  1. Aerosmith had one really good song a while back but I can't think what it is right now.

i guess it comes down to yr particular appetite for hard rock, but they had a string of records to be proud of.

    dream on

    draw the line

    lord of the thighs

    seasons of wither

    no more no more

    lick and a promise

    sweet emotion

some good stuff there for sure.

While it is far from dead, I think the CD has taken a bit of a hit recently. I tend to subscribe to solace's purchasing plan - Spend a few extra bucks for the vinyl and download the free digital files. Or be Google savvy if they aren't included with the purchase of the vinyl.

this is my thinking, but then i take it one step further...just get the download.

drag city stuff isn't available anywhere. i wish it was at least on itunes.

what about emusic? i find it strange that Koretzky doesn't sell via iTunes.

drag city is a kickass label though...so many good bands and records...

  3. As long as there is a physical object to buy that provides the music at optimal quality, I will continue to buy that object rather than go to a purchased-download model. To date, I have never bought a single digital download.

    But I'm weird.

I might start buying downloads at some point in the future, but only if they're lossless ... at which point I'd probably buy whole albums only, and then burn them to CDs anyway.

i have bought one digital-only download, a 4 song EP from a british folk outfit (Sand Snowman). other than that, it's physical artifacts all the way.

over the last 18 months, for new purchases i've bought 80% LPs, 20% cds.

  4. Ha. I can't believe I'm not the only person around here who saw that.

Fun fact: Glenn's arms-aloft pose before ITMWLY was originally billed as a Todd Trainer tribute. No word on whether Todd's greyhound can do rock poses.

and don't forget their last record:

btw, this place makes some look-alikes (Buzzo has been playing one for the past year, as have the guys in Torche).

  5. Well if Shrimp Boat is in there, how about the Coctails box set and also the Tortoise Box set. Actually the Tortoise set was one of the best things they ever did. Also there is a Birmingham sound vol 2. (Do any of the Numero Group sets count, if so they are the best of the lot.)

Aren't the Miles sets reissues? I suppose not since they are the original sessions without being cut up.

the Tortoise box is very good (and cheap!) but it's mostly released material.

  6. big shows are tightly orchestrated in terms of start and stop times because of things like a hard curfew...venues pay sizable fines for overstepping these limits.

club shows still have this this sort of environment though.

i was at a show last night that the band didn't get on until 11:15 or so. yeah it was later than i'd have liked, and i have a 30 mile trip back home afterwards, but it won't kill me. that said, i don't get up at 5. more like 7.

  7. i got a laugh out of this, as i have no idea who this guy is:

I actually consider myself an independent star in my own right

he's completely off the radar here:

One is that I saw Jeff hugging Dan Koretzky, head of Drag City records and my archenemy in Chicago.

Dan is symbolic of everything that's wrong with Chicago IMHO

Drag City is easily one of the best labels ever. if that's what's wrong w/ Chicago, please pray for more fuckups.

i just most of that rambling screed. what a waste of time.

  8. I've never heard Xanakis. What would a good starting point be?

If you're into drone and haven't checked out the Lamonte Young and Marian Zazeela album called

Dream House 78'17"you should give it a try.The track "Drift Study" is amazing.

It's about fourty minutes and is all sine tones.

oh, Xenakis is a guy name-checked by electronic/avant hipsters...i have this one (it's been a while since i listened to it):

    http://www.discogs.com/Iannis-Xenakis-Electronic-Music/release/154491

i have two Young 2CD sets (the ones that are in purple). some german-based title, i think?

holy damn who would buy this?

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000009HZ9/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1256929640&sr=8-1&condition=used

are you familiar w/ Natural Snow Buildings? they do some really nice earthy/folky drone stuff...the new _Shadow Kingdom_ is excellent.

    other good drone:

    Surface of the Earth (NZ)

Experimental Audio Research (sonic boom of spacemen 3)

  9. 'psychedelic rock' is the most abused tag ever applied to music...so much so that it's almost meaningless. however, i will trot out a few of my favorite records which could either induce a different state, or sound really good while under the influence of something psychoactive...

    Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun

    Butthole Surfers - Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac

    Charalambides - Historic 6th Ward

    Dungen - Ta Det Lungt

Flying Saucer Attack - Rural Psychedelia

Sun Dial - Other Way Out

    Espers - Espers II

Comets on Fire - Blue Cathedral

    Religious Knives - Resin

Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription

    Abunai - Round Wound

    Bardo Pond - Amanita

    Dead Meadow - Feathers

    Annexus Quam - Osmose

Marble Sheep - The Gate of a Heavenly Body

    Morgen - self-titled

    German Oak - self-titled

Sunburned hand of the man - Manhunt in D

The Wellwater Conspiracy - Brotherhood of Electric: Operational Directives

there's a ton of great krautrock which could qualify as 'psychedelic' too (i listed a couple).

  10. OK, so that makes at least 11 songs in their catalog with parentheses. How many albums do they have? No band should have more than one parenthetical song title per album.

    12 full-lengths. they just qualify. :D

    oops, not anymore:

Jets Part 2 (My Two Days As An Ambulance Driver)

    Bad Days (Aurally Excited Version)

How Will We Know? (Futuristic Crashendos)

Riding To Work In The Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now)

  11.

The Flaming Lips take it to the extreme:

    • The Spark That Bled (The Softest Bullet Ever Shot)
    • Waitin' for a Superman (Is It Gettin' Heavy?)
    • What Is the Light? (An Untested Hypothesis Suggesting That the Chemical (In Our Brains) by Which We Are Able to Experience the Sensation of Being in Love Is the Same Chemical That Caused the "Big Bang" That Was the Birth of the Accelerating Universe)
    • Suddenly Everything Has Changed (Death Anxiety Caused by Moments of Boredom) – 3:54
    • The Gash (Battle Hymn for the Wounded Mathematician)
    • Sleeping on the Roof (excerpt from "Should We Keep the Severed Head Awake??")
    • Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)

    more Lips:

Gingerale Afternoon (The Astrology of a Saturday)

Talkin' 'Bout The Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants To Live Forever)

You Have To Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain)

Jets (Cupid's Kiss vs the Psyche of Death)
