One show I was at (I'm thinking it was either David Byrne, Steve Earle or Richard Thompson - but don't remember exactly) said at the end of the show "I'm gonna go off stage for a few minutes and then come right back on" - I took it as them making fun of the whole encore thing and how everyone knows that they'll come back on regardless of applause

In that first picture you look kind of like your avatar

Yeah, I have a DVD drive on my computer. I find that whenever I'm in front of a tv I waste hours watching crap, so I just got rid of it.

I don't have cable either (don't even have a tv), so I get all these shows from Netflix. I enjoy watching it that way a lot more - you can watch three hours at a time if you want (I've actually watched 5 hours of Carnivale in one sitting). It's a great show, a little slow moving until you get to know the characters, but totally worth it. I watched an interview with Daniel Knauf (the creator) who compared it to reading a 700 page novel...if 50 pages into it you're saying "where's the car chase?", you've probably never read a 700 page novel. But that slow build up gives it a depth and richness

I just finished the last episode of Carnivale and have already put the first season back on my Netflix queue. What a show! It's too bad it was cancelled. I really think this was the best of the HBO series - the mythology is so rich, the character development is well worth the wait, the cinematography is gorgeous...plus I now have a huge crush on Clancy Brown. Brother Justin is even greater a bad guy than Al Swearengen.

Santa Cruz. I'm sure I've seen them at the Trader Joe's downtown. We're off, thanks for the advice...

Cool pics! And thanks for the suggestions. We're not bring a stove, and I didn't want to take dehydrated food, so the food suggestions were very helpful. I wasn't sure if cheese would be okay to eat after hiking in the sun all day, but I'll give it a try. I've never had a Big Sur bar, but they sell them here at the Trader Joe's, so I'll pick some of those up too.

I'm going on my first backpacking trip this weekend (Yosemite ) and was wondering if any one here has any tips or suggestions on what to take/not to take. Also...does anyone have any suggestions for fun camping games?

I just realized the other day that And The Horse They Rode In On is one of my favorite albums. I don't reach for it very often, but when I do I have a hell of a time. Sadly, I wanted to listen to it the other day and I misplaced the cd in some other case, and can't find it.

That's good to hear. Transister Radio is the only one I've previously owned, and I love it. I just bought Post-War off of iTunes...not my preferred way of purchasing music, but I don't feel like walking back down to the record store.

Gahh, I was in a hurry and grabbed the only M Ward they had in the local record store, got home, unwrapped itand and just NOW noticed it's End Of Amnesia. Oh well, this one should be good too, right?

I've been listening his newer stuff for so long, I forgot how good this album is. Next: Nick Cave is the only person I can think of that actually looks cool with a mullet!

Short interview Love You In The Fall sounds fantastic. I'm really excited about this soundtrack.

I was lucky enough to read On The Road when I was 16 and it really changed my life. I love Dharma Bums too. I'm reading for the 8th or 9th time. Such a great book.

I don't post in this thread (or read it very often), but I was looking through it tonight and you have the cutest babies I've ever seen! I think you should start a new thread and just put up new pictures every 2 weeks or so. They are just adorable! -
Wow. There's been very few films that I wanted to start over as soon as the credits started. This was one of them.
-
Time's Arrow is a good one. Part 5 is especially chilling. I think I'll start it again tonight too.

Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten about this. On my way out to buy it now.

Fantastic!

Alan Arkin was my favorite part of this film...and that's saying alot.

I'm really looking forward to The Science Of Sleep (Michel Gondry - Gael Garcia Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg). The soundtrack (from what I heard during the trailer) should be amazing.

Steve Carell on Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show Part 2 Part 3

My favorite (living) author. The name dropping gets a little old, but any fan of Amis (Martin or Kingsley) should read this book. Or this book... This man is amazing too

Saw it this afternoon. I loved the subtle humor. A question about the soundtrack though - I recognized Sufjan Stevens, but from what I could tell, the rest of the soundtrack was just variations on How It Ends by Devotchka. Anything else on there?
