  1. Reckless Records on Broadway. From the Vic: just go straight east on Belmont until you hit Broadway and head south. It's only about 2-3 doors south, on the east side of the street. It's an easy 3/4-mile, or so walk. That's the store where I saw Neutral Milk Hotel play an in-store back in 1998, if that tells you what kind of a place it is. A little farther away, but still a short drive from the Vic, is the store that most of the Chicago crew thinks is the best one in town: Laurie's Planet of Sound on Lincoln Ave., in the Lincoln Square neighborhood.
  2. In the car on the way home, it'll be:
  3. My gear will impress absolutely nobody, but it does the job, and I've had guys with $2500 Gibsons ask to play my Strat on sessions, instead of their own guitars, just because they like the way it feels. It's magic. Me with "Susan" -- My 1988 Squier Strat; heavily modified. (Chandler "Hot Rails" pickup in the bridge position, with coil-splitter switch, graphite nut, and blocked trem). I play it through a Peavy Delta Blues 115 And my only stomp box is a Turbo RAT My acoustic is a 1993 Epiphone EO-1 I also have a cheap Regal resonator guitar that I can't find a representative pictur
  4. She became such a joke at some point: Her marriages. Her weight. The drugs. Her generally zany persona. But there is no arguing Liz' talent or beauty in her time. This is a huge loss for Hollywood, if only for the history that she represents. Rest in peace. LINK
  5. Very early cover of a very early David Bowie song. (No, Bowie is nowhere on this recording.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBLktpmOABw
  6. Don't have a turntable anymore, so I need it on cd.
  7. Does anybody have this album? it features this song (which I only just heard today): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fv1r16kIqE&feature=related But I have their first album, Flame, and I love it. They're a Melbourne, Australia band with Phil Calvert (Psychedelic Furs, The Birthday Party) on drums. Driving, bluesy rock. Like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion without the cheek. All of their albums are out of print (and some totally unavailable on CD), but I would still love to see what I can dig up from these guys. Any help is appreciated.
  8. BGO records released the Brinsley Schwarz twofers, and the remastering job on those is outstanding.
  9. I just had a Shamrock Shake last week. Still tastes good!
  10. My favorite moment of the movie. I just about squealed at that line, and I think that I may have been the only one in the theater who got it.
  11. Paul: Not as good as I had hoped, but still a lot of fun. I liked the little sci-fi in jokes, but I'm sure that I missed more than I caught. I am sure that it will be vilified by the folks who love their earlier movies. Not because it was a bad movie (it wasn't a bad movie). But lots of folks will say it was awful because it wasn't as good as their earlier ones. Plus, it's about time for the backlash. Here it comes. Yes, I will watch it again when it comes out of DVD.
  12. Just saw this YouTube: Meh. Too blatantly revivalist, yet not as skillfully done as something like The Dukes of Stratosphear, who had the songs to go along with the sound. I'll check out some more of their songs, but if this is the best that they have to offer... nevermind.
  13. This just sounds like something that is right up my alley, and right up the alley of a lot of folks here. Anyone know it? Have anything to say about it? Mentioning power pop, Kaleidoscope, and early Brian Eno records in the same review? Any takers?

  15. One of my favorite songs of all-time. While most folks who know this song know it as a Dave Edmunds song, it was actually written by Jim Ford, and I am more familiar with it as a Brinsley Schwarz song. (And theirs is my favorite version.) Still, this is a pretty good version. Loves me some Webb. (The song performance begins around 1:40 or so.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6zv_NXv2yA
  16. I don't know that album. Although I can certainly be persuaded to know it!
