  1. I actually watched Pan's Labyrinth again the next day before I mailed it back to NetFlix. It was that good! I'm sure I'll have it sent again, such a beautiful film.
  2. I was doing my best with trying to time things so that I'd have a new movie for every day of my week-long break from work. No new red envelopes in the mail today though, so it'll have to be a repeat from the permanent collection. Here's what I have it narrowed down to, it'll ultimately depend on mood post-Heroes tonight (have not been loving season 2) as to whether I want comedy or sci-fi: Hot Fuzz The Life Aquatic Primer Dark City Donnie Darko Serenity (have been re-watching the box-set of Firefly, kinda want to wait til I'm done to re-watch Serenity again) A day without NetFlix, sigh. Sp
  3. I'm going to chalk it up to being off from work today (thus my computer savvy is also on holiday) as to why I missed the .csv file and only saw the .pdf file with the top 1000 names. My married name is on it, it barely makes the top 20,000, but it's there.
  4. Ok, now you've balanced out my old-age feelings with some young and hip ones But, I do have the storage issue with my iPod too, it's been full for a long time now, and every time I add something new to it, I have to delete something old -- which I why I hesitate to get rid of the CDs, I guess. That, coupled with 3 hard drive failures in as many months on one of my laptops, has made me extra-cautious.
  5. I don't have any nicknames as an adult, pretty boring. All my childhood nicknames were mean and cruel, like: "Bugs" after Bugs Bunny, this was a pre-orthodontia nickname "Bean Pole" or "String Bean" because I was skinny "Nerd" because I skipped a grade in school and got straight A's (the lack of creativity of this one speaks to the people who gave it to me) So, of the nicknames I hated as a kid, as an adult, my teeth are fixed and I'm happy to be thin and have done well in school
  6. I use Half.com too, and also the individual dealers from Amazon (the "marketplace") with good ratings. I also use eBay occasionally, sometimes you can get a deal there, depending on timing and such. I don't mind used CDs as I just copy them to iTunes and my iPod anyway. I'll have to try out some of these other suggestions. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the lone CD-buyers anymore! Good to have some new places to look for deals. This brings up another topic though and that's what to do with all these CDs... I keep them because it's a pain to sell them online and because they're my backup
  7. Whether fortunate or unfortunate, both my husband and I have a keen interest in guitars... fortunate as we have a nice collection, but unfortunate because we have to curtail spending on that particular hobby. And more unfortunate for me because I'm more of a collector, and like to buy guitars to have them around, I guess how some people collect art -- my husband is the voice of reason though, and a $6K acoustic that isn't vintage doesn't pass the test. Now, to use this guitar to convince him that a nice long neck ES-330, preferably a 69 TDC, isn't too pricey! Or a vintage J-45 if I want a mo
  8. My last name doesn't make the top 1000 -- but there are only about 800 people in the country with my last name, some of whom are actually famous Meanwhile, my maiden name, which is now my middle name, is in the top 50.
  9. Having been through many such spots with cats past and present, many empathetic vibes! Hope all goes well, vibes all around from my household, human, feline, and canine too
  10. Last night was Pan's Labyrinth -- an excellent movie with amazing visuals. The director/writer directed The Devil's Backbone and Hellboy, but this one was far above either of those movies. It's been referred to as a "fairy tale for adults" and I would agree that it's not appropriate for children (it is rated R) due to some sinister real-world violence, but the labyrinth and the fantasy world are full of some of the most creative and haunting images I've seen in film in a long time. Definitely one of the best films (and this deserves the designation of "film") I've seen in years. Highly recomme
  11. If you have to buy a new one, don't forget to check eBay. Much cheaper, and I bought a phone there in the past for a trip to India (needed an international phone, back before I had a quad-band phone with my regular plan).
  12. Nice guitar, would be a welcome addition to our collection, but given the price, it's not going to happen. That, and the current hold on buying guitars due to "lack of room" in our current small abode I still check Craigslist though everyday for a guitar that will change my husband's mind about the space issue!
