  1. When Doves Cry by Cash Cow (That's my old punk band.) Is it cool? You decide.
  2. "Generation X - Gimmie Some Truth" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwmwGiM7XEk Sorry, Lennon fans, but this version is MUCH better than John's original version. (I just wish that I could find the original album version on YouTube, but alas... This is still pretty close.)
  3. Like Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect" by Otis Redding. Yeah, I didn't realize that she wasn't the original artist either until a few years ago. I'd say her version of that song is even more definitive than Jimi's version of "Watchtower".
  4. The Roches EDIT: Shame on me. I love The Bangles!
  5. now: a Material Issue compilation -Valerie Loves Me -Very First Lie -When I Get This Way (Over You) -What Girls Want -Don't You Think I Know -Goin' Through Your Purse -What if I Killed Your Boyfriend?
  6. Cleaners From Venus - Living With Victoria Grey
  7. Kinda. She was the singer on Arrested Development's hit "Tennessee".
  8. In the past couple of years this has happened to me a couple of times: "Teach Your Children" by CSNY: Nailed me emotionally like it never had before, as I was finally really hearing it from a parent's point of view. I got it in a whole new way. "Lola" by The Kinks: Blindsided me as, after all these years, hearing it so many dozens upon hundreds of times, the incredible songcraft -- the subtlety of Ray's wordplay and the incredible melody broke through the mental callouses formed by so many years of overplay. It was like a whole new song. Today, it was: "La Grange" by ZZ Top: Of course,

  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH0CnjXqCLE Oh, and the upbeat songs, live... are a dervish. Amazing.
  11. OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW One of the best live bands that I have seen in a long time. Really, really great. Strongly suggest that, if you have interest in bluegrass/newgrass/whatever, you RUN to get tickets to see them when they come to town. Closest thing to a Dead show that I have seen since seeing the Dead, themselves. Only much higher-energy. Everybody dancing everywhere. Also, Dolly Parton put out a pretty great bluegrass record a few years ago (1999) called The Grass is Blue. As unoriginal as the album title is, Dolly does not disappoint. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNj5P6SpdRo
  12. Maybe the best cover ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQZNkzP4kYw (And it works as an "incongrous" one, too. Sly doing Doris Day?!?!)
  13. Here are a couple of good ones from Linus of Hollywood: "Need You Around" (Smoking Popes) "Goodbye to Romance" (Ozzy Osbourne)
  14. Another Bangles cover. Bangles do Emitt Rhodes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADGCSZaSIFk And I love BF so very much. I am checking out that video now, Crow Daddy! Thanks! EDIT: Awesome.
  15. I really wish that some other folks would cover other Bobby Fuller songs, too. He has so, so many great tunes that are BEGGING to be covered. And how about this one, played the way that it always was meant to be played: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFRx4PkXeVM
  16. Couldn't find the studio version of this one. But that hardly matters, as they are one of the best live bands that I have ever seen: Primal Scream does Roky Erickson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaUTRD8vx-A
  17. Breeders do Beatles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo5iSQ_ff88
  18. How about ANOTHER "Waterloo Sunset"? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7-TbC_Pr-4
  19. I'm not being defensive! YOU'RE BEING DEFENSIVE!!! I'LL SHOW YOU DEFENSIVE!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uABnKRPHMVk
