  1. One very cool aspect to Capaldi's take on the Doctor is he has managed to capture the absolute 'otherness'. The relationship between the Doctor and Clara has become a bit of Peter Pan and Wendy as opposed to the romance novel dreck we were getting the last several years.

I read somewhere the writers were pushing for some kind of romance and Capaldi absolutely (and wisely) put his foot down and said no way.  Even with Tennant and Smith the romance thing just does not work for me so glad to see Capaldi pushing back.

  2. I'm a 1/2 dozen listens into The Monsanto Years and I really like it.  It has a bit of a Greendale vibe to it, which, IMHO, is his last "great(ish)" record.

Nice to hear somebody say that.  I really liked Greendale but it seems to get more negative than positive reviews.  I'll have to give this one a listen.

  3. Spent much of the day doing job search and networking stuff. Being out of a job for the first time in 20 years feels weird.

I just spent the last 5 months unemployed.  It was a strange and humbling experience.  I interviewed in Seattle, Pennsylvania, San Francisco, Oceanside and ended up finding a job about 2 miles from where I used to work.  I will actually be working about 50 feet from Boulder Beer which could be dangerous.  I start Monday.  I just assumed I would be moving to California so I sold my piano, my lawnmower, got rid of 10 boxes of books, etc... thinking I would need to downsize. Now it turns out I'm staying.  I'm a happy man.

Hang in there, it can be a slow and painful process, especially the networking.

  4. My bother is getting married this weekend in Fort Collins, CO -- coincidently the same weekend (and location) as the Colorado Brewers' Festival.  Anyone else going?  Tips for a rookie?

Drink lots of Odells, stay away from Ft. Collins Brewery. Not sure who will be there but Liquid Mechanics, Vindication, and Bootstrap are worth checking out.

I have been meaning to check this place out, it just opened:

Other than that, Ft. Collins is a great city that is worth exploring.  If you get a chance, head up to the Mish.  Robert Randolph is playing up there this weekend.  It's an amazing venue up in the mountains.  You can take a bus from Ft. Collins so no issues with driving drunk.  The scenery is amazing.

  5. Hoping someone can explain this to me...

At the Half Acre store (I used to live nearby), you can get a 4-pack of 16 oz cans for $8 or $9. 64oz total. To get the same beer in a growler refill (which is also 64 oz, and now you are providing the container), it's $12.

Why is it 50% more expensive to purchase the same amount of beer when the consumer is providing the container?

It doesn't make much sense, does it? Maybe they're reflecting to cost of having an employee filling a growler by hand (and often dumping a lot of foamy beer down the drain) as opposed to a canning line that is essentially automated and running at high speed?

Good question.  I helped can beer awhile ago and it was very manual with a ton of beer loss.  Constant cans getting jammed, caps not put on right, overfills, underfills, etc... so there has to be far more loss than a growler.  My guess is that it comes down to the fact that there is no competition when filling growlers.  The cans have to sit on a shelf and compete with a ton of other beers for your money so they have to lower the price.  Maybe I'll ask my buddies at the brewery since I'm heading over in 20 minutes.

  6. Rather than start a new thread, this one seems like it will work.  I couldn't find an "audiophile" thread.  Anyways, I'm looking at getting some new Stereo speakers but don't really understand power requirements and things.  Basically I have:

Denon DRA-545R Receiver which looks to have a power rating of 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms

The speakers I was thinking about getting are the B&W 684 S2 (although I'm open to other suggestions) that list for recommended amplifier power as: 25-150 Watt into 8 ohms

This would be just for my turntable, CD player, Cassette, no home theater requirement or anything.

Does anyone in the know see a problem with this set up?

  7. Love reading peoples thoughts on this. I have to say my love of music has not really changed.

I buy more now than I ever did (because i can) and I still get incredibly excited when I find something I love. I look forward to putting the headphones on and listening to something in bed with the lights off as I drift off. What has changed is my emotional connection. I can still be very moved but nothing like when I was Sixteen and I have to assume that is normal. I just don't have the hormones coursing through me like I did then. But as I get older (47) I do find I have a capacity for a deeper kind of feeling in some ways. Maybe it's more cerebral, maybe I'm more in touch and in control of emotions, whatever it is, music is just as gratifying.

  8. Happen to go back to the same Target this morning and they did have have the Sticky Fingers release --- their exclusive is that you buy the CD and send in a code for the vinyl - they send the vinyl to you for free --- the whole thing was $17.99 -- almost pulled the trigger, but didn't. I do plan to buy a turn table with in the next year or so ---- so I really was tempted. But I can wait for Amazon order. Plus I have the record at my p's -- haven't listened to it about 10 years or so - hopefully it is still playable.

Wow. Is that at all Targets? Am I too late? Will be checking tomorrow.

  9. It likely is. It's one of (if not THE) earliest Betty boards that heads got their hands on, which is (imo) a big reason that show is often noted as "the best" show. That show climbed to fame quickly because most of us had never heard that kind of quality. It IS a great show, but there were a lot of great shows that spring/year....

In the last issue of MOJO they mentioned this as an essential recording.  The wording is "Highlighted by the platonic rendition of the ebullient Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain pairing, from the heart of an action-packed and well-practiced tour as equally revered as Europe '72, this never-released show is a cornerstone in any Dead collection."

Not all the clear on what a platonic rendition is exactly...Either way, I'm listening to it now and it does sound pretty damn good.

Next up for me is 9/11/74, or as MOJO put it "Some of the band's most dizzying on-stage avant-garde improv, the middle of three sets contains an extended jam with collaborator Ned Lagin on E-mu synth and Fender Rhodes that dissolves beautifully into a pair of Garcia's heaviest set-pieces, Eyes of the World and Wharf Rat, followed by a long laugh by Jerry."
