  1. I'll second the rec for The Time Traveler's Wife, especially if you have it on hand. Start reading

Thanks for the link - it's an interesting selection, at least there's a write-in option! I'll have to check out Phillips, thanks for the tip.
  3. My vote would be for Pulp Fiction, followed by Reservoir Dogs.
  4. Star Wars for me, but it'd be really hard to pick a second as there are so many good choices (ok, it'd probably be LOTR, Godfather III ruined the trilogy for me).
  5. I had to do this in a corporate-sponsored MBA course... it's easier to do if you can see the people, and their body language when making the 3 statements
  6. True, I haven't bothered to do this though. I bought the Mac version of Office mostly just to see what it was like and I got it for a huge discount. I may end up doing this for Netflix though, as the on-demand movies and shows don't work on the Mac OS. But, the videos have problems on my Windows machine too, so haven't bothered. Waiting for improvements on the Netflix end.
  7. I got the Elliott Smith book for my birthday -- an excellent gift for any Elliott fan
  8. UHD (Universal HD) is airing Northern Exposure. However, it is not in HD, so not 16:9 ratio.
  9. Rose's return is great news! Thanks! I've been re-watching season 2 on BBC America, and the two-part finale aired this weekend (the first part). Part 2, and Rose's last ep, is next weekend. Now I don't have to be so glum (again)!
  10. You iPod will work fine on the Mac. MacBooks don't come with Office for the Mac, so you'd have to purchase if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  11. This is a great thread for xmas suggestions, I have no idea what to get gift-wise for my husband. Oh, and Keens rock! I have 2 pair, one is backup for when my current pair wears out... if they ever do! As for me, I can't honestly think of anything I want for xmas, so I'll second (or third, etc.) the peace on earth.
  12. I used messenger bags for years to haul my laptop and other stuff to and from school and work -- but then started having neck problems that the one-shoulder bag made worse. Now, I use backpacks. I guess they're not as cool, but damn, they make a huge difference! The weight is evenly distributed across both shoulders and no neck problems. I had Timbuk2 messenger bags, they held up well, but I ended up selling my last one on eBay. A good place for shopping for the right bag is REI if you have one locally. See them in person and "try them on". Then, go online and buy cheaper (REI's winter sale
  13. We have 3 laptops and 3 desktops in our household. Laptop-wise my husband has a Dell and it's a piece of plastic crap, I have a ThinkPad for work, and I have a MacBook for my personal computer. I LOVE my MacBook. It's very good quality and no Windows issues. They are pricey (but so are ThinkPads, and that was my other choice as I'm rough on my laptops due to travel), but worth it. If you're a student, be sure to find out the current student deals. I got a discount through work, and at the time there was an awesome student deal, but alas, my student days are behind me. And, yes, almost everyo
  14. A kindred soul I do the same thing, and my husband always questions why I don't just get the DVD... but I like having music on my DVR. That way, when I'm waiting on a long download or something equally mindless, I can watch Austin City Limits or Sunken Treasure on the DVR -- and not have to move my laptop, get out from under the blanket (our house is cold), avoid tripping over the dog, fire up the DVD, switch over to video, etc.
  15. Well, there's always your local Blockbuster... but I'm not a fan as they censor films. Another option is buying a copy -- $10.99 new on Amazon, $16.99 for Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi "2 Pack" -- and lots of cheaper options used. Or, find a good independent video rental shop. Too bad Netflix fails on this one, but it's not the first time.
  16. Most probably do - I do, but I'll probably have it on anyway tomorrow morning because it's easy (yes, that sounds really lazy). I usually have CNBC on since I work from home, and CNBC has info relevant to my job, but this will be a better way to start the day And for those of you who don't have the DVD, it's $16.99 at Amazon right now...
  17. Just a reminder, the Sundance Channel is airing "Jeff Tweedy: Sunken Treasure - Live in the Pacific Northwest" tomorrow, Tuesday 27 November. 6am EST & PST - check the site for your local times: http://www.sundancechannel.com/films/500203265
  18. The "save" option didn't work for me in Safari, but it does work in Firefox (Firefox rules!). Can't speak to IE's capability as I don't use it on my Mac, which is my personal machine (work machine is a Windows-based laptop, but I keep work as separate as possible from life). I made it to 50 for a brief while -- but I also got to 10,000 words so it's not like it didn't take some effort - and time
  19. We don't have Moe's in Washington state, but when I lived on the East coast we did -- and in our area they voided the frequent buyer card because of counterfeit cards... and, of course, I had a free burrito owed to me. It was not honored and it was a "real" Moe's card. So, hope that the people in your area are more honest or Moe's will take away your frequent buyer card privilege!
  20. I never see films in the theatre, I wait for the DVD and watch at home. But, I realize that a lot of people do see the films when they are released, so I avoid dedicated threads to those with spoiler-alerts. But, I also avoid reading any posts that are lengthy about films I haven't seen yet, just in case there are spoilers. In the end, by the time I see No Country for Old Men, any spoilers will have been forgotten
  21. Also according to the FAQ, the words are supposed to get progressively harder. I didn't notice much change, but I did start getting a lot of repeats. Still, this is a good way to waste some time while watching TV or while not working And, here's where you can see your #s in the totals since inception: http://www.freerice.com/totals.html
  22. The highest level is 50 according to the FAQ on the Free Rice site. It says most people don't get above 48, for those of you who are keeping score for yourselves
