i've only typed 9, as i know i'm likely missing an obvious one, which i'll fill in later. i've also noticed that my list is quite rockist, but that's what i mainly listen to.

    * all photos taken by me except Electric Wizard and Dungen

  2. Even though I like a lot of their catalog, after seeing them live and hearing their most recent stuff, I can't help but question if Wayne Coyne is a true artist or a complete wannabee, talentless loser who just got lucky (a fluke?) with one great album (SB) and a couple decent, but overrated ones (Yoshimi, Transmissions, Clouds). Everyday, my opinion strays towards the latter.

the new one is really good. i didn't care for any post-SB material, really.

however, he has turned the live show into a cul de sac that he can't exit.

  3. I also tried the GBV thing and remain completely unmoved.

what songs did you listen to? i find it hard to believe that a general fan of ROCK MUSIC could not be moved by some Pollardian creations

Drive By Truckers has never written a good song.

WRONG - see 'decoration day' or 'where the devil don't stay' or 'let there be rock' for more information

Guided By Voices > Beatles. Really.

    you are correct

    Hair Metal > Grunge.

WRONG - make a ~5 song EP of crap from Poison, Motley Crue, Warrant, Ratt and Skid Row and I'll counter w/ a mix from Afghan Whigs, Mudhoney, Seaweed, TAD and Love Battery

  4. I've never understood this contradiction in traditional supply and demand economics. Cd sales are cut in half in less than a decade, but the price stays the same?

well how about the fact that, unlike books, the MSRP for any cd is typically the same (not counting 'nice price' stuff).

  5. Highway Star proves that whoever wrote Deep Purple's lyrics has an IQ below 80.

John Fogerty was treated worse than any other major white musician. Either that or he's just really oversensitive.

I've tried and just can't get into Television.

Big Star, what's the Big deal.

Eddie Vedder is the worst singer in the history of rock music. He wouldn't be worthy to clean Kurt's grungy toenails.

Crosby, Stills, and Nash destroyed the hippie dream. (well, maybe)

Little Feat and The Band, no matter how many cult followers, will always be underappreciated.

Nick Drake had more ability in his little finger than 99.9999% of all musicians who will ever roam the earth.

    Vinyl will outlast CD.

    this post is gold :D

  6. atlanta has a few.

Criminal Records is a great store. i checked it out a bit when they did the 3 band in-store before Scion Rock Fest...totally dug it.

The weird thing that i can't figure out, and it's sort of proved by this thread, is that everyone seems to agree that the traditional record store is gone, and that it is missed. And yet, they've all closed. Is it because the Tower Records of the world ran the good ones out of business and (basically) sucked major ass? So then they went out of business? Is there a market for a really good record store? And if I opened one, could I support my family? :)

for me, it's because mail order is so much easier...i live ~30 miles from the stores now, and browsing the racks is something i only get to a few times a year.

  7. Yup - she was pretty pissed off. One of the guys I went with knows Joey and we talked with him after the show but, as you noted, he didn't know anything. He said there was a band meeting to work something out but since he and John aren't part of the band they weren't included.

I thought it was a great show. I never get tired of her voice.

    Did you take pictures?

i'll be doing a writeup w/ some photos, but i was only approved to take shots of Calexico, and not Neko. :(

  8. I saw the Neko Case show in Boston last night. Between the opening band (John and Joey from Calexico) and Neko's set, the theater played Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It got all the way to Poor Places before Neko came on.

i was showing up in this thread to make the same post. :D

man, Neko was fired up about the promoter. i tried to do some sleuthing to find out the root of the matter but my source told me that joey and john didn't know what it was.

    good show though!

  9. Neko Case - People Gotta Lot Of Nerve

    Polvo - Lucia

    Dinosaur Jr - Pieces

    Kurt Vile - Blackberry Song

Om - Cremation Ghat (pts 1 and 2)

    Baroness - Swollen and Halo

Bill Callahan - All Thoughts Are Prey To Some Beast [this is the best song i've heard all year]

    Boston Spaceships - Radical Amazement

Death - Politicians In Their Eyes

Harvestman - By Wind and Sun

    Kylesa - Unknown Awareness

Papercuts - Once We Walked In The Sunlight

The Reigning Sound - The Bells

Sonic Youth - Massage The History

Super Furry Animals - White Socks/Flip-flops

The Flaming Lips - Convinced of the Hex

    The Mary Onettes - Dare

The Soundtrack of our Lives - Second Life Replay

    The Veils - The Letter

  10. Not through iTunes, not through emusic, and no mp3 downloads with the LP. Since I buy most of my new stuff on vinyl, if I want digital versions of these songs, I have to go out and buy another copy of the album on CD. It says a lot about Drag City and the quality of their artists that I am willing to do that (even on occasion). But it is pretty annoying. I would probably be boycotting any other label for this. :lol

i bought a copy of the Chijimi 10" from Bonnie Prince Billy and it came w/ a download coupon for _Beware_. but not the songs from the record i bought.

of course, it was $20 for that 10".
