  1. Even if it weren't April Fool's, nobody would believe that for a second. Ellsbury is an overhyped product of the media's obsession with Boston, and Bard is nothing. That deal wouldn't get Hanley, not even close. Hell, Pedroia and Ellsbury wouldn't be enough for Hanley. I have a problem.
  2. Team's are starting to look at off the field stuff more and more lately. Michael Oher is probably the single most gifted tackle in the draft, but he might not be a first round pick because of his past, even though he's very rarely had any actual problems. It's all about his upbringing, or lack thereof.
  3. Lot of people wanting him for the marlins. Everytime a former marlin is a fa, people want them...
  4. 2002 world series on ESPN classic. Shawon Dunston vs. Kevin Appier. Awesome.
  5. This has always been their bit. It hasn't been very funny since it came back on the air, save for the Star Wars episode.
  6. A lot of people who follow this kind of stuff are surprised Hanson isn't up with the big club right now. He's probably ready right now, after an absolutely absurd showing in the Arizona Fall League, where he had a .63 ERA with 49 Ks in 28 1/3 innings. He seems like a pretty good bet to be up with the club before long. Morrison is a pretty good bet to at least see some at bats by September, though if the Marlins can't get production out of first base (and right now, first base looks terrible for us) and he's lighting the Southern League up in June, he could get a call up. And Fernando Mart
  7. He was a keeper from last year.
  8. I know for Bonnaroo if you bought tickets early you got a free Spin subscription.
  9. I love the minor league portion of my Auction league draft. We do a snake style for 3 rounds of minor leaguers. I got Tommy Hanson with my first pick (Braves), and am looking for Logan Morrison (Marlins), and Fernando Martinez (Mets).
  10. I think this team really needs a legit sharpshooter on offense. That would do wonders.
  11. Well, people usually only look at home runs when using the eye test, and he hit 243 home runs from age 35 on, that's pretty absurd. Of course, he moved into a favorable hitters, park, but that is what I mean about context. Much of the overall offensive explosion in the 90's came after expansion, and expansion always causes fluctuations in offensive levels for a few years, not to mention the greatest hitters park in the game. Sosa's numbers start to look a little less (a little) ridiculous when you look at what everyone else was doing. Now, I should repeat that he probably did take steroid
  12. Hank Aaron put up pretty absurd numbers late in his career, if you don't look at them in context.
  13. Well, part of Boggs' spike can be explained away by a leaguewide jump of 21 SLG points from 86 to 87, and then a drop of 32 the following season, though it is certainly possible that was the first time many players experimented, and their usage was anomalous enough to cause a spike because the rest of the league hadn't caught up.
  14. I didn't read it until I was in 5th grade, and it was really when I was starting to get into reading. I think you have to be a bit older to really start to appreciate the double meanings and word play in it.
  15. Me too, but we are completely incapable of sustaining an offensive attack or of even holding onto the puck. That's what kills us, really. We get a 2 goal lead in the 3rd and then let the other team just sit in our zone and set up attack after attack. Voukon is good, but he can't do it all on his own.
  16. Actually, if you take into account the fact that Sammy was a major league regular by the age of 20 and had his peak years during what you would expect to be a player's peak (28-32, as opposed to 34-37 for schilling, 32-37 for McGwire, or 27-39 for Bonds), his career progression isn't that off. He actually hit more home runs than 2B every year from 24-36. His career is only really anomalous because of the dumb amount of home runs he hit, not the progression he followed. His career follows a pretty standard progression except that it has an unusual, though not impossible spike in the prime. An
  17. The Panthers shitted all over their playoff chances the last 2 weeks. Fuck. We can't close games out.
  18. That's a good point, the wordplay may not work. I'd like to see someone really talented try to do it though, just because it's my favorite book ever.
  19. I want to see a really well done live action version of the Phantom Tollbooth. Someone get on it.
  20. Most player's careers follow some type of curve that peaks around 27-31 and steadily declines from there. Curt's best years were age 34, 36, 37. he struck out 300+ batters at 30, 31, and 35. His point was just that there are other players (not necessarily Bonds) who people have been suspicious of because of a late career peak, and that Schilling isn't one of them. Again, he wasn't saying Schilling did or didn't, just that there are always going to be some players for a variety of reasons who will never have that suspicion. Is there any proof that Sosa took steroids? His career is no less
  21. He got caught in the mitchell report and has been combative and an asshole his whole career.
