  1. i was at the show as well, thought it was fantastic. what a great band he's got assembled, especially emmett and jim white. loved some of the arrangements. thanks for the setlist!

i really wanted to shoot this show, but drag city said will wasn't granting photo passes and to just be discreet...well, after shooting @ the wilbur WITH a photo pass for mogwai and dealing w/ their headaches, it wasn't worth it. oh well.

  2. So what is the best music mag to get now? MOJO? Q? Magnet? Under the Radar?

i get Mojo and Uncut, but they are expensive and there's a lot of overlap between the two, so i should just pick one (probably Mojo).

i used to get Wire, but couldn't keep up. i really miss Comes With A Smile...that was a fantastic mag. Plan B is also pretty good though i've not gotten around to subbing.

why is it that UK mags are so much better than US ones?

disclaimer - i used to contribute to Skyscraper (now online-only), and still do w/ The Big Takeover.

  3. I have done. I saw them live once (opening for King Missile, of all things). They were great. I have two of their records, one I really like (Meridian) and the other I don't like as much (The Cosmodemonic Telegraph Company...on that one, Lisher does sort of fall into the guitar exercises trap I mentioned earlier).

_breakfast on the beach of deception_ kinda spans those two..._The Insect God_ is also pretty good.

i didn't like Lisher's solo record at all.

  4. I've always thought the guy in Camper Van Beethoven was/is a fantastic guitarist. His playing on Key Lime Pie is so supportive of the songs, and does not fall into the typical trap of scale patterns or other guitaristic exercises.

Greg Lisher! and Chris Pedersen is a fantastic drummer too.

  5. "Love" was their best, with "Electric" as runner-up. "Sonic Temple" was not bad. Back in the '80s, I thought The Cult had the potential to be the Hegelian synthesis of hippie music and punk that would rule the world. It took me a long time to get into "Electric" - I thought at the time it was a serious step backwards, but now I appreciate its straightforward-rockness.

_Dreamtime_ is a ton better than _Sonic Temple_...if you've not heard that one, seek it out.

  6. donald 'buck dharma' roeser [blue oyster cult]- crafts the finest solos ever...listen to 'last days of may' and tell me i'm wrong

jon mcgeoch [magazine, siouxsie/banshees, public image] - woefully underrated player...best of the 80s? maybe.

john fahey - singlehandedly created the new primitive america genre. amazingly skillful, and not afraid to do new things.

marc ribot [tom waits, elvis costello, robert plant, john zorn, solo] - master of all styles, incredibly skilled wrt to melody and emotion.

thurston moore/lee renaldo [sonic youth] - impossible to credit one and not the other...revolutionized the way guitars are used and abused, or at least brought those methods to a larger audience. always a treat to see play live.

  7. Yeah, I'm surprised by there not being a show anywhere in New England. I probably would've gone for it, since it would be an easier trip for me than DC or Richmond.

my guess is that they will hit New England on the tail end of whatever European shows they do.

  8. Smog - Be Hit
