  1. Thanks. I used to be obsessive about collecting every b-side etc but got away from that in the '00's and have recenntly discovered the bonus tracks, to Bad Day: Favorite Writer, Out in the Country and Adagio and these are really good, not sure how i missed them. I have created a folder on itunes for non-album R.E.M. tracks and so far, not including the b-sides/bonus tracks that appeared on Dead Letter Office and In The Attic but including the fan club single songs that arent' xmas related, I'm sitting at around 145 tracks and I know I'm missing a few. If you include the DLO, ITA and all fa
  2. Maybe they have, who knows. Clearly they have missed him as the songs got longer and less focused. Up was a great record but they kind of said it was the last record with BB because his absence had such an effect. Reveal got less focused and ATS was just boring. It's ashame because that isn't a good record because of bad songs but beacause of bad producing and arranging, there are a lot of great melodies on that record. I think Pat McCarthy had a lot to do with this as well, allowing them to get bogged down in mid-tempo blandness. It seems like they are focusing now on the last 2 records
  3. Agree with being underwhelmed at first at Uberlin, not ready to call it a classic but it i really like it.it happened today is my fav so far. I probably haven't anticipated an rem record like this since reveal. Got me in a major rem mood, so much so that i uploaded all my rem stuff on cd to my iPod. Man, i forgot what an rem collection i have, i was obsessive about this band. Can't find my 2004 and 2008 fan club singles though, gotta be here somewhere. I don't think this will be their last record. Could be as they don't seem like the kind of band to do the whole farewell tour thing but
  4. I'm digging it too, wish it would leak already, spent a few hours yesterday looking for it. There's a bogus leak out there which seems to be everywhere.
  5. Did you ever write that up? I would be interested in reading it.
  6. The Final Glyn Johns mix of Get Back is much, much better than Let It Be or Let It Be Naked. I'd be willing to do a B&P for anyone who wants it. I'm not sure they never had any intention of returning, just weren't sure what to do with it until they decided to give it to Spector.
  7. R.E.M. Murmur through Automatic For The People The Who Everything with Keith Moon Velvet Underground I'm assuming the bad ballad being referred to on Let It Be is The Long And Winding Road. As much as I hate how saccarine (sp?) McCartney could get, expecially post Beatles, I like that tune. More so the original Get Back version before Spector added the strings and choir. This is a tough question since most bands that made great records had longevity but that longevity also allowed for a clunker or 2. If The Who broke up after moon dies or R.E.M. after Berry left, you could say those ban
  8. No need to explain, I feel that way about IHT. Not sure about the lyric though, that line "i will make it through the day, then the day turns to night, I will make it through the night" actually to me sounds rather pedestrian. To me, to compare that to, "river to the ocean goes, a fortune for the undertow" is comparing apples to rocks but as always, ymmv. My wife said about Mine Smells... "God, every song of theirs is starting to sound the same." To which my reply was, no shit, it's always been variations on a theme, more or less. As JMS was quoted, he once said that a friend of his said
  9. I freely admit I could be missing something here but I don't get the lovefest for Uberlin. It's good but all the, "it's the best thing since ......" really has me scratching my head. It happened today is the song that I am really digging.
  10. Lifted from a thread on murmurs.com. Review of a listening party in London yesterday: http://www.thesunday...?plckController The return of REM Last night, at a top-secret London bar (Bureau, 13 Kingly Court, London, W1B 5PW to be precise), REM’s 15th studio album was played back to a natter of industry types who may or not own the band’s debut Chronic Town EP, writes Jonathan Dean. The new record is Collapse into Now and has been described pre-release by band members as sounding like Automatic for the People. That record shifted a few million units. Will Collapse do the same? No, o
  11. I hear you, it's a splurge but I rationalize it since I've torrented so much for free in the last year. It does seem kind of crazy that they would limit the audience for this thing to 7,200 people considering the historic significance of the tour, to just say you 7,200 with the $$$ can have it and force people to pirate it for others (which will happen) seems a little anti-dead. They really should have ala carte shows available for download.
