  1. As great as their last album was, I am really excited for this one. Coming out tomorrow! Curious to see if they are staying on the same arena rock tip that they had on Judy, of if they go back to the more Eastern-flavored thing that they had on albums like Woman's Gotta Have It or When I Was Born for the 7th Time. They're a fairly inconsistent band, but when they nail it, they really nail it. Hoping they can make it 2 in a row. EDIT: Okay, so AMG already has their (3.5-star) review up. Sounds like it's going in a different direction from Judy. But it still sounds like I'll dig it:
  2. I've been talking up that Dan Penn record for years now. You gotta hear the live one with Spooner Oldham, too!
  3. And then, after checking out all of his early stuff, this album from 1990 is also really freaking good: Cale + Eno - Wrong Way Up Looks like the CD reissue has a couple of bonus tracks, but I have an earlier pressing. Go with the reissue. More music almost always = more good. Especially with an album like this one.
  4. Much of it is very informed by classic British literature. Helen of Troy and Slow Dazzle are also pretty great. You can get those 2 + Fear all in this one very essential package (with lots o' bonus tracks, too): John Cale - The Island Years EDIT: But, Paris, 1919 is still his best.
  5. He's on my short list of producers that I would like to work with, if I ever work with any producers (along with Eno and Nick Lowe).
  6. "Macbeth" is the only clue as to who it is. And a perfect album? Agreed. I think that it might be.
  7. I'm not BSing you, bro. Every single one of your shots has been top fucking notch. But still, my favorite was that shot of Tony Iommi's hands. That one is incredible. EDIT: This one
  8. Damn. Lemmy looks good. You know, for Lemmy. He looks the same as he did 30 years ago. And, as always, a great shot. I think you may be the next Jim Marshall.
  9. The Coffee House Sessions -- The Holmes Brothers, Michelle Malone, Crash Test Dummies and then...
  10. One thing that I find intriguing about the record is that his backing band consists mostly of members of Little Feat. Although, you would never know it by the sound of the music.
  11. I envy you your discovery. An amazingly gorgeous album. Enjoy.
  12. A friend of mine made a mix for me of 10 songs from this Billy Connelly/Gerry Rafferty band and it was amazing. I've since lost that collection to computer upgrades, but I've been on the lookout for this record: Sadly, its out of print, and all copies that I've seen have been a fortune. Any of y'all fans? Can you help me out with where to find a reasonably priced copy of this thing. "Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway" is one of the greatest songs ever, and the rest that I've heard ain't too shabby, either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMw2h4NORx4 Thanks!
  13. Sadly, that is an album that I am not familiar with. Listening to the title track on YouTube now. Sounds pretty cool; I'm gonna have to check it out. Damnit.
  14. Do I really need an excuse to post this magnificent, transcendental piece of music? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3ueIweuUvo&feature=related Well... happy birthday Mr. Cale.
  15. Oh... I am by no means a great singer, and I have never (and will never) consider myself to be such. However, I apparently have a skill that others find difficult to master: the ability to slip into and out of falsetto on the fly. Yes, sometimes it's a yodel (a la Chris Issak), but, as I am not a totally confident vocalist -- that kinda technique sounds a bit showy to me and I would never want to intentionally call attention to my vocal technique. Still, there are songs that require it, the way that they were written. I just thought it was something that anybody who could sing falsetto at all
  16. Nice, Lam. I like your songs. They good. (And, have you noticed that in "Strawberry Fields Forever", only the title PHRASE is in 3/4. The rest of the song is 4/4. And it's seamless. Fucking Beatles.)
  17. I've seen folks use that capo technique, too, but I've never attempted it, myself. Just like I don't really fuck around with open tunings. I'm enough of a guitar retard (please pardon the term) without any deviations from the norm, that the thought of fucking with that kind of thing makes me cry. I guess the "unusual" thing that I've gotten complimented on that I didn't know that I was doing was writing songs with unusual structures. There have been times that I have done it on purpose (a song on the new album was purposefully written as a linear composition). But, apparently, I've written t
