I saw about 15 minutes of a Six Organs show a few years ago and it was awesome. I've been meaning to check out some recordings, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
i really like _Shelter from the Ash_ a lot, and _Dark Noontide_ as well. _Songs For Octavio Paz_ is pretty mellow, but good.
What are Tyst Minut and Samtidigt? I have all of Dungen's main releases (aside from the self titled one), but I'm not familiar with those.they are 12" records; the Tyst Minut came as a bonus CD on the _Tat De Lugnt_ cd reissue. not sure if _Samtidigt_ has been reissued...it originally came out on Mexican Summer which is an off-shoot of Kemado and has put out some fine fine records, including ones from Kurt Vile and Wooden Shjips.

I hate to admit it, but I would have a very hard time naming ten artists from this decade that I listen to regularly.
having said that, I nominate Dungen.
i am still waiting to see them play live...it just hasn't worked out the last couple of dates they've played boston (was out of town, and the 2nd time the show sold out and i couldn't get in).

I had The National and Wilco in my mind, but just because DtS put out the relative clunker BAAC, it hardly detracts from the greatness of SRO, TDS and DD.
likewise, Neko's only got two records which i consider stunners, and they are the last two.
Wilco was a tough one, but ultimately they didn't make the cut. another attempt could yield a different list. i'd say the only true locks on the list would be Mogwai and Boris.

seeing Cortez' list makes me realize that both Drive-By Truckers and Jason Molina belong.
but who to chop off?

i've only typed 9, as i know i'm likely missing an obvious one, which i'll fill in later. i've also noticed that my list is quite rockist, but that's what i mainly listen to.
* all photos taken by me except Electric Wizard and Dungen

Duane Denison, anyone?
pretty much forged his own style.
i can never tire of 'monkey trick'
-
when i saw Roger Daltrey last week he mentioned the Tea Party.
-
Even though I like a lot of their catalog, after seeing them live and hearing their most recent stuff, I can't help but question if Wayne Coyne is a true artist or a complete wannabee, talentless loser who just got lucky (a fluke?) with one great album (SB) and a couple decent, but overrated ones (Yoshimi, Transmissions, Clouds). Everyday, my opinion strays towards the latter.
the new one is really good. i didn't care for any post-SB material, really.
however, he has turned the live show into a cul de sac that he can't exit.

Super Furry Animals are the absolute best band making music today, and should be considered among the very very best of all time.
if they hadn't started going seriously downhill since _Love Kraft_ i might back you. plus, the live show in '05 was great but they were the WORST act at ATP/NY this year...really disappointing to me.
-
I also tried the GBV thing and remain completely unmoved.
what songs did you listen to? i find it hard to believe that a general fan of ROCK MUSIC could not be moved by some Pollardian creations
Drive By Truckers has never written a good song.
WRONG - see 'decoration day' or 'where the devil don't stay' or 'let there be rock' for more information
Guided By Voices > Beatles. Really.
you are correct
Hair Metal > Grunge.
WRONG - make a ~5 song EP of crap from Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, Ratt and Skid Row and I'll counter w/ a mix from Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, Seaweed, TAD and Love Battery

Where the hell is 'The J Giels Band - Live Full House'? Best live album ever.
no, the best live LP ever made (and one not listed in this top 100) is BOC's _On Your Feet Or On Your Knees_.
-
I've never understood this contradiction in traditional supply and demand economics. Cd sales are cut in half in less than a decade, but the price stays the same?
well how about the fact that, unlike books, the MSRP for any cd is typically the same (not counting 'nice price' stuff).

Vampire Weekend may have released the greatest debut album in the history of Rock.
and you are complaining about needing a pillow for MMJ?

Highway Star proves that whoever wrote Deep Purple's lyrics has an IQ below 80.
John Fogerty was treated worse than any other major white musician. Either that or he's just really oversensitive.
I've tried and just can't get into Television.
Big Star, what's the Big deal.
Eddie Vedder is the worst singer in the history of rock music. He wouldn't be worthy to clean Kurt's grungy toenails.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash destroyed the hippie dream. (well, maybe)
Little Feat and The Band, no matter how many cult followers, will always be underappreciated.
Nick Drake had more ability in his little finger than 99.9999% of all musicians who will ever roam the earth.
Vinyl will outlast CD.
this post is gold

for me it'd be REM, mainly because i probably listened to them more in college than all the other bands combined. 2nd place would be CVB; didn't get into husker and SY until late college or after college. the Femmes i was listening to in high school.

Top 5ive Awesome Aerosmith Songs:

atlanta has a few.
Criminal Records is a great store. i checked it out a bit when they did the 3 band in-store before Scion Rock Fest...totally dug it.
The weird thing that i can't figure out, and it's sort of proved by this thread, is that everyone seems to agree that the traditional record store is gone, and that it is missed. And yet, they've all closed. Is it because the Tower Records of the world ran the good ones out of business and (basically) sucked major ass? So then they went out of business? Is there a market for a really good record store? And if I opened one, could I support my family?
for me, it's because mail order is so much easier...i live ~30 miles from the stores now, and browsing the racks is something i only get to a few times a year.

i saw Wolf get there late...he was up in that little side balcony, stage-left. bill janowitz was there too.
i did notice the blank marquee outside but didn't think anything of it.
-
Yup - she was pretty pissed off. One of the guys I went with knows Joey and we talked with him after the show but, as you noted, he didn't know anything. He said there was a band meeting to work something out but since he and John aren't part of the band they weren't included.
I thought it was a great show. I never get tired of her voice.
Did you take pictures?
i'll be doing a writeup w/ some photos, but i was only approved to take shots of Calexico, and not Neko.
-
Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling
Neil Young - On The Beach
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Tar - Over and Out

I saw the Neko Case show in Boston last night. Between the opening band (John and Joey from Calexico) and Neko's set, the theater played Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It got all the way to Poor Places before Neko came on.
i was showing up in this thread to make the same post.
man, Neko was fired up about the promoter. i tried to do some sleuthing to find out the root of the matter but my source told me that joey and john didn't know what it was.
good show though!

Josh Groban should honor Neil Young by staying home
and take Dave Mathews w/ him.
how is Howe Gelb not invited? J Mascis? screw that lineup. i wanna make my own show.
-
I really enjoyed this show on Sunday...I'd seen the Who a couple of times (1st 'farewell tour' at Shea in '82 w/ the Clash, and then again in Foxboro in '90 or so) and have always been a fan. Seeing Roger having so much fun doing whatever he wanted to was a blast.
What music have you purchased this year?
in Someone Else's Song
Posted
i won't be able to go w/ a month-by-month rundown...i probably bought 150LPs and 30-40 cds. that's just a wild guess.