  13. My brother did the same thing to his phone, it didn't work for long after letting it dry out completely. But, you may get lucky. If not, the upside is you can get a new phone, granted, you'll have to shell out some $, but I like getting new electronic stuff... maybe I should "accidentally" wash my phone...
  14. A nice West coast afternoon wine break with Castle Rock Barrel Fermented Coastal Chardonnay. I'm working my way up the price range for this week since I have the week off, so this is the cheapest one so far (~$8.99), and it's quite good. Not bad for a lazy Saturday afternoon.
  15. I love The Office and 30 Rock too -- never miss an episode... oh wait, I guess we all will until the writer's strike is over. And, according to The Office writers, the episode the actors had read through, but wasn't filmed due to the strike, was one of the best reads ever. So, just as the Office regains its momentum, it's shut down. Hopefully, the writers will win soon, I want my TV back already! 16. Ok, I've got to admit, if I hear one more Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce commercial -- btw, what's up with the dancing and sales-pitch talk for a phone? -- I'm going to feel either 1) older than I am, or 2) more out of touch than usual. But, then again, I usually won't watch TV unless it's a commercial-free station or I can skip the commercials via my DVR. I probably would've missed the VW ads completely if I hadn't been DVR-less this summer as we drove across the country (East to West coast). And, as much as I hate chains, there were parts of the country where a McD's sign was a huge relief as the
  17. Well, it probably smells like bacon, and a die-hard vegan friend of mine claims that the only time she's tempted to fail her conviction is the smell of bacon
  18. Well, I don't go to Starbucks, so I wouldn't hear music there. I don't like big chains if I can avoid them (disclaimer: I work for a F100 corporation, so I'm just as much a sell-out). I was really conflicted about the VW ads, but I own an Audi, which is owned by VW, so can't complain too much. And, my Audi always has a Wilco, Tweedy, or Uncle Tupelo disc in it But, my husband kids me every time a VW ad is on that Wilco sold out... but at least it's VW and not some not-to-be-named car company I don't like (not named to avoid offending, with a board this size, there's bound to be a wide range
  19. I think brining is supposed to help. I don't cook, my husband does, and he's brined a turkey before. But, I seem to recall that he thought it was more trouble than it was worth. This year we're getting a smoked turkey as our 1923 house has a 1923 kitchen, which is too small to be making a big meal in, and we're having people over. So, leaving the cooking, or in this case smoking, to a professional. We'll do the sides, twice baked potatoes, my grandmother's cornbread dressing, and veggies. Oh, and lots of Champagne
  20. I'll third the Chipotle encounter -- have heard Wilco there before. And, over the summer I read that Starbuck's was playing Wilco too -- but I don't drink coffee, so have never confirmed the Starbucks thing first-person. I found the Starbucks news disappointing, but I guess it's good for Wilco sales. Starbucks has played/sold Beck, Aimee Mann, the White Stripes, etc. Of course, Chipotle's parent company is McDonald's, so that's not much better when it comes to corporate chains. But, I do occasionally get a Chipotle burrito or some McD's fries, just not too often as there aren't any locations n
  21. Oh, another one I forgot: Ben Gibbard - All Apologies (Nirvana) Great cover, and live in Seattle was pretty brave, but it was great. Ben's from the area, so he gets lots of local love.
  22. Yes, there's general consensus in our household that that second version is an homage to Sesame Street -- and in IATTBYH, Jeff Tweedy recounts his brush with Sesame Street fame in the hotel elevator - he met Bob and Bob talked about meeting up with Big Bird
  23. Yes, that was a great cover too. Pleasantville soundtrack slipped my mind.
  24. Am I the only one who gets Dane Cook and Ryan Reynolds confused? They seem interchangeable to me... I guess Dane Cook is supposed to be a comedian and an actor, whereas Ryan Reynolds is just an actor? Their movie roles seem to be the same cocky, wiseass fratboy roles. Although one of them was in Blade 3 - I checked and it was Ryan Reynolds. He played a cocky, wiseass, ex-vamp, so maybe Dane Cook could have played that part too.
