meh.

yeah, that was something else... Justin Vernon joined for Terrible Love to close out the show
