  1. Swervedriver.

    Raise

    Mezcal Head

    Ejection Seat Reservation

    99th Dream

all great records, and they show a natural progression that was thwarted by record business bullshit. they shoulda been huge.

of the other Creation Records bands, I'd toss Slowdive out there too...not seriously as the greatest band of the decade, but they were a significant one nonetheless.

Hitchcock's '90s material was ok but certainly not up to his '80s work.

Another fantastic band that totally deserves consideration is Thinking Fellers Union Local 282...they are not a band w/ a lot of overlap for typical Wilco fans but holy damn what a band. one of the last originals, i'd reckon. they took some parts from Beefheart and the Residents but for the most part chartered new waters.

  2. it's certainly not MBV..._loveless_ came out in '90 i believe, and while it's a great record you've got to have more than one to be considered the best band.

    some others I would consider:

    Melvins

    Guided By Voices

Sonic Youth (though i do love their SST recordings)

    Yo La Tengo

    Hood

    Nick Cave

    The Jesus Lizard

    Tar

    Sebadoh

    Grifters

    Sun City Girls

  3. For me the most annoying thing in regards to camera phones are that people feel the need to take 10 or more pictures of themselves at the freaking concert. This is what the drunk girl in the front of our section was doing. Between her and her date they had to have gotten 20-25 pictures of themselves: holding up a beer, standing with arms up in the air, hugging a friend, smiling with stage in background, dancing individually, dancing as a couple...Honestly, nobody, gives a shit that you attended the Wilco concert and did theses things.

    Welcome to the Flickr/Twitter/Facebook times.

  4. back before i started shooting shows seriously, i almost never took a camera to a gig...i can only recall bringing my wife's cheap film camera to a couple (Zeni Geva, Gas Huffer, maybe one or two other ones).

the first time i saw Wilco we scalped front row seats @ Boston's Orpheum Theatre, and i was gonna bring my little film canon elph. security found it in my pocket during a frisk, and wouldn't let me in with it. this was 2002. i had to tell the guy i was gonna hide the battery outside, since i took public transit and had no place to stash the camera in a safe place.

    he let me in.

of course, i had the battery w/ me, but didn't put it in and take any photos, even though i was close enough to untie Jeff's shoelaces.

  5. I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak for saying this, but after the number of shows that Wilco has played over the years and the number of both good and bad things that it has experienced, I'm still amazed that Jeff Tweedy still lets the small, petty things like people holding up their cell phones bother him so much to the point where he arguably crosses the line.

maybe he'll adopt Hope Sandoval's policy:

  6. Kurt Vile put out two great records in '09, first _God Is Saying This To You_ and then the just-released _Childish Prodigy_.

I really like what this guy is doing.

other '09 records i really like include Polvo's _In Prism_ and Dinosaur Jr's _Farm_.

  7. well it's too late to do a mail order rental, and i don't live anywhere near there so i can't help you out.

however, in the future i'd highly recommend www.lensprotogo.com as they have a great inventory and really good pricing as well. i've rented a bunch of times from them and have always been more than happy.
