Sky Blue Sky - Confession of a Relatively New Fan
LaughingDog replied to xTonyWonder's topic in Just A Fan
I probably do; that, and I also loooove talking about Wilco I really do like Sky Blue Sky, I had a pretty long phase with it after having equally long or longer phases with the rest of the Wilco catalog. I've never really found any aspect of Wilco I haven't liked. I don't think there is a single song on any of their albums I just can't listen to. SBS isn't too high on my list though, but that is no indication as for how much I like it. I just happen to like some of their others better. -

I meant it in a way less of a negative connotation than the formal meaning of "shame" - "that's a shame" reads "that's too bad". It's not good per se, but it isn't a judgement on that particular person's character. I'm sorry if it came off that way. I just feel it's too bad that not all hardcore Wilco fans can enjoy all of their albums. :'( I have to admit, I laughed too. I think you misunderstood me, though. I was addressing your point about betrayal and disappointment. Sure, rooting yourself in albums that a particular artist has put out is absolutely the point of music. But whe -

I think that's the one I saw, I can't remember. I know I saw something like that while skimming through. You would probably know better than I do so if there isn't anyone in this thread that said they hated this album and meant it, then my point doesn't stand in regard to any Wilco fan I've seen before... but my sentiments attached with a Wilco fan hating SBS still stand. Never said anyone was a bad person, just said it was a shame. I don't know if I'm able to agree with you lyrically, or maybe musically even. People change - one lone songwriter is simply unable to write about one speci -

Unless one: I read wrong, or two: people were being sarcastic and I read it out of context (dumb on my part), then yes, people have said in this thread they hated this album. If I didn't get true evidence of a Wilco fan saying they hate SBS, I wouldn't have posted. Oh, I can definitely relate to that. I listened to the Sky Blue Sky DVD version of Impossible Germany before hearing the album version, and I honestly couldn't tolerate it for a very long time. I love it now, though, because I find the process being opposite for me. After hearing a song by a band live, I usually really love -

I don't get it... why not? If you are a Wilco lover (and no, this is not read "Being There" lover), you should be able to tolerate anything they put out within reason, really. Some b-sides here and there, sure, but to hate an entire album? Hate implies intolerance, and honestly, saying Sky Blue Sky as an album is intolerable isn't within reason for a Wilco fan. That is my opinion, you have yours. I said it was only "a shame" because people can have opinions and not affect mine - but it is a shame knowing that at a Wilco concert, a few select fans shiver out of disgust when an SBS song is -
This currently as the most plays on TWL for me. Anyone else?

Sky Blue Sky - Confession of a Relatively New Fan

It's too bad for the people who "hate" SBS. There is such a thing as a "last place" Wilco album when I'm making my Wilco list (which is continually changing), but I NEVER hate any Wilco album, ever. Ever. Actually, come to think of it, I don't even hate any Wilco songs. I really, really mean that. I think that's why I love them so much. It's a real shame that fans of Wilco can hate one of their albums so much. -

Similarly, Wilco fans that became fans through SBS would have a hard time believing people got into them through Being There. They'd probably write that off as something as well (I'm not even going to go there...). It's all subjective - the one thread tying it all together is that I think most fans enjoy all of their albums. Some fans like some albums more than others. That's all. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. TWL is dripping with emotion. One Sunday Morning is hands down the most emotional song they've recorded since the GIB sessions. Rising Red Lung, Whole Love, Born Alone, -
Nope, but I understand now. Thanks for that! Real cool.

...I'm going to stay right, with Wilco. -
Yes, extremely introspective and curious. Yes! I loooooved this line ever since listening to I Might... so gritty and perfectly placed. Really love this one, too. I think the lyric is "Mine eyes have seen the fury...", likewise with the repeat in the third bridge: "Mine eyes deceiving glory..." That's what I heard when I listened to it, and it was confirmed-ish when that article was posted about the lyrics to this song: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/09/watch-wilcos-new-born-alone-video-and-read-the-story-behind-its-lyrics/244656/ (for those who missed it) The

Phew, at least one other guy on here's got a similar Wilco taste.
-
Looooove these ones. I could count this as a line, or maybe as a musical moment as a whole - probably my absolute favorite moment on the entire album is at 4:22 of One Sunday Morning, and the lyric "I can hear those bells" and the subsequent piano walk up and bass lick... just tear inducing.
-
Is it one line per post or per person? My knees get weak when Jeff sings this line (my sig):
-
My top 3 favorites off of The Whole Love. The last minute where the drums kick in are just absolutely unreal.
-
Definitely give Black Moon and especially Rising Red Lung some more time. They are definitely not the most immediate, but they are absolutely great and definitely hold their own once you know what to look for in them. Standing O is... I don't know. I'm beginning to like it, though.
-
Don't even say "FLAC" before Sep 27, man.
-
Cool review. Your username looks very familiar - have you posted Radiohead stuff on YouTube? So glad that this album doesn't lose any gas. I want to love this album for a very long time, and to have it grow in my mind as iconically as GIB or YHF has.
-
Yes I'm just shattered that you like something more than me Izz all good McGuffin, some bumpin heads about a band we are all passionate about ain't gonna hurt nobody.
-
Really? I cannot hear that at all. I'm interested, if you care to elaborate! I agree the last minute is great.
-
Oh man, that is GORGEOUS and SO MINE. Any updates on release?
-
Anyone else get a Theologians vibe off this song?? No? Just Me?? Okay
-
Does it? Or does it say more about my taste? If you go back to my list, GIB is at the top... I'd argue you need an infinitely greater attention span for Less Than You Think versus any other song off Being There. I'd probably argue that for Spiders, too. Being There is one of Wilco's strongest albums thematically: yes. It is not one of my favorite themes. What do you want me to say? It's a double album of a side of Wilco I'm not the hugest fan of... Personally, I much prefer to get lost in the soundscapes of YHF or GIB over the hard rockers of Being There, even the introspective slower

I agree, I missed this one the first couple of listens but it's one of my favorites now. The harmonies of "Whoooooole love".... so catchy.
-
OHHHHH, I see where I offended you now, haha. I listed those songs not as examples as to why I disliked the album, but as a sampler of songs I really enjoyed off of it. There's an album's worth (maybe an album and a half) of extremely good songs on Being There, really. It's the pacing, length, and overall lack of depth on most of the really good songs that gets to me. Sorry, I reread what I posted and really should have left Misunderstood out of that sampling right before my comment about the shallowness. Misunderstood is the one (there are a few others) that definitely transcends that ba