  12. Yeah, keeps crashing on me too. When you figure its 22 shows its $20.45 per show and if each show is 3 discs its $6.82 per disc, actually quite reasonable considering it’s off the 16 track masters and the packaging seems like it's pretty elaborate. Seems like this is the type of project where it's really worth buying it as opposed to a torrent.
  13. I agree, saw my first show in '88. I never understood why the hate for '88. People love '87, '89 '90, did they all of the sudden suck for a year in the middle? I think the setlists aren't as adventurous and that is why people don't like it.
  14. Has Charlie done matrixes? I thought all he did was clean up existing boards but I could be wrong. You are right though, this particular one is so clean and crisp, there really is no reason to buy it. Not huge fan of ballad either, of all the Dylan tunes they did, this may be my least favorite. I saw somewhere where they said this was the 2nd and last appearance. That opening 3 of Half-Step/Jack Straw and Lay Me is excellent. For alternate opinions of the worthiness of this pick, check out the thread on GD Vault, they're pissed an '88 was released, especially this one. Not really sure
  15. This show is pretty good. Just snatched the board from etree and really dug the first set. It says its just a sbd master and makes no mention of it being an ultramix but really sounds like one to me, a lot of audience and a really nice mix. Can't imagine how much better the official release will sound.
  16. Yes, good point, I'll use that although I'm not sure they had those tasty soundboards and matrixes in mind at the time.
  17. I agree, at least with DVD's. I was listening t0 6/17/91 over the weekend and would love to have a dvd of the show. You know there was a pro-shot of this and there is really no reason for them not to make it available officially, they don't need to do the big package releases like they just did with the JFK show. If they did want to do it at another time, they probably could and would still have an audience as most people don't know how to burn a DVD. I think they take it down whether it's a multi-track or not which is kind of annoying since most of this stuff goes out of print and
  18. Actually, I think mould looks more like Pete Townshend.
  19. R.E.M. have been running from their "sound" since Driver 8 to varying degrees of success, very successful early, mixed later on. The thing I love about R.E.M. is that the only stretch of records that was really similar was the LRP/Document/Green run and even those have some distinct differences. When they are successful changing it up, Up for instance which for the exception of Daysleeper really sounds like nothing that came before, it is exciting. Part of the issue as I see it is that a) bands are only so talented and most have a few interesting things to say and then fade away or just ma
  20. Now we're talking. How about 1 CD of originals and 1 of covers? EDIT - Bill has been on the last 2 fan club singles. This year on the cover of Christmas, Baby Please Come Home and last year on Crazy Like A Fox and I think Santa Baby.
  21. Yeah I edited the post as I realized I misunderstood. If you haven't, I'd really give Up a 2nd chance. That record to these ears works really well and if you like Daysleeper, I would think you'd dig the rest. It's funny to me all the hate Airportman gets. I absolutely love that song, really captures the disconnected mood of walking through an airport and is perfect lead in to Lotus. Reveal and ATS, ymmv, good things in there but not easy to go start to finish on.
  22. Yes. Just kidding, I could have easily said the Stones instead of U2. I said U2 only because they are contemporaries. I guess that's why they are always compared. And let's not forget about the supergroup, Automatic Baby. P.S. - Your comment about not remembering the songs on Around the Sun is right since that record is not memorable, except for it sucking, although the last 2 tunes I really do like.
  23. I'm sure they do frown considering the guy who started the thing got a gig with WB. Edit - sorry, thought you were talking about frowning on posting DVD footage on youtube. I checked the boards there and there posts about it, one person had one and I e-mailed them but never heard back. No biggie, I need a turntable anyway and will do it my self at some point.
  24. Maybe I dont know where to look That cutting edge stuff is great. They finally officially released that on that IRS years DVD comp of their music videos.
  25. I have it on VHS and vinyl. I don't remember, is the version of Swan on that that different than the LRP verison? I happen to love their cover of (All I Have To Do Is) Dream. I really need a new turntable to convert some of the vinyl I have. I can't find an MP3 anywhere of the 2000 fan club single that has Christmas Time Is Here Again and can't listen to it.
