that's my point exactly. also, i'm making no point about 'capitalism shriveling up because of me'. don't know where you got that.
just because you think that U2/Bruce/whoever is playing the enormo-dome has made enough money and shouldn't charge that much for a ticket, obviously others disagree w/ you, so your one man boycott isn't too effective, is it?
or do you think the gubbmint should put laws in place to throttle back their greed?

also, i can see bands having some sort of subscriptions service where you pledge 10 bucks a month and get a bunch of shit.
at least two band (Einsturzende Neubaten and Throwing Muses/50 Foot Wave/Kristin Hersh) already do this.
also, big bands make to much money...U2, springsteen, neil young. all of them could tour and give away their music for free for the rest of their lives and would still die with millions in the bank while the rest of us drop almost $200 to see a show and the ridiculous hassle it is to see such a show.so who gets to decide how much money is enough? you? yes, you do. by not buying a ticket and going to the show. but that's the extent of yr influence. i don't think capitalism will shrivel up and die because of you.

have they taken a respite on the GBV message board from bragging about how drunk they are to talk about this?
drunken posting is accepted.
-
Wow, that list is a thread in itself.
it's already a topic on a couple of other boards i frequent.

maybe I'm misinterpreting the writer's point, but I've never heard a band who sounded remotely like early R.E.M.
it's key to understand that the author is a big Guided By Voices fan, and that GBV's first record _Forever Since Breakfast_ sounds a LOT like early REM...
also, it sounds like you might not have heard any Miracle Legion or Winter Hours.

Ryan Adams apparently covered The Strokes' Is This It back in 2002 on a fourtrack in his basement. He supposedly redid the album in a bluesy style. I've never heard it though and I'm pretty sure it's never surfaced yet. I would love to hear it though.
Redd Kross (or at least Steve MacDonald) added bass to White Stripes' _White Blood Cells_ and called it _Redd Blood Cells_

Was that at the ICA in Boston? I thought about going but never made it.
BTW, I saw your Throwing Muses photos and thought they were great. I also thought the show was great.
yeah, it was at the ICA...i've only seen Galaxie 500 once, and was never a huge fan of Luna but that night was really really good...i'll probably spring for the DVD when it comes out.
thanks for the kind words re: the throwing muses.

i went to the Dean and Britta Warhol Screen Tests the other night (they play songs while a projected film of one of Warhol's screen tests focuses on a person's face) and it was amazingly good...Dean's always had a pretty deep VU streak in his playing and songwriting and they were the perfect band for this project.

Clawhammer did Devo's 1st record. and Japancakes did MBV's _Loveless_ recently.

"Farewell Transmission"
/end thread.
well to be fair, he's got more than one great song. but that one is outstanding.
-
First time i'd seen them...fun stuff, but irish jig music isn't totally my thing. i respect the band and their talents, though.

well, tweedy can't 'really sing' either if we're comparing to opera singers. BUT, tweedy does know how to sound good with his voice and does not make a mockery of himself.
i'm not sure how closely you've followed Oldham's career, but it's pretty clear to me that self-mockery isn't among his objectives. he does have a different outlook from most, however.

Weekend At Bernie's?
btw, here are my top 5 favorite GBV records, in order:
alien lanes
propeller
bee thousand
under the bushes, under the stars
isolation drills
their singles from ~'93 to '96 were also unstoppable.
-
thanks. also, say hi to the rest of you lemmings.
just because he's not a technically accurate opera singer doesn't mean some people can't appreciate his art.
as david berman once said "All my favorite singers couldn't sing."
i haven't seen Will since the _Viva Last Blues_ tour, and i am looking forward to seeing him again.

i've seen the Cure three times (Kiss Mex3 tour; Disintegration tour; last year) and they were remarkable each time. not loads of stage energy, but they had a great set list each time and played a lot of stuff really well.

Daryl Hall has a giant head.
-
mudhoney, last year...i'd seen them once in '91 or so but had no real idea that they could still blow people away effortlessly 16 years later.
mercury rev were particularly awesome @ ATP as well.
-
i will admit to fair ignorance of both songbooks, but to my ears there's a pretty high sonic similarity of vocal tone and emotional range.
-
Probably dead for a fair portion of it.
only to be reincarnated:

two bands who i violently hated during their performance:
bound stems
shapes and sizes

I think these are the only bands/artists I've seen multiple times, not counting tiny local Tampa bands:
Guided by Voices (12)
you don't happen to love The Wedding Present, do you?

when i was in high school i had a ticket to see Elvis Costello @ the spfld civic center...this must have been around '82 or '83...the show was canceled and never rescheduled. the police were also playing that same night in hartford and i'm thinking elvis has poor ticket sales. that sucked.

surefire winners:
Beach House - 1st record
Labradford - Mi Media Naranja
Tim Sparks/Marc Ribot/Bill Frisell - Masada Guitars

your quote was taken a little of out context i thought (trying too hard to paint the owner as an arrogant asshole); the point i took away was that he played stuff he liked, and people would take note of it, and if they liked it, order it (see the comment about Chet Baker).
hell, if i owned a record store, i would play music i liked. wouldn't you?
btw, i was down in Atlanta for the Scion Rock Fest and caught the in-store performances the day before @ Criminal. i thought that was a hell of a record store...i didn't get to browse too much, but really liked what i saw, and the fact that they can hold in-store performances like that is totally great.
