Not sure I agree with that, especially Why Would You Want to Live which is fairly traditional stuff albeit in the wonderful Wilco style.

Just listened to disc 1 of BT again on headphones (for the first time in ages) - sounded amazing. The great thing about The Whole Love being released is that its made me go back and re-evaluate the back catalogue, but BT has been the biggest rediscovery for me, especially disc 1. I think I'll spend a lot of next week concentrating on disc 2 to see if it really is as great as disc 1 and I just cannot hear it. Like I say it's not bad by any means, it just has never grabbed me as much as disc 1.

I got my CD delivered from Play.com on release day last Monday. I'm still waiting on the vinyl that I ordered from Rarewaves.com though, hopefully arrive tomorrow.

Some sensitive souls on here! I love Joy Division, Husker Du and The Smiths (just off the top of my head, I could have listed reams of other bands), but if somebody states they don't like any of them I just shrug my shoulders and think they're missing out on great music, but hey, we can't all like the same stuff, I respect their opinion and forget about it. And before you say anything, I've heard enough of the drivel they released as singles to make my mind up that I don't want to listen to an album by them. And to get back on topic, you have your opinion and I have mine about Being There. Neither of us are right, neither of us are wrong. I'd be interested to hear though from anybody, including yourself, who thinks disc 2 is stronger than disc 1.

I listened to disc 1 last night, and disc 2 this morning. Disc 1 is far and away the best of the two, the 2nd disc is far too patchy imo. Its not crap by any means, just think that they could have added sunken treasure, someday soon, the lonely 1 and maybe dreamer in my dreams and given us a wonderful single disc album.

I second the recommendation about Lift to experience. And without being too pedantic hopefully, saying that Rivers of Babylon is by Boney M is a bit like saying Love Will Tear us Apart is by Paul Young rather than Joy Division. (Rivers of Babylon" is a rastafarian song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians in 1970. The Melodians' original versions of the song appeared in the sound track to the 1972 movie The Harder They Come) Although to be fair 90% of people probably don't know this, and why would they?

Yeah, I did think about including SBS, but a post on the Rank The Albums thread reckoned that after collating the votes in that thread AM and WTA were the two least favourites

Ok, the rank the albums thread got me curious about something. If we agree that WTA and AM are probably the two least favourite albums, do we think they suck in general or just in comparison to the rest? And if we were marking them out of 10 what would we award them? I dont think they suck but I definitely think they do suffer from comparison, because they fall a long way short of the towering heights of YHF/AGIB/S'TEETH and to a lesser extent BT. Depends how high you set the bar! I am loving this more with each and every play, but to me a masterpiece is perfect - YHF for example - and in the case of an album every song needs to be perfect or as near as damn it. The Whole Love includes Capitol City and Standing O, decent enough songs which don't spoil my enjoyment but preclude TWL from masterpiece status in my opinion. Close but no cigar, and just think if we were debating whether SBS and W(TA) were masterpieces you would be laughed.out of court, and for that we should be truly thankful!!

After living with the CD for a few days now I just can't resist and I've now ordered the vinyl, I've just got to hear AOA and OSM on wax!. I guess it comes with a CD so I will have two, which means I can give a copy to my friend. What kind of cover is the CD housed in, does it have artwork like the retail CD or just a bog standard plain white envelope. I've been playing AGIB a lot recently in the run up to the release of TWL, and I just wondered what everyones thoughts on LTYT are? Because of the extended drone I find it a bit frustrating that its placed 2nd last track and would much prefer it was placed after The Late Greats, because if nothing else its got all the hallmarks of a closing track. Part of me actually admires Jeff for placing it where he did on the record, but I find that I just skip the rest of the song when the drone passage kicks in because I am too impatient and want to hear TLG. I really do believe I would play this song

I guess there are just so many review sites out there now and Wilco are a revered and respected band on a critical level so they will get maximum coverage. At this stage of their career I would think Wilco will be absolutely thrilled with the positivity of the majority of the reviews. Even the most critical(if we go by the score)review from Pitchfork appeared to be positive, in fact there is a school of thought that the review merited at least an 8 going by what the guy said but apparently Pitchfork have some communal scoring system in which other writers determine the eventual rating!! 6.9 is actually a fairly decent mark in my opinion, although I would rather they just gave marks of 6, 7 or 8 or whatever, rather than pretentious 6.9, 7.4 etc. I mistakenly used to think that a mark of 6 or 7 meant that an album was poor, but on reflection 6 actually means above average and 7 is normally portrayed as good. 8 probably means very good, 9 means excellent and 10 is a classic. After about a dozen listens I think my opinion just now is that no way is this album is a masterpiece, I doubt even Wilco themselves would claim as much. It's clear that it is a welcome return to form and is a very good album indeed, with two obvious Wilco classics in AOA and OSM. However, two classics and a bunch of good to very good songs doesn't equal a masterpiece. So the jury is still very much out, but those claiming this a masterpiece must have somehow had access to these songs for months, or have listened to it twenty times a day for the last fortnight. Amen to that, although to me it was all down hill after LRP. And they definitely should have split when Bill Berry left. I'm betting 2016 for the reunion tour. (Are there any decent bands apart from The Smiths and Husker Du who havent reformed at some time?)
