  1. In my moderator voice: If you disagree with something that has been posted, please try to post a reasonable explanation of why you disagree. Otherwise, you kind of just sound like a contrarian, rather than someone who is legitimately trying to contribute. If you feel that someone's response to your post is less than reasonable, please ask that person to explain his/her point further, rather than trying to insult that person. If you don't respect the sources that are being quoted, please try to include some citations of your own, from sources that you feel are legitmate and responsible,
  2. Damn, some of you people are hard core. I drink decaf from the coffee bar in the lobby, with non-fat milk and a couple of sweet-n-lows. Although for the past month or so, I've been off coffee entirely, switched to green tea (mostly because I'm trying to consume less milk and sweet-n-low!). Although, I am planning to indulge in a few cups of real, full-caff, during my vacation in a couple of weeks.
  3. This pic makes me all sappy/happy/weepy:
  4. Despite the obvious and obviously terrible devastation, that is part of the reason I like earthquakes. We need something to remind us occasionally that we are not in charge.
  5. OK, then. But, damn you for posting at the same time as me!
  6. But that still doesn't downgrade their status to anything less than protestor, does it? The use of "protestor" seems to imply that these folks were somehow not legitimately protesting the bill, but were in fact something else entirely. Hired thugs? Outside agitators? I don't know what exactly Jules meant by it, but it rubbed me the wrong way, too.

My nieces and nephew are 15, 14, and 12, and we still call them "the babies"!

I also hope you can go, and I'd like to see a picture of your baby, please.
  9. Thanks, Lou. Yeah, you've set me up with some very cool old music before, so I know you know what you're talking about! And we've tried him out on some of those types of re-issues, but for him, this was about (1) his fascination at just being able to do this, technologically, (2) a cool project to fill some days (years later, he still isn't happy being retired!), and (3) the nostalgia factor of being able to listen to exactly what his own grandfather was listening to, all those years ago. So it was definitely an emotionally satisfying thing for him, even if it wasn't the best way to get th
  10. Well, my dad's half-deaf, anyway. All he wants is to be able to listen to his old music through his ipod, while he's on the bus.
  11. My dad's got a ton of old 78s, he's been converting them to digital with a Crosley-USB deal.
  12. I think the fuss would be that once the unions are crushed, then the next step would be to repeal some/all of those worker protections. And then the whole cycle starts all over again.
  13. As opposed to the big wet smooch the business community is getting with the "repeal of unnecessary regulations" thing? Believe me, the way unions are feeling about Obama right now, I don't think they'd describe themselves as "kissed". It'd be a much raunchier verb than that.
  14. Yes, exactly. This is the exact opposite of asking the unions, in good faith, to make concessions. The governor obviously intended to frame this in the most extreme way possible. In case we're taking a poll on this one, I'm with the unions.
  15. You realize that I don't really blame myself, right? Yeah, definitely a disease. A few years ago, we donated dozens of boxes of books, and I still miss them! But for my own mental health, and so I wouldn't turn up on Hoarders someday, it had to be done... We kept the books that we knew we couldn't live without, and for everything else, the library is right there.
  16. From the biography of Henry Ward Beecher I'm reading now: But this is a library book that I'm reading. I blame myself for the downfall of book stores, they seem to be disappearing quickly, since I've given up my Beecher-style book-buying habit and started patronizing the public library on a regular basis.
  17. Huh. I don't remember seeing the previous post, and I searched for "neko" and didn't find this. Everything looks good here, though.
  18. http://www.nekocase.com/auction/index.htm 826 National is raffling off Neko Case's '67 Mercury Cougar, along with some cool signed guitars, an amp, a bunch of Sub Pop vinyl, and some other stuff.
  19. It wasn't my first, but man, that was a good show. Even if we didn't meet you until the next year!
  20. OK, so there are a couple of different things being dicussed here, including: ~ the appropriate level of moderation for a board like VC; ~ whether or not VC is welcoming to new people; ~ why people don't post as much as they used to; ~ what exactly constitutes spam/advertising/street-teaming/whatever; and ~ whether or not spam/advertising/street-teaming is ever acceptable, based on level of Wilco-relatedness, how long the poster has been posting here, and just general overall coolness of the project being promoted (for consistency's sake, generally the answer to this has been "no", o
