Roky Erickson backed by Okkervil River on his new album!
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
A former bandmate of mine actually had dinner with Roky and his brother the last time that they came through Chicago. (He's friends with Roky's former drummer -- Freddy Krc). According to his first-hand (albeit, one-time) account of the relationship between Roky and said brother, brother is very protective of Roky. And it was definitely Roky that wanted to start touring again. Again, this is a one-time meeting, but that was the very strong feeling that he got. -

Are they profiting off of his pain, or off of his talent? I argue that it's the later. And, not knowing the band members, I would give them the benefit of the doubt that they are actually fans, who are stoked to be playing with the legend. Nobody is a fan of the pain; they're fans of the music. -

High-quality, rap artist that AREN'T too nasty
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Thanks for the recs! It doesn't have to be "happy" per se. Just not too nasty. -
I have a 10-year-old who is really getting into rap music. And, as somebody with only a passing interest in the genre (I love some, but just don't know enough), I am having a hard time navigating the sea of "Parental Advisory"-labeled CDs. I mean, I am okay with him hearing a few "F" bombs, but truly nasty things -- derragotory comments about women, explicit sexual content, violent imagery, etc. -- is not okay with me. If there is anger there, it shouldn't be backed up with violent solutions and there should be some sort of message, of some sort. So far I am letting him listen to: Eric B.

um... Hop On Pop - Chicken on a Bicycle (2/16) I'm excited for it.

I need to pick this one up. I've only heard one song from it, but it's a great song. And I still love Appetite For Destruction (despite Axl's voice).

I voted Jack White, but you are absolutely correct. However, Pollard is the most-prolific artist of any decade, really. Good call.

yo. Did you set up a page at IAC Music? I would love to check out your tunes and add them to the page, but I can't do anything for you until you do.

My suggestion for recording with ProTools: Don't think of the shortcuts as "cheats". Look at all those "cheats" -- the copy and pasting, the ability to move individual notes around -- as another creative tool. There is a lot of cool stuff that you can do with it. For the record that I just finished (that's coming out next month), I used some of that to create loops and then build a drum part in 3-part rounds. [beavis and Butt-Head] It was cool! [/beavis and Butt-Head] Be open to everything at your disposal; it's just another tool, just like the instrument you play.

I'm listening now (I'm only partway through "Between the Lines") and I'm already hearing both Jay Farrar and Sloan influences. Gotta say, them's some pretty nice influences to have. I'll listen to "Zero" and then decide which one to put at the station. Very nice work, Tanner! Just another great VC band, I guess! (Maybe we can share a bill sometime?) EDIT: Added "Between the Lines".

I have a friend who used to play drums with Kim in his old band back here in Chicago. And I've tried to like them, believe me, I've tried; I just don't. Still, it's good news for their fans.

Hey Matty. Really nice tune; I dig it with a big shovel! It's got a good Son Volt feel to it. Added to the station. Todd
