i gotta say that the $40 for a yearly subscription to the NYT Cooking app/site is well worth it.
i did a chorizo/lentil dish a few weeks ago that was really good, and changed it up a bit last night and also cooked chicken thighs. the garlic noodle recipe is great, and i really liked the shrimp and mango tacos too.
this is a great cookbook too... the honey/hoisin chicken thighs are truly great, and be sure to cook extra because that soup... oh my god that soup.https://www.amazon.com/Vietnamese-Food-Any-Day-Recipes/dp/0399580352

just back from seeing High On Fire and Doomriders. the metal gods smiled upon Boston tonight (well, Cambridge).

it would have really been funny had Pitchfork re-reviewed some random album and changed the score from say 5.3 to 5.2.

$8 shipping for a 7" definitely steps over into 'this is way too much for postage' territory but my friend wanted a copy too so we split it to $4 each.

Woodsist Records put on a sweet little fest. totally enjoyable (aside from trying to find my camera bag after it got dark).
-
Gimme Shelter (that intro still gives me shivers and i've heard it a million times)
Let It Loose (arguably the best song they ever wrote)
i will think of another soon... "Salt Of The Earth" comes close to making it. -
Thanks! yeah doing two sets w/ a short break is pretty ideal for a band like Yo La Tengo. enjoy the show!

a couple of recent show reviews...

Yo La Tengo continue their reign near the top of the heap. excellent show last night, good mask adherence and proof of vaccine required for entry. i felt entirely comfortable.

nothing says metal like a balding old guy w/ an acoustic guitar.

Been listening to them all morning via Spotify - while cleaning house (Happy Labor Day to all) ---- kind of reminds me of Rush, too - not sure why, but it does.
right on!!

I hear a more early Pink Floyd feel, than the Dead. Interesting stuff. Do/did they ever tour the states?
yeah i meant it more as a 'here's a band that jams the F out' rather than sounding a lot like the Dead, who have more blues/bluegrass and american folk tones in their songs (at least as far as i can tell, i am assuredly no expert on them). If you like that sort of thing, Earthless is another band worth your time and they are from California so they definitely tour the US.
I don't think any of those bands on the label has been over. I did get to see Mythic Sunship at Roadburn in 2019 and they are signed to Tee Pee over here now so maybe! I would love to see Colour Haze too. they had been booked for a Psycho years ago but never made it. -
literally, jams:
https://papir.bandcamp.com/album/jamsthis Danish band is among the best of the current crop of guitar-based psych bands.. no vocals, just white heat. I'm currently listening to the reissue of Stundum, and it's another stunner.

hope some people dig! the record label El Paraiso is chockful of similar goodies, check out Causa Sui as well while you're at it. The latest one (Szabodelico) sounds like they spent the summer surfing w/ Marc Ribot. -

People always ask, but I honestly don’t keep a count. Not really a stats guy that way, plus what do you count — just full-band Wilco, or Jeff solo or Tweedy band or ? Anyway, maybe I’ll do it when I write the book!not that this is anywhere complete but it does log a lot of the shows i've been to... kinda wish there more shows from the 90s added so i could have added them as well. i do add random setlists from time to time as i discover things online.

a few orders of magnitude higher, even.
how many times have you seen them play, at least a few hundred at this point no? -

Good writing, Tim! Enjoyed reading your take. It's interesting to write stuff on here versus for a more "general" audience. I find that it sometimes goes against my journalistic instinct a bit because I'm not explaining some things or assuming a certain level of knowledge.
Thanks Paul!
I do find it a bit of a challenge to review shows of a band I've seen so many times and keep the review fresh.- 1

I'd like to see a double-bill of Fastball and Curve.
and it's now defunct but they could have played at Southpaw.

So, funny story, to me at least. I didn't see an opener announced on the ticket, website, or anything. There was an opener. They said their name, but I didn't catch it. Nice enough jangly pop, none of it recognizable. Then they played "Out Of My Head" by Fastball. They then proceeded to play two more Fastball radio hits. It WAS Fastball.
i always confused them w/ Fastway.

I noticed during S-K's set that there oddly weren't any photographers and actually, now that I think of it, I don't really remember any during Wilco's set either. Why? Has that been an issue there in the past?
not from Wilco... every time i've had to shoot soundboard (Capitol Theatre in Concord NH, Wang in Boston, and now the Pavilion show) it's been venue and not band rules. Some bands (esp older female musicians) specify soundboard shoots though.
edit - I emailed the photographer (mainly to compliment her, i really liked her shots and checked out her website) and she said it was a pit shoot but only from the wings, so Paul that's probably why you didn't notice her. -
just curious... for those at/near the rail, did the venue allow photographers in the security pit area last night?

Not surprised you didn't love the sound. I think it's the worst sounding venue in the area, which is a shame, because it's a nice size/location and the alternative for many bands is Mansfield.
once that MGM venue at Fenway opens, there'll be a ~4500 ppl capacity indoor option.

Thanks for the reminder, Tim! I amended my After The Show post...lol.
sorry i couldn't say hi but they had us way back at the soundboard... seems to be the norm for that place lately, which is maddening. i would have loved to have shot S-K up close.

my bet is that they play Boston Calling. there are no Boston dates announced.
