Yes, we've established that I failed to mention that Leroy, John & Jim all played guitar on AGIB in my first post. I admitted my error, now please stop badgering me for my simple slip-up. I'm only human, dammit. *And vibes are just about one of the coolest sounding instruments ever. My boss plays them in his office nearly every day...love the tremolo effect - think old mysterious spy-movie soundtracks. There's vibes on "Someday, Some Morning, Sometime," from Mermaid Avenue II, run through an echo/delay pedal. I think in Kot's book he said that Tweedy/Bennett referred to it as a

Very, very true - thanks for pointing it out. I guess I was stuck in Jeff/Nels comparison and forgot to mention that...I knew that. I think most of the solos played on the record are Tweedy though. Regardless, my point was that Nels wasn't on AGIB and is not entirely responsible for the meatier guitar sound they have now...

I'd like to point out that Jeff Tweedy was working on his lead guitar work long before Nels Cline joined the band. Just check out the 2001-2003 live recordings...real sloppy in some areas, but constantly improving. I also have to point this out, because apparently some people miss this: Nels Cline was not in Wilco during the recording of AGIB. That's all Tweedy's guitar work on there too. When asked to join the band, after Jeff sent him a copy of AGIB, Nels even said "I'm not sure what I'd do. Jeff's playing so much rad [or other dorky word] guitar on there." Nels joined after AGIB wa

Mabye I just should have not said anything. Didn't mean to get everyone all revved up and snippy this morning. Like I said above, I am DEEPLY appreciative of the effort that goes into capturing & distributing the recordings - there's no "bitching" coming from THIS guy - just observing that some recordings are great and others aren't. That's all. And I'm grateful for a great guy like the Owl who is willing to host the archive and provide all of us Wilco lovers with hours and hours of great material to geek out to. On a personal level, the recordings of the shows that I've been to are -

Right, right. I get it - and it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the enlightenment, Mike. -

I realize those things. It was just an observation, not an attack on anyone or a complaint. I understand if it came off that way, but those are not my intentions. I'm totally appreciative of the effort that people put forth to not only capture the recordings, but to make them available. Check your tone with me, son. -

That is an insanely awesome set list. All of you who went should feel extra lucky for that one. Wow. My only hope now is that there's a super-clean-pristine recording of this coming out in a few weeks. On that note - is it just me, or has the sound quality of live Wilco recordings waned a bit? I've spent countless hours on Owl & Bear, nabbing shows from their super-Wilco-database, and it seems that the best sounding [meaning almost CD-like clarity] shows range from 1995 to about 2005. Not every recording there is perfect, but there are a few that are damn close. Anyway, this sou -
Get the recording at Owl & Bear. It's of great quality and it almost serves as a "greatest hits" of the time for that lineup and has some nice live versions of YHF tunes...gives one a perspective how those songs might have sounded had Bennett remained in the band after that show.

...so I failed to mention those. I like a little here, a little there, but Trace is still what does it for me.

I don't particularly care for American Central Dust: http://andrewzender.wordpress.com/2009/07/07/review-son-volt-american-central-dust/ All of Trace is great, and I like a few songs off Okemah and The Search.

Anyone know if the recording of this show @ Owl & Bear is of stellar quality?

Hi Al, I live in Jackson County, but my in-laws live in Johnson County. Probably the reason I ever venture out that way...it's too shiny. Here's to hoping that Wilco will be here in the fall! http://backtorockville.typepad.com/back_to_rockville/2009/07/wilco-on-the-way.html

That's the first thing that struck me about any Wilco record. And 40-something "nothings" on KT.
-
Thank you! It's as if people don't understand the difference between a melody and one tasty guitar lick in a song. I was gonna stay out of it, but had to just chime in when you pointed this out. Thank you!

what does a cloud of helium sound like?

I was just thinking abou the '05 Vic shows. I know they were officially recorded for KT - but does anyone know if there are other recordings of these nights floating around out there? ANYONE?
-
It's funny I just read this; I've been listening to a show from '01 and couldn't make it through the whole thing. Jeff just sounded miserable singing - very little emotion - and while I enjoyed some of his guitar parts, I think he was still trying to find his way. Some good stuff, some stuff that was too noisy. That being said, I think the '01 quartet lineup sounded great on the A.M. and Being There tunes like Pick up the Change, Should've Been in Love, Why Would You Wanna Live, etc. But as a whole, the first Wilco CD I ever bought was KT and it just blew my mind. Then it was Summereet

Yeah, I realized that I failed to highlight a few other key tracks after I made the post...this show was so good. It was the same night that the big-shiny new Sprint Center arena opened in KC - and Elton John was playing. Jeff made cracks all night long about Elton John that were hilarious. Good quality recording of this show out there too.

Flac is easier than ever now. Just download the FLAC files, and use this program to burn them direct to CD: http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4 Love the program, use it all the time. Although it's generally not recommended, or even condoned, for that matter, you can then rip your CD back into iTunes or whatever program you use and convert them to MP3. Or if you really can't figure all of that out, PM me.

Perhaps the only conclusion that we can come to is that some people [here, that is] want nothing more than Wilco to visit their exact town, play the perfect venue, and perform every song that THEY want to hear. If this were the case, here's to hoping they play a private show just for me in a 200-seat theater in Kansas City, MO, in which I get to invite all of my friends, and Wilco will play nothing but individual requests, like a Living Room show. But seriously... the last time Wilco played KC was 10/13/2007, and boy did we get some rarities. 1. Via Chicago 2. Company In My Back
