  1. From Neutral Milk Hotel's Facebook page:

    * Neutral Milk Hotel * It has now been officially announced (via Wilson at Merge Records) that Jeff Mangum has contributed a track to the U.S. version of the Chris Knox tribute album Stroke. The song, “Sign the Dotted Line,” is a cover of the Tall Dwarfs track.

that's a good song. not as good as 'high rise' though.

if you want the cd now, there are sites in NZ selling it.

  2. You guys have already eliminated everything I've been to other than Brazil.

i've really only traveled in europe, but can strike new zealand off the list.

  3. Mojo has their top 2009 list out. No surprise Animal Collective is #1. Some interesting choices though:

They actually list the top 50 but I can't find them on the website so here is the top 15:

    1. Animal Collective - Merriweather post pavillion

    2. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I wish we were an eagle

    3. Richard Hawley - Truelove's gutter

    4. The Horrors - Primary Colours

    5. Tinariwen - Imidiwan: Companions

    6. Bob Dylan - Together through Life

    7. Florence and the Machine - Lungs

    8. Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport

    9. Madness - The liberty of Norton Folgate

    10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz

    11. The Cribs - Ignore the ignorant

    12. The Low Anthem - Oh my god, Charlie Darwin

    13. Grizzly bear - Veckatimest

    14. Mayer Hawthorne - A strange arrangement

    15. Kasabian - The west rider pauper lunatic asylum

Something tells me this is quite a bit different than what Rolling Stone will pick.

My list shares exactly one choice w/ Mojo's, and it's at the same position (#2).

  4. thanks for your posts in here, tp. Did you write that article?

    i did, thanks.

Unfortunately, as is too often the case, I appear to have discovered a compelling artist only after hearing about his/her death. Anyone who is a fan of droney acoustic guitars and who doesnt know Jack Rose should check him out. What I have heard so far is pretty great.

if you want a more traditional sound, the new record from this year w/ the Black Twig Pickers is a good place to start. I think that _Kensington Blues_ is his best, and VHF had reissued it on LP last year so copies are still likely around. or grab a cd if that's your thing.

    my dinner the other night.

bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin = :dancing :cheers

i use a bobby flay recipe that tastes great (roasted garlic, chopped herbs, bacon, pork).

i rarely leave the music-related forums and just found this thread. good stuff. i'll be sure to make this a regular stop.

  6. just got back from dinner to find out about this fucking horrible event. truly gutted; Jack was a phenomenal guitar player, and truly a nice a guy as well. i feel fortunate to have met him a bunch of times, but am really sad that i won't hear him play ever again.

  7. i finally got around to watching the copy i bought on Record Store Day (yeah, i have a bit of a backlog...)

anyway, I really enjoyed it. i thought that Canty's camera work and angles worked well, the sound was great, and the versions/songs they did were uniformly excellent (though i guess i could have done w/o the "kingpin" raveup).

they didn't do all that much off-stage/interview stuff, but there was enough of it for me. the pacing was good too and the opening soundcheck scene was brilliant. glad to see 'theologians' tacked onto the extras. love that song.

  8. I agree - some people can tell the difference in sound. This is particularity noticeable depending on the bit rate, and what was used to rip/create the Mp3 files. I think the bit rate of Amazon's Mp3 files are 256. I don't know how they get the files though. I suppose that is nice that they offer such files for a low price, but I am still not willing to pay for Mp3 files. I don't mess with Mp3 files unless it is the only way I can get a song, or album (usually something that is out of print, found on a blog somewhere). It would be nice if they sold FLAC files. I suppose that may happen someday.

Matador does sell FLAC files. i'm sure other labels will catch on to that as well.

  9. never leave a Calexico gig early...they typically invite the opener on stage for a big blowout of a cover song. w/ the Acorn they played 'crosseyed and painless' and it ruled.

i do agree that the last couple of records have not been too strong.

  10. Interesting that you say the sound was great. There is whole thread over here on Bostonist about how bad the sound was. It even links to the ProSoundWeb message board where a guy who appears to be the Feelies' sound guy complains about the venue.

funny, i didn't realize that Andy was doing sound for The Feelies. he's a member on a long-time listserv mailing list that i've been on for quite some time as well. it was kinda neat to get a technical insight into this sort of situation.

Our road manager told me that when he was in the venue with Mogwai, Live Nation contracted to have stuff brought in and it was "acceptable."

i was wondering about that...i thought the mogwai sound was pretty decent, though i went back from the front of the stage to about ~15' back for the latter third, and the sound improved substantially.

louieb, thanks for the info on Neko...i don't own any of the early material, but have a recording of that Peel session she did w/ Calexico.
