  1. (7) marc ribot (solo, trio, cubanos postizos, electric masada w/ zorn)

    insanely jealous.

    :worship

i've only seen him once...i travelled to NYC to see him as part of Electric Masada and it was magical.

for unknown reasons he bailed from his opening slot for Fred Frith in boston last december...he never plays this town.

  2. Sugarcubes (~89 ish) - decent band when Bjork was doing the singing, but when the dude took over w/ his angry icelandic rap/shouting/whatever bit (which seemed to be well over half of their songs at the time) it just totally turned me off.

Einar Orn? i saw him a couple of years ago, opening for the Melvins and confounding people in general.

i also saw the Sugarcubes back in the day, and was entertained.

  3. Haha, Jen, actually. But I wish I was Emma. I saw your pics of The Freeze show....there's some good ones there. Punk shows are so much fun to shoot.

I'm not sure I can afford the 5D even at a discount, since it's for personal use. I'm a photographer professionally, but a product photographer. We have a 4x5 with a digital back that we can transfer to a Mamiya handheld camera, and a Canon Rebel xTi for shooting meetings and stuff. But I couldn't swing a 5D. I can "borrow" the Canon lenses we have though, which is why I'm looking at a Canon for myself. I've taken the Rebel to a few shows (shhh...don't tell anybody) and it is leaps and bounds better than the last digital camera I bought for myself....an Olympus E10. It's about 7 years old now. Basically a paperweight. I started bringing the Rebel just to have something, and I get some decent shots, but it's too grainy in low light situations. It's about time I got something new for myself.

    What lenses do you use?

the XTi isn't too bad on high ISO from what i've seen, but it's clearly not in the 5D league. my first digital was the rebel XT and that worked pretty well at 1600.

at any given time, one of these could be mounted to the camera:

    sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye

    canon 35 f/1.4

    canon 50 f/1.4

    canon 85 f/1.8

    canon 135 f/2

    canon 24-70 f/2.8

    canon 70-200 f/2.8

for bigger shows you can't beat the zooms but i use primes a lot since small clubs tend to have poor lighting and your mobility is restricted considerably.

shooting MF at a show would be interesting. :D

and you are right about punk shows being fun to shoot. metal shows, too.

  4. Awesome pics! I've seen other pictures that you've taken before, and thought how "Tinnitus Photography" is the perfect name. Better than my "Visible Rhythm" that I used for concert photography.

What do you shoot with? You get such great shots...are they mostly using available stage light? I'm looking to upgrade my camera, and I need a digital with the speed to capture detail in low light. I see yours does pretty well!

EDIT: I see on your site that you're using a 5D, and some of the ones from last year are using a 30D. I can REALLY see the difference. Your pics speak volumes for the 5D! I'm looking at the 50D right now.

thanks Emma (er Mrs Peel if you prefer ;) ) -

i recently sold my 30D since i got the new 5D mkII and it's an outstanding camera...shooting @ 3200ISO is not a problem, and i've been at 6400 a fair bit recently. however, the 5D is a great camera in its own right, and you could likely get a used copy for fairly short $ these days as people upgrade and/or stock is depleted.

whenever possible i don't use flash, but for the occasional metal or punk show it can be fun (esp longer shutter drags).

  5. I only own 2 of his discs (Knock Knock and A River Ain't Too Much To Love), but like them both A LOT.

I really need to get more Smog.

"River Guard" and "Drinking At the Damn" are 2 of my favorite songs.

"river guard" is awesome...Callahan's got a great songwriting style and delivery.

i would heartily recommend getting _Doctor Came At Dawn_...it's very bleak, but what a statement.

  6. Any recommendations on the best 3 or 4 of these?

if you like acoustic stuff, certainly get _Trains_ and _Eye_

i would also recommend _Ole! Tarantula_ for the new stuff ("New York Doll" is simply awesome) and _Gotta Let This Hen Out_ is a great live record and a good cross-section of his stuff to that date, including some Soft Boys songs.

  7. 17 Pygmies (savage republic offshoot)

christine 23 onna (angel'in heavy syrup offshoot)

    5ive style (tortoise offshoot)

    3Ds (awesome kiwi band)

18th Dye (good 90s german band who recently reunited for some shows)

    28th Day (barbara manning's 1st band)

    100 Flowers (Urinals/Trotsky Icepick offshoot)

17 Hippies (euro band who has recorded w/ marc ribot)

and while not a number, how about add n to (x) ;)

  8. The jerks in front of us snorted cocaine off the railing (RIGHT IN FRONT OF SECURITY) and then tried picking a fight with me. They settled down around halfway through Neil's set, but they almost ruined my night.

    unreal.

after i was done shooting Neil, i stashed my camera gear @ house services and headed back into the venue. i almost had the very unfortunate timing of being between a trash bin and an about-to-puke guy, but luckily i sidestepped and he held his spew until he got closer.

i also saw security carry a comatose woman out of the GA area as i was entering it. why do people get so legless after spending a good chunk of $ for a band i would assume they came to see?
