  1. For anyone who is wondering about that asterisk* in the link, and I know it's a pain to cut-and-paste instead of just linking: we earn $1.68 per each calendar sold. But when you use the address with the asterisk, we get an additional $3.14. We're not going to fund the site through these calendars alone, but trust me, we'll get a lot closer if you use the asterisk! *** http://www.zazzle.com/viachicagostore* ***
  2. Thanks for the reminder, I forgot to buy mine.
  3. The 2010 calendar! http://www.zazzle.com/via_chicago_2010_calendar-158172879136688581
  4. OK, folks, the long-awaited (ha!) calendar is here! The photographs are amazing, the design skills, slightly less so. Again, I'd love to see this as the first in a series, so keep that in mind, all you folks who'd like to contribute next year. Buy it here! Actually, wait. First go here: http://www.zazzle.com/viachicagostore* I'm still not sure how that works, but for some reason, cutting and pasting that link, including the *, gets us more $ from the transaction. Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed to this project! The original idea came from dixiecupdrinker, and was f
  5. Judy, that really wasn't a hint! Although, if you must, I have tiny hands, so put me down for a size small. And I still can't believe that you and Doug scored those hockey tickets! I've been crowing to anyone who will listen about my luge tickets, if I had your hockey tickets, I'd be even nuttier about the whole thing than I already am. Which seems impossible, but I'd like to be given the opportunity to test that...
  6. OK, design-oriented folks, currently I've got the title in the top right corner of the cover, right-justified, on two lines: Enjoy 2010 on Via Chicago's Terms It fits nicely with the picture on there, so I think that'll work. And, I like that that format puts "Via Chicago" in the prominent spot. But, would it look better as: Enjoy 2010 on VC's Terms Or, any other suggestions for how to do that? I'm not really sure about which is the best place to split that line.
  7. FYI, this thing is 86% done. I'm just waiting for a couple more high-res pics from our talented contributors.
  8. Sarah, we've already got a batch for this year's calendar. Hold on to these for next year, though!
  9. Oh, I don't think she's got anything that insider. If that's the same movie I'm thinking of, I believe ms yvon was a production assistant or some such. We can send out a bat-signal and see if she pops in here. I've heard David Spade speak in interviews about his relationship with Chris Farley, and all his stories basically come down to: he was a great guy, but every single thing he did, every choice he made, was a huge red flag. The way he ate, the way he partied, whatever, you couldn't help but look at him and think, that guy is trying to kill himself. Very sad.
  10. Tweedy's set is one of the early ones in an event that lasts 24 hours, so I think some of the people who will eventually be posting pictures of this are still there.
  11. If I'm not mistaken, a certain showbiz-savvy VCer has some insider knowledge about the making of that movie.
  12. Also: the red mittens are back-ordered on the website. Can you set aside a pair for me when the next shipment comes in?
  13. Ooh, very exciting! Is that a full-time job? I imagine they must have had a staff in place for years now. Our tickets arrived in the mail yesterday, so it's feeling a lot more real to me now.
  14. Last summer, my mom and sisters in I were in Mendocino for a few days, and my mom couldn't take the quaintness of it all, so we drove to a crappy nearby town to find a supermarket and buy trashy magazines. The woman at the check-out counter said to us, as she scanned our stuff: "Michael Jackson died. And Farrah Fawcett. I haven't been telling everybody that, but since you're buying The Enquirer...".
  15. I barely have the energy to read all the back-and-forths between you two.
  16. I'm still(!) working my way through the one about the fires. It's good stuff, but I've been distracted by fluff. Just finished this (fluff! but a good read, anyway): Next up: (she's one of my absolute favorites, although I generally prefer her short stories to the full-length novels) and (wait for it) This is your last chance, Dave Eggers!
  17. OK, smart ass, you're in charge of next year's calendar! I feel kind of bad about using "Enjoy 2010..." as the title, since I'm not including any beave shots.
  18. I think that that was part of the point that the OP was making, or it's how I understood some of his point, anyway. Not that the videos allow anyone to relive the concert experience (or experience it second-hand, for viewers that weren't there). Part of the interest from an "autoethnography" viewpoint is in what these people have chosen to record, and to post. It's telling us something about our culture that this group of people feels the need to have this public record of their attendance at these events.
  19. OK, I'm getting some bigger versions of pictures back from people, so as soon as I collect those, we're good. I'm really happy with the pictures that are going in to this thing. I'm probably not the best person to be doing the layout/design/whatever (not the most creative person...), but I think the quality of the photography will more than make up for my crappy design skills. Also, if this goes over well, someone who is actually good at that kind of thing can volunteer to put together next year's. Oh, and: anyone have any thoughts on a cool title? If left up to me, it'll probably just
  20. That "gogo" business always freaks me out.
  21. A distant cousin of mine boxed for Ireland at the last Olympics. It definitely makes a difference to have someone specific to root for! He ended up with a bronze, which was fabulous. This was on Saturday Night Live after the 1994 Olympics. Probaby represents the post-Olympics lives of most bronze medal winners, not to mention most biathloners. Winn Wilkins.....Michael McKean .....Nancy Kerrigan John Leland.....Norm MacDonald Jim Hillis.....Rob Schneider Winn Wilkins: Hello! Welcome to "Sports Beat". I'm your host, Winn Wilkins! Well, for two weeks in February, the eyes of the world
  22. So, who else is excited for the Olympics? I'm not particularly a fan of most sports, but I do love stories that run along the lines of "so-and-so is a hero in his homeland of [insert name of tiny, obscure country], where the biathlon [aka "skiing plus shooting"] is a national obsession!". Bonus for me this year: I'm going! It's an easy trip for me, made moreso by the fact that I'm being hosted by one of my favorite VCers. I've got tickets to the doubles luge and women's snowboarding halfpipe competitions (try to contain your jealousy!). The beauty of being a fan of the whole idea of th
  23. Yes, I'm with you on all of that, B (that is exactly the October picture that I picked ). I have no idea how this thing is going to turn out, but I'm kind of figuring on this one as a practice run for future VC calendars. I'm hoping it'll look good, but next year we'll get serious about this earlier on, and make it great.
  24. As always, I'm later than I had hoped to be in getting this put together. New tentative release date: this Wednesday. I'll be spending the next two evenings sorting through pictures, requesting high-res versions from some of you, etc. I'd still like a bit of help from you all, suggestions on which pics you'd like to see in the calendar, for which month, etc. Thanks!
