This news is most unfortunate. I hereby resign my commission in the Wilco Army.
i do not like the Dead.
i very much like Wilco.

And whoever wrote that review should know that they would not be playing Ozzy era songs even if there was not some lawsuit going on. They use to, of course, but Dio is not very fond of Ozzy, and I think it sounds wrong when he sings Paranoid or whatever anyhow.
Some examples of Dio doing Ozzy era songs can be found on the album Live Evil (1982).
I will give the guy props for knowing that Vinny did not play the drums on the Heaven and Hell album (it was Bill Ward).
i wrote the review, too.
no, i certainly knew going in that there would not be any Ozzy material played, and i thought i'd made that point clear w/ the analogy of the recent Stooges reunions only playing material from the records that Asheton played guitar on.

Thanks! someone called them the Hands of Doom, and i think it's accurate. that photo is currently my wallpaper for my pc...think i'll get a decent print of both shots.
more shots of all the bands can be found here:

not sure how much overlap there is between Wilco's fanbase and some of the louder music forms, but if you are interested i caught a couple of very cool shows over the last 10 days or so.

you must own:
The Lioness
Trials and Errors
Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma

wow, Wilco's playing Vicar St? that's a pretty cozy venue to see them. when i lived in ireland i saw Echo/Bunnymen, Calexico, and The Go-Betweens there. i didn't get tickets to any of the three sold-out Nick Cave solo shows...no tickets to be had out front from scalpers either.

That was the mellowest I've ever seen Chan Marshall. She barely said a word, she just dance and sang the whole time. Last time I saw her she hardly finished a song and told a bunch of crazy stories.
Chrissie Hynde still has the same voice she did on the classic records. Very cool.
yeah, she's gotten over her tendency to meltdown at shows, but this karaoke act has gotten a bit stale. agreed that Hynde sounded great, though i think her vibrato was helped out a bit artificially...
Really great photos!!!
What type of gear did you use?thanks! canon bodies and lenses.

very fun show...LOUDquietLOUD sorta evening, w/ Chan Marshall still plying her dusky soul sound and breaking up the volume output.

Ali was a total badass drummer. played w/ tons of great combos. a monolith for sure.

I can't imagine these are flying off the shelves.
I wonder how in the world is that even legal? It seems like overt piracy to me.

i can't see how it's legal, even w/ this flimsy qualifier
To legally obtain this CD, you must also purchase the vinyl record, or already own it. -

Also, PLEASE check out Live Seeds.
Has ferocious versions of a lot of his best tracks.
And, if you want to get tangential with Nick stuff... you need to go back into his catalog and hear the old stuff he did with The Birthday Party.
And then, you need to hear the solo stuff from his old bass player.
yeah, if you like the Jesus Lizard you will definitely hear where they got some of their ideas from (The Birthday Party)...also, for a bit more difficult listen, you can check out Blixa's band Einsturzende Neubaten.
and 2007's solo record from original seed Mick Harvey is also quite good.

I picked up Nocturama, because I really dug the track "Bring it On", especially after seeing it on Letterman.
But the rest of the album left much to be desired. Maybe it's due for another listen...
i would point out these records:
the boatman's call
let love in
henry's dream
murder ballads

RTI is a very good pressing plant.
Matador uses them. I've been happy, though the Mogwai record (Hawk is Howling) was a bit noisier than i expected.
i think the Wilco records sound amazing on vinyl. really well done.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Great shots. I remember the ones you took last year at Tanglewood. I think I bookmarked those. I'll do the same with these. Did you go to the second show on Thursday?
Thanks! Nope, I didn't go last night. Also, you might have confused me w/ someone else as I wasn't @ the Tanglewood show last year...last two shows I've shot Wilco was the LeLacheur Park in Lowell, and when they opened for Neil Young last Dec.

after a 6:30 start by MGMT who provided the crowd with commercial jingles. Kind of disappointing. Never really heard them before but Paul could have done with a better opening act.
screw those guys. i was the only photographer approved to shoot them as well, but they presented me w/ a photo waiver that transferred copyright to them, allowing them to use the photos in any manner they wanted w/o paying me one red cent. they wouldn't amend it either. no thanks.
and musicians complain about people illegally downloading their music...

Jim and John got a good shot of Paul when he first got on stage...I was still dicking around w/ my gear and was caught by surprise and missed it. we were all camped *way* back from the stage so everyone had the same perspective, shooting-wise.

A music legend in one of the most historic buildings baseball has to offer. perfect weather, too - the thunderstorms never appeared.
i only got to shoot 2 songs and then i got the bumrush out under the centerfield bleachers, but it was a cool experience. i hung outside for a bit to hear some more.

