  1. I still don't understand how this is something for Leno to be complaining about. He made the bone-headed move of agreeing to retire in five years, when there was really no need for him to do that. If he'd said no, NBC could have picked their horse at that point, and either dumped Leno and gone with Conan on the Tonight Show, or told Conan he'd have to wait it out, which would have put them at risk of losing Conan to another network. I still see this as an issue of Jay making a dumb choice, and then after realizing it was dumb, refusing to deal with it gracefully.
  2. If I could step in and address the young'uns in the group : I think I've said this before, but for a whole lot of people (those old enough to remember watching Johnny Carson as host), the idea of the Tonight Show at 11:30(ish) is pretty much carved in stone. I remember a time when it was standard practice to watch the news and stay up through Carson's monologue at least, and decide after that, depending who the guests were, whether or not it was worth staying up to watch the rest of the show. But everyone watched the monologue. It was the ultimate water-cooler show, even when the jokes we
  3. Jay Leno used to be a great guest on Letterman. They should work out some deal where he maybe does a Jaywalking segment twice a week on Conan's show, and he does stand-up and/or is a sit-down guest once a month. Conan keeps his show, and Leno gets to come off as the benevolent elder statesman.
  4. My understanding, from listening to some comedians talk about Leno, is that he is a nice guy and has always been a nice guy, and his work ethic and talent as a comic were greatly respected. However: they were disappointed with the quality of the Tonight Show, during his tenure. But more importantly, to most of them, they were hurt by his decision to not allow guest hosts during his vacations (obviously, guest-hosting the Tonight Show was a great stepping-stone for comedians in the past); and, he doesn't book as many comedians or showcase them in the way that other hosts did (obviously for t
  5. I'm pretty sure the stage show isn't anyone's idea of child-friendly. Have fun, ms y-von!

    TICKED!

Several years ago, I was talking to a guy who had recently been transferred back to a day shift at the factory where he worked, after 10+ years of working nights. I asked him how long it took him to re-adjust to the day-time schedule, and he said "about 20 minutes". He realized, as soon as he got back on days, that he had not been optimally happy/healthy on the night shift. I was always a late sleeper as a kid, would happily sleep well into the afternoon, given the chance. Now that I've been working (for several decades now ), I tend to get up much earlier, even on weekends. For my menta
  7. I agree. I've only bought tickets from them a couple of times now, but it was not a good experience.
  8. I requested Muzzle of Bees! Yeah, that soundcheck was maybe the best Wilco show I've ever been to. And all the kids at that show? Man, that was fun.
  9. I've been reading reviews of her books. She sure covers a range of eras, doesn't she?!? Will definitely have to check some of these out.
  10. Oh, that's right! Do you think they'll still honor that? I've been wanting to go back to Burlington since then, just to go to the museum. I know I missed out. I won't be making it for this tour, but someday, Shelburne, someday...
  11. Oh man, the last show there was so much fun! And I didn't even check out the museum! The soundcheck alone was worth the price of admission...
  12. Pretty sure the last time I bought tickets, there's no password. You just need an account.
  13. That's a fabulous cover! Kate, tell me about this one, I'm intrigued. Oh, and welcome back to the NR thread. You've been missed.
  14. Aw, thanks so much! I just this morning ordered a used copy from Amazon, though. And anyway, I need to get through What Is The What, first. I am interested in both of these! And I still need to go back through the Old Year NR thread, to add a bunch of those to my list...
  15. Oh, and that's my other resolution for this year! I'm pretty committed to borrowing books from the library these days, but I think this one may warrant a purchase. I'm kind of torn between, if I get it from the library, even with renewals I'll still have a deadline to finish (which might help); or, if I buy it, I can take my time and not make myself crazy.
  16. My new year's resolution: pay more attention to the campus and bookstore calendars, and attend more of these events! Yeah, tons of great writers/speakers come through here, too, and I miss far too many of them.
  17. I took a brief holiday detour, and put off what was next on the list for a few quick reads: Now, back to and I've also told my nieces and nephew that I'm going to re-read all the Harry Potters this year, to warm up for the next movie coming out in November. So that's really going to cut into my "real" reading this year.
  18. Hey, congrats! You sound very much like a cousin of mine, who hasn't been able to stop saying "awesome" since he and his wife announced last month that they're expecting. I like that kind of happy news for the holidays.
  19. Hmm. I'll see if that's possible, but I'm not sure. What they really want you to do is get to zazzle through the link with the asterisk, then once you're there, everything you buy (even stuff from other stores, not just viachicagostore items) will pay us the referral bonus. I don't understand that system, but that's the way it works. If anyone can explain it any better, I'd appreciate any help with that...
  20. Oh hey, and you used the asterisk and whatnot. http://www.zazzle.com/viachicagostore* It really adds up! Thanks, everybody!
  21. Got my calendar in the mail last night, and it looks great! Still plenty of time to order before the new year.
  22. I am fine with all of these (some of them I really really love), except for: and I had made it through the entire season so far without even thinking about it. Until now. Damn you, Dude!
  23. I took a couple of pictures this weekend, now that the gifts are all wrapped under the tree. Will post some tonight.
  24. I can see why people would suspect drugs, I thought it might be due to the fact that she was so very thin (anorexics often have heart problems). But remember, our own lovely Natalie died of a virus that attacked her heart after having had the flu. It's not necessarily anything that could have been avoided. She was so cute in Clueless.
