Via Chicago's Top 100 Albums of All Time: Summer 2010 edition
gogo replied to gogo's topic in Someone Else's Song
That's still up in the air. It's going to be either 20, 40, or 50, depending on what people have to say about it, for the next day or so: Also, remember: voting starts tomorrow, but is open for weeks and weeks. Don't worry about sending me anything right away. Once the number is definite, I will make that perfectly clear, in a new post and also by amending the top post in this thread. -
Via Chicago's Top 100 Albums of All Time: Summer 2010 edition

If you look at the list, though, when you get down to the 90s, you've really only got two or three people voting for each of those albums. I think all you're going to to do with more picks is shuffle those bottom-of-the-listers a bit, I don't think it's going to significantly change the top picks. Can someone with a more statistically-astute mind than mine take a look at that, and let me know if I'm interpreting that correctly? I think I'm right on this one, I think we're just going to end up with a lot more albums, but not a lot of change at the top of the list. Again, I think it's more -
Via Chicago's Top 100 Albums of All Time: Summer 2010 edition

The results were in a spreadsheet the last time, and if you look at the full results (click here) you'll see that there were a total of 563 different albums, from 58 people who sent in their top 20s. So yeah, a longer list from each contributor is going to give us more total albums, but is it going to change the Top 100 all that much? I'm not sure that it will. Note that when you get to #100, you're talking about albums that only got votes from 2 or 3 people. I'd much rather see more people contributing, than having a (relatively) small group of people send in longer lists. Also: 100 al -
{{{click here for the Top 100}}} This was a lot of fun a couple of years ago (check out this thread for all the weird rulings, regrets about lists sent in too soon, bitching about each other's lists, etc.). So let's do it again! As posted in the previous thread (because I'm too lazy to come up with new rules): The concept is simple: everyone votes for their favorite 20 50 albums, and then I compile all the votes and come up with VC's Top 100. The rules are: there ain't no rules. No, wait, that's not going to work. OK, the rules are: 1. Polls will open on June 15, and close on July

There's some discussion earlier in the thread about the distinction between "Via Chicago merch" and "Wilco merch". That would be my biggest concern with this idea. VC is not in the business of competing with Wilco for merchandise sales, and we might be tiptoe-ing over that line with an album-themed calendar, or with pictures of the band. edit: I don't have time to look right now, but now I'm thinking that that discussion might not actually be in this thread. But check out the other threads on VC merchandise for sale, it's definitely been discussed in a few places.

I would just like to say to all you folks who didn't get this calendar, I feel very sorry for you. Because while all of the months have great pics, June is particularly awesome. And: Let's put a little more time and thought into this for next year. Start thinking now about any cool shots you might want to contribute for next year's calendar. And, start thinking about volunteering to spearhead the submission/design process! I'm certainly not the best person we have for this job...

I saw her stage show of that. She's great, obviously incredibly likeable, but her story is just so harrowing. And wow, does she look old in person... Yep, so very smart. Love the way he writes. Recently finished: and Political melodrama is entertaining in any century!

In all the areas where I drive regularly (although, I don't drive that often anyway), there is total of one round-about, at a spot where six streets converge at one intersection. People who don't use their turn signal to indicate that they are exiting the round-about automatically go on my list.

We used to ask this question all the time, when my nephew was younger. He came home from kindergarten all pouty one day, because he'd heard a spoiler (his word) about the end of Finding Nemo. When we asked who told him, he said How does a four yeald old know how to use air quotes?

That sounds about right. I'd say I'm definitely healthier and saner at 42 than I was at 32. I know there was a thread on these a while back, but: the whole flaunt/flout thing. Even reputable news sources get this wrong, and it makes me nuts.

And Solitaire was on last week. Lots of good music on that show.

This guy reports that the brewery is denying the association. OK, sure.
-
Yeah, he's got some plausible deniability on the name thing, but... c'mon. Also: after not having had a drink in maybe a year or so, I had two of these last Sunday. I think I'm still hungover.

Meghan posted this on facebook this morning: Her caption: "A lovely spring morning in Vermont. The purple thing on the table is a plastic 12" ruler showing our 10" of snow." I don't know what that does for her walk this weekend.

Oh man, I love that!

Every single one of these made me giggle right out loud. You two are going on my anti-pet peeves list.

Nah, there's a ton of stuff pinned already, and we're always trying to reduce the pinnage-clutter! I'll just give it the occasional bump for now. And I'm hoping some other folks will share their links, too.

Bumping this because a bunch of them are happening this weekend. Thanks to all you folks who've been very generous already!

Woman Who 'Loves Brazil' Has Only Seen Four Square Miles Of It I've been treated very kindly, by good friends and complete strangers alike, in New York City.

Yes, very much agree. Similarly, people around here who post without reading the whole thread. I realize that sometimes VC threads are not user-friendly (), but if the question you're posting has already been asked and answered three times in that thread, you deserve to be mocked. Seriously. Somewhat related: it drives me nuts when I send out an e-mail with attachments and links, pre-emptively addressing every possible question I think could be asked on the topic, and I get a response 30 seconds after sending it, asking me for a piece of information that's very easily accessible in the

I love to hear people who can speak knowledgeably, passionately, and articulately, on whatever subject. I don't care how uninterested I am in the topic going in, if the speaker is good, it's entertaining to me. That kind of thing is always a joy to witness, and something I wish I could do myself. No matter how knowledgeable I might be on a given topic, my public speaking always seems to come across as angry, for some reason.