Just picked up tickets to go see Joe Pernice on Wednesday night.
He is doing a solo tour where he both plays songs from his new album (which comes out tomorrow) and reads from his novel (which comes out Thursday).
i'll be @ the 2nd show, unless i find some cheap ticket for mccartney after i'm done shooting the 1st two songs.

1. First Concert, when?
The Outlaws and Molly Hatchet... i was in jr high school and went w/ my brother...must have been around '79 or so.
2. First Concert you really wanted to go to and did?
probably the same answer as #1. or maybe Cheap Trick on the _Dream Police_ tour.
3. Favorite Band?
not possible to answer.
4. How Many Times have you seen them?
most times i've ever seen one individual band is either Neil Young, Sonic Youth, or Yo La Tengo...about a dozen or so times.
5. Worst concert you attended?
Soul Asylum and Agitpop @ Hampshire College...my friends and i were tripping our asses off and it was just a bad scene overall...we left before Agitpop ended.
6. Favorite?
not possible to answer definitively, but here are some contenders among many:
Mark Burgess last week
The Who/The Clash
the Jesus Lizard on the Goat tour
Verlaines, both times
Sun City Girls/Thinking Fellers Union Local 282
Neil Young+Crazy Horse, '86 or so
The Jazz Butcher/Blue Aeroplanes, '91 or so
Mudhoney/Superchunk
Urge Overkill/Tar/Unsane
Sonic Youth ('89 before _Goo_ came out, and the proper _Goo_ tour)
7. Band you have seen the most?
see #4
8. How many times?
see #4
9. Furthest you drove for a concert? How far?
i've driven down to NYC for a few shows...it's about a 4 hr drive. The Who/The Clash @ Shea, Giant Sand, Thee Headcoats, and most recently Throbbing Gristle
10. Furthest locale from home you have seen a concert?
i saw Brown Velvet Couch, Gate, and Alastair Galbraith @ the Empire in Dunedin NZ. it's the furthest i've ever been from home period.
11. How many concerts have you seen?
hundreds.
12. most you ever paid for a concert ticket?
$150 for Neil Young @ the Orpheum in late '07. taking into account inflation, the $125 i paid for front row tickets to Wilco in '02, and $60 in '82 for the Who/Clash show might also qualify.
13. Least amount of people at a concert by a major labeled artist.
are the Datsuns still on a major label? most of the club left after Future of the Left played last weekend.
14. Band you want to see the most who you haven't seen?
Wipers
Savage Republic
Einsturzende Neubaten
Current 93
15. Ever been backstage, on a tourbus..which?
not much of a scenester but i have been backstage w/ Har Mar Superstar drinking beers, and did a pre-gig shoot w/ Psychic TV backstage.
16. Longest show by one artist you ever saw?
not sure...probably either The Who, The Cure, or U2. i don't see many stadium or arena shows, and club shows don't tend to go over 2 hr for a given performer.
17. Shortest show by a headliner?
Blues Control last weekend...they played for 15 minutes before hitting a hard curfew and were shut down. poor set time management.
some ancillary questions which could be added:
18. Have you ever been at a show which has been recorded and released?
The Melvins - Pick Your Battles
No-Neck Blues Band - The Birth of Both Worlds
19. What's the biggest band you saw in the smallest club?
Smashing Pumpkins @ TT the Bears (~250 ppl capacity club), pre-Gish
Pavement @ the Middle East upstairs (~190 ppl capacity), pre-S&E
Phish @ the Paradise (~500 ppl) in '89 i think. they rented the club themselves.
20. Bands you wanted to see but for whatever reason didn't/couldn't
Elvis Costello @ the Springfield Civic Center, '83 or so (show canceled due to poor ticket sales; The Police played Hartford CC the same night)
Bruce Springsteen in Saratoga (parents wouldn't let me go since it was my step-sister's high school graduation)
Spacemen 3 @ The Rat, '89 (they were denied work visas due to prior drug offenses and broke up before ever playing the US)

with pop punkish flare
and you lost me right there
gave proof through the night
Billie Joe has MILF hair
brilliant.
 -

not trying to be contentious, but the Buzzcocks were a better band than the Beatles, at least to me.
 -

i saw them on the _only life_ tour in the early 90s, and then last year...they still sounded fantastic. i'm gonna catch their show @ ATP when they play the 1st record.

ATP/NY - best weekend of the year
in After The Show
Posted
once again the organizers of All Tomorrow's Parties put on one hell of an event in a dingy, overlooked corner of the Catskills. 3 days of entertainment overload centered around bands, but including comedians, live improvisation, trivia games, cult film screenings, performances of complete, specific recordings, live interviews with King Buzzo and Jon Spencer, a poker table helmed by Big Black/Shellac leader Steve Albini...the list goes on and on...incredible weekend. nirvana for music geeks, basically.
Here are my thoughts about the whole thing, links to a review and photo gallery from each day.
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Nick Cave
Bob Mould with No Age
eye of Boredoms
