  1. WOW! Sounds just like the Red Rocks show when the guys from Okervill River came out on California Stars. Most of them just stood there and either shook something [or played the same three chords on the guitar, it's a simple song] and stepped up to say "California Stars" once in a while. It was very clear they didn't know any of the other words.
  2. If that's the case, then the count at Red Rocks last week was 47(48). I think.
  3. Yes. There's an existing thread with pages & pages of commentary here: http://forums.viachicago.org/topic/38583-wilco-vinyl/
  4. They made some videos in the "Being There" era as well. They're up for purchase on iTunes...
  5. Crossroads is plenty big! The show in October 2007 there was awesome; they pulled out quite a few oldies and Jeff talked smack on Elton John all night, who was playing the brand-spankin' new shiny Sprint Center arena that night. That was the season closer for the Crossroads. Wilco played at the Uptown Theater in KCMO in 2006 and it was plenty big...I remember that show too. Great setlists. Proper etiquette is to wait to ask about a recording at least 30 days after the show. Something will pop up here in the coming weeks.
  6. Jeff did have surgery to correct a deviated septum, but this was part of his recovery from migraines/painkillers, etc. His voice has changed because he's gotten older, no longer smokes, and works at it more. The "Ashes" DVD shows him getting steroid shots after a show while on tour so he can sing up to par night after night. BTW, I've seen many articles that say Jeff's voice has improved since he "recently" quit drinking. WTF? Whatever happened to reporters doing research? Jeff quit drinking in the days of Uncle Tupelo. Kot's "Learning How to Die" book mentions that Jeff fell off the wa
  7. Back in '05 I walked into a record store at school looking for some Wilco, not having heard the group and being extremely curious, due to my friend's constant raving about AGIB. All the store had was Summerteeth, I bought it, and life was never the same. That's the record that pulled me in and sparked my obsession with all things Wilco. I remember forcing my roommate to listen to "She's a Jar" about 1000 times...
  8. I swear, if I read one more review that laments the lack of "experimentation" found on YHF, I'm gonna pull my hair out. It's as if some people have completely forgotten what "experimentation" means at all. Don't you think a band that has put out as many records as Wilco has, each with its own identity and shifts in sound, is "experimental" altogether? Is it not "experimental" to go from A.M. to Summerteeth? Wilco has "experimented" with each album. To say/think that the blips & beeps of YHF [and other sounds/textures heard on the record] are the most true definition of "experimental"
  9. Jeff uses mostly Gibsons and Fenders. *Electric guitars >> Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, Fender Telecaster, Fender Jazzmaster [the hollowbody is also a Gibson, and I'm not sure which model it is. He pretty much uses it exclusively for "Walken," at least when I've seen Wilco. Keeps it tuned in open G] *Acoustic guitars >> Gibsons and Martins, a variety of models & sizes. I believe he also plays a few Larivees... *The Wilco Book has an interesting section on the band's gear, including a lot of Glenn's homemade percussion instruments...
  10. My wife and I made the trip from Kansas City, MO for this one, our third Wilco concert altogether. I have to second everything that's been said here. Amazing setlist, so excited to hear "Can't Stand It" and "Shouldn't Be Ashamed," which ROCKS in this lineup. California Stars was great, although it seemed like the guys from Okervill River didn't know all the words...just stepped up to the mic to say "california stars." Nels vs. Pat on "Hoodoo Voodoo" was epic - Pat should be given a little more room to solo - who knew he was so good!? Anyone notice during "Jesus, Etc." during the lyric 'o
  11. It's not a deck; they're at street level. See the car?

  14. Go crazy here: http://www.owlandbear.com/wilco-archive 7/4/2001 >> Jay Bennett's last show with Wilco, and a damn good one. 10/5/2001 >> @ Majestic Theatre, Detroit. Stripped-down, four-piece Wilco after Bennett was out of the band. Those are two off the top of my head...
  15. David Fricke over at Rolling Stone loves W(TA). Compares it to A.M., actually. I love the Big Star-in-a-barn line. Four out of five stars. http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/28772335/review/28811787/wilco
  16. Absolutely it does! I've been fortunate to have Wilco play in Kansas City in both 2006 and 2007, but I've also traveled to Lincoln, NE and Tulsa, OK for Tweedy solo shows. I'm heading to Colorado tomorrow to see Wilco at Red Rocks on Friday. This is something I choose to do. I choose to save my money and make these trips. I do not gripe about Wilco's chosen tour spots. In fact, when just about any band I love goes on a tour, my wife and I obviously hope for a show in KC, but usually pick the next closest place and determine if we can make a trip happen. And that's the way it goes. Put
  17. Those are interesting observations. I think a lot of Nels' sound(s) on this record have to do with the fact that he wasn't in New Zealand, laying down the live tracks. Pretty much everything he did on W(TA) was an overdub. After putting out the record, now they're going back and re-learning how to play the songs live as an ensemble...an approach they've taken before. It's all good.
  18. Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I can't say that I agree with anything said about W(TA) here. And why do reviewers always have to spend the first three paragraphs attempting to sum up the history of Wilco [...rising from the ashes of UT] instead of just reflecting on the album? For the most part, I agree with what someone said here the other day about music critics being no more qualified than any regular Joe-Schmoe, and that folks shouldn't take album reviews so seriously. We Wilco fans are equally quick to defend our beloved band as we are to attack it. How he finds enou
  19. I posted this yesterday in the album reviews thread.
  20. Stoermer, the following is not directed at you personally, but towards the population in general [fans, critics, etc]: I'm confused as to what people deem as Nels being "reigned in." Some said that he was too quiet on SBS, others have said that his presence is far stronger on SBS than W(TA), some say that W(TA) is heavier on Nels' playing, and some say that he has yet to be "unleashed" on a Wilco recording at all [exclusing KT]. Where did this notion come from that he's just a shredder? What exactly is it that people want from Nels on the recordings? He's got an incredible ear for textu
  21. there is a certain kind of beauty that can only be produced by struggle. there's also a lot of beauty in purity, comfort, and being at peace with oneself as an artist. are we trying to say that jeff's music is less interesting b/c of less conflict within the band? or because he's clean and sober? or is it both?
  22. i'm in the same boat. any luck here?
  23. This is hilarious - read it before it's corrected. The review at allmusic.com has apparently put the text for a review of a Brad Paisley album under the review for W(TA). Read it here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wnfqxzr0ldke
