How about one about COOL covers?
PopTodd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song
Okee-dokee. I'll repost just the names of the good ones that I posted from the other thread here and then find you some more cool ones: Toots & The Maytalls - "Take Me Home Country Road" (John Denver) Richard Hell & The Voidoids - "All the Way" (Frank Sinatra) Hüsker Dü - "Love is All Around" (Mary Tyler Moore theme) Dwight Yoakam - "I Want You to Want Me" (Cheap Trick) I'll find some more good ones. -
The oddest, most incongruous covers that you can think of

A lot of those incongruous covers ARE cool! Like this one that I just posted in that other thread simultaneously to you posting this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22hgDjUB8EM&feature=related -

Absolutely nothing against the TDN version at all. Just saying that their version is a lot better-known than the Nilsson original. And a lot less connected to the things that Aimee Mann usually does, musically. And, if one (pardon the unintentional pun) does not know the Nilsson version, which most folks don't, it seems quite incongruous. -
Congratulations!

As great as their last album was, I am really excited for this one. Coming out tomorrow! Curious to see if they are staying on the same arena rock tip that they had on Judy, of if they go back to the more Eastern-flavored thing that they had on albums like Woman's Gotta Have It or When I Was Born for the 7th Time. They're a fairly inconsistent band, but when they nail it, they really nail it. Hoping they can make it 2 in a row. EDIT: Okay, so AMG already has their (3.5-star) review up. Sounds like it's going in a different direction from Judy. But it still sounds like I'll dig it:

I've been talking up that Dan Penn record for years now. You gotta hear the live one with Spooner Oldham, too!

And then, after checking out all of his early stuff, this album from 1990 is also really freaking good: Cale + Eno - Wrong Way Up Looks like the CD reissue has a couple of bonus tracks, but I have an earlier pressing. Go with the reissue. More music almost always = more good. Especially with an album like this one.

Much of it is very informed by classic British literature. Helen of Troy and Slow Dazzle are also pretty great. You can get those 2 + Fear all in this one very essential package (with lots o' bonus tracks, too): John Cale - The Island Years EDIT: But, Paris, 1919 is still his best.

He's on my short list of producers that I would like to work with, if I ever work with any producers (along with Eno and Nick Lowe).

"Macbeth" is the only clue as to who it is. And a perfect album? Agreed. I think that it might be.

I'm not BSing you, bro. Every single one of your shots has been top fucking notch. But still, my favorite was that shot of Tony Iommi's hands. That one is incredible. EDIT: This one

Damn. Lemmy looks good. You know, for Lemmy. He looks the same as he did 30 years ago. And, as always, a great shot. I think you may be the next Jim Marshall.

Like, really horrible.

The Coffee House Sessions -- The Holmes Brothers, Michelle Malone, Crash Test Dummies and then...

One thing that I find intriguing about the record is that his backing band consists mostly of members of Little Feat. Although, you would never know it by the sound of the music.

I envy you your discovery. An amazingly gorgeous album. Enjoy.
