I played a show this past Saturday. The room was filled mostly with friends and family... and a few people who stepped in from the wind and rain to have a cup of coffee. After my set, one of those strangers came up to me to ask me about a song that I wrote about a friend who served over in Iraq -- twice ["Say You Will (A Reluctant Soldier's Plea)"]. He was a big guy (and I am not). He said, "You know that song that you wrote about the soldier?" "Yeah?" I said, sensing some sort of potential political debate/maybe yelling match/hopefully not fistfight. "Well, I served over in Iraq." I got m

That is extra super cool. Rep. Cohen looks genuinely broke up.

Oh, also, my buddy John (with whom I recorded part of my album) was a part of the Lake Forest (IL) H.S. class of 1988. He had a couple of friends with whom he took a road trip to Florida one Spring Break: Vince Vaughan and Dave Eggers. Not a bad class for making a name for themselves.

Oh, former Chicago Cubs pitcher and current SF Giants color man Mike Krukow lived down the street from me when I was a kid and he was pitching for the Cubbies. He was very cool and even played catch with the neighborhood kids (including me). And, speaking of athlete neighbors: Michael Jordan lived a couple of miles away from me. I ran into him at the local video store around 1986 or so. We exchanged a couple of friendly words, made our rental choices, and then went on our ways. (He rented "I'm Gonna Git You Sukka.")

Pat Metheney gave me a beer once.

Where you at? What local? I also worked with the Teamsters, as summer help through the late 80's and early-mid 90's.

The Brick Cafe and Bookstore 30 N. Genesee St. Waukegan, IL 60079 Saturday, March 20, 2010 7:00 PM There's no alcohol served there, but the food is good and it's a nice room. Just an FYI for any of y'all who might be around and looking for something to do. It's just me, solo/acoustic, which gives me some freedom with the set list and the arrangements. It should be a fun night (mods.: If it's okay for this thread to be in the "Someone Else's Song" forum, I would love it if you could move it. I just didn't want to offend and post it there first; I know that I've become infamous for stepp

My father is a Teamster, who does transportation on a lot of the movies that shoot in Chicago, so I am a single degree away from LOTS of people: Joe Pesci, David Duchovney, Halle Berry, Steve Martin, Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughan, etc., etc. Personally, I have met Daniel Stern, Larry the Cable Guy, and Andi MacDowell. I am also a single degree of separation away from Jeff Tweedy: on several occasions I or my band played at the late, great Lounge Ax, which was owned by Julia Adams and Susan Miller Tweedy. (Thanks so much, Sue!) Also, a good friend of my wife is from Belleville and stood u

Big Star - Pick Some Posies and Let's Play (live @ Metro, Chicago: 1994)
-
I saw the reunited Big Star in 1994. Metro. Chicago. It was one of the best shows that I've ever seen. I brought my girlfriend at the time and, when we left, she looked me dead in the eye and asked, "WHY have I never heard of these guys before?!!? That was INCREDIBLE!" I married her a couple of years later. Rest in peace, Alex. (A side note: around the time that we got married, I found a copy of that show on "import" CD. I'm listening to it now, in tribute.)

Now playing all the Nilsson tunes that I have on my iTunes on "shuffle". It's a beautiful thing.

Their second-best album (after Parklife).
