Another new song of mine is up (rough mix)
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Thanks for listening and for commenting! Yeah, the record is going to be completely different from song-to-song. I also have a guitar/piano/viola ballad, that Cash-like song, an electro-pop thing, some ambient pop, Bakersfield Honky Tonk, punk, and all sorts of combos thereof. So, the next time I post something, you can expect it to sound nothing like either of the other ones that I've posted before. I do appreciate the ear, though. Thanks. -
Did you see them on that "reunion" tour in the 90's -- with Auer and Stringfellow filling in for Bell and Hummel? I saw them in Chicago, had no idea what to expect, and was blown away. They were brilliant! (At least that night.)

Did a search on it (with several keywords) and could not find the thread. So... link? Or, let's just talk about this one here.

Depends how much coffee it drinks. -
I have a rough mix of another new HoP song up for streaming for the next few days: "Tortured Artist" Yeah, there'll be tweaks/additions to the arrangement. I'll probably re-do some vocals, and certainly will EQ some of the stuff a bit differently. But I'm curious to know your reactions to what I have there to start. Yeah, this was what I did this weekend. Thanks.

The Buzzcocks were pretty shit-hot too when they got back together.

Pavement Shrimp Boat Brinsley Schwarz (what I've heard of the live recordings is killer)

From what you said, I'm thinking that Margarine Eclipse sounds more like the Stereolab that I like. That's more Mars Audiac-ish, no?

My NEW favorite of the year: Okay, so a disclaimer: This is my friend John, whom I recorded with over the weekend. We had a great time over the weekend and he gave me a copy to take with me. But that said, this is a helluva record -- probabaly his best one yet. And that's saying a lot. And yes, it is my favorite of '08 so far. For fans of: Eels, Magnetic Fields, Beck, GBV, Yo La Tengo, and other indie pop of that ilk. Streaming sounds HERE.

I wanna live there. My kids would have a blast!

PS - Did I already say that I love Pete? (just bought A Quick One last week.)
-
Yes. But, for me, a great lead guitar player should grab me by the throat and squeeze every last bit of emotion out of the song. (example: Ira Kaplan on "Pablo & Andrea"... brings it to a higher place. And yet, most guitar players would not place him among the most technically proficient.) But, maybe this is for a different thread?

Agreed. But that said, there are no parts of his (lead-wise) that jump out at me immediately. However, I can will and do rock to the acoustic intro to "Pinball Wizard".
-
Pete is a great rhythm player and a good (but not great) lead player. Period. Besides, it's his songwriting... now, that is a thing of beauty. Oh and one more myth to explode: Jimmy Page played the guitar solo on The Kinks' "You Really Got Me".
-
Ringo is not a good drummer. Pete Townshend is a great lead guitar player.
-
Have you used that one before?

I was 10 and I knew is was something of a big deal. He was a Beatle, and I knew what that was. But when my 5th grade teacher suddenly changed our reading assignment to a discussion of "poetry" that included "Woman" and "Crippled Inside", it really hit home. This guy was just cool.
