mudhoney, last year...i'd seen them once in '91 or so but had no real idea that they could still blow people away effortlessly 16 years later. mercury rev were particularly awesome @ ATP as well.

i will admit to fair ignorance of both songbooks, but to my ears there's a pretty high sonic similarity of vocal tone and emotional range.

Who are the 5 best live bands you've ever seen?
tinnitus photography replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
i saw one of the early Workbook shows and i've never seen a performer so venomous...Mould had a great band too, Anton Fier on drums, Tony Maimone on bass and the guy from the dB's on guitar. killer. i like your style. i love all of those bands, but unfortunately have only seen The Church and Husker Du once a piece. -

insanely jealous. i've only seen him once...i travelled to NYC to see him as part of Electric Masada and it was magical. for unknown reasons he bailed from his opening slot for Fred Frith in boston last december...he never plays this town. -
Do you attend concerts alone?

i'd say its the norm rather than the exception for me. -

probably either sonic youth or neil young, both around 10 times. maybe giant sand as well, but Howe hasn't played boston in quite some time...robyn hitchcock could also be a contender. -
my review and photos of last Monday's show...solid band!: http://www.gigwise.com/reviews/live/49848/...Paradise-Boston more here (click on the photos)

this is a question which can't be answered with just 5 responses...i've seen way too many great performances to whittle it down to five, but if that's the price of entry here goes: butthole surfers neil young john zorn (masada quartet) the jesus lizard the verlaines -
Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane

the XTi isn't too bad on high ISO from what i've seen, but it's clearly not in the 5D league. my first digital was the rebel XT and that worked pretty well at 1600. at any given time, one of these could be mounted to the camera: sigma 15mm f/2.8 fisheye canon 35 f/1.4 canon 50 f/1.4 canon 85 f/1.8 canon 135 f/2 canon 24-70 f/2.8 canon 70-200 f/2.8 for bigger shows you can't beat the zooms but i use primes a lot since small clubs tend to have poor lighting and your mobility is restricted considerably. shooting MF at a show would be interesting. and you are right about punk shows be -

thanks Emma (er Mrs Peel if you prefer ) - i recently sold my 30D since i got the new 5D mkII and it's an outstanding camera...shooting @ 3200ISO is not a problem, and i've been at 6400 a fair bit recently. however, the 5D is a great camera in its own right, and you could likely get a used copy for fairly short $ these days as people upgrade and/or stock is depleted. whenever possible i don't use flash, but for the occasional metal or punk show it can be fun (esp longer shutter drags). -
i had their cover of "Shakin' All Over" come up on my ipod today. i can't believe i only saw that band once.

i really like Loren (MazzaCane) Connors' guitar playing, and it can fit squarely and securely in the minimalism camp.

i did, thanks.

"river guard" is awesome...Callahan's got a great songwriting style and delivery. i would heartily recommend getting _Doctor Came At Dawn_...it's very bleak, but what a statement.

i just spent last weekend w/ a ton of metal bands...the Scion Rock Fest was an unmitigated success. though probably my favorite current metal band (Electric Wizard) wasn't on the bill... full galleries: http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/scion-rock...atlanta-photos/ http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/scion-rock-fest-atlanta/ some larger shots...(and more on my site) Pig Destroyer: Trash Talk: High On Fire: 1349: Mastodon:

if you like acoustic stuff, certainly get _Trains_ and _Eye_ i would also recommend _Ole! Tarantula_ for the new stuff ("New York Doll" is simply awesome) and _Gotta Let This Hen Out_ is a great live record and a good cross-section of his stuff to that date, including some Soft Boys songs. -
