  1. So this thread inspired me to dial up some Beatles on the iPod last night on my way home. Here are a few more Abbey Road moments: The wind chime/church bell sound when Paul sings, "Oh that magic feeling" in You Never Give Me Your Money. Like the sound is demonstrating that magic feeling, and thereby creating a magic feeling in the listener. Genius. "Keeps a ten bob note up his nose" in Mean Mr. Mustard. That Lennon, what a card. The first few chords of Polythene Pam. Lennon going, "Look out," before the segue into She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. And then the guitar work on tha
  2. Anyone get into any of the somewhat Wilco-related bands like Swag (featuring Ken Coomer), or Healthy White Baby, with Laurie Stirratt? Those qualify as fairly obscure, I would think.
  3. Not the Bridgegate jokes thread I was expecting... "Exit 37, next to the Hojo and the Arco..."
  4. They were looking like they would break through nationally for a while. I saw them at a health food store called Cheese 'n Stuff when it was just the two sisters. Good times.
  5. I found Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty on my shelf a while back. My ex-wife loved that band, and I guess she forgot to take it when she left.
  6. Here are a few I have discovered over the years...no particular order. Bands: Royal Trux Circuit Riders Swans Catfish Jenkins Augie March 3osity (jazz) Hank Dogs Kula Shaker The Nields The Bevis Frond For Stars Solo artists: David Behrman Patty Larkin Jonatha Brooke Kate Rusby Kendra Smith Tom Cochrane Kate Wolf Miranda Lee Richards Cassandra Wilson
  7. How about the last note of A Day in the Life? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Day_in_the_Life I could swear I hear someone going, "Sh!" after the papers rustling. Always loved that.
  8. Uh oh... Meet the anti-Hillary. http://news.yahoo.com/democratic-presidential-hopeful-can-t-think-of-anything-positive-to-say-about-obama-230031884.html
  9. I was going to do that, but I forgot which song it was. All I could think of was "Help," but I knew it wasn't that one. Dain bramage. Thanks for jogging my memory.
  10. Maybe when they get old, they'll start breaking out some cool obscurities. Kinda like Paul McCartney on this last tour, doing "All Together Now" and "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Wait, aren't these dudes already ancient as hell? They look like that guy on Duck Dynasty.
  11. Kirsten Gillibrand, not really. She started out as a Blue Dog and has become more of a progressive. How much of that is pure calculation, well, the jury is out on that. I love what she has to say, but hell, she's a politician who started as a lawyer (weird, eh?), so who knows if she's really serious or going whichever way the wind blows. Probably considered too liberal to win the nomination, but then, so was Obama. Martin O'Malley seems kind of generic, but who knows? It would be weird if Hillary got the nomination, if only because the "it's my turn now" thing is what Republicans do, not D
  12. Damn, we really derailed this thread. You're right, of course. He was only 27. I just meant that, if you examine his career as a whole, the peak was '67 or '68 at the latest. If he had lived, there might have been an upward trajectory. I personally feel like he got a little lost, what with too much touring, feeling like a circus act, the drugs, etc. Personally, I like the jams with Larry Young on organ best out of all his later stuff. That shit rules.
  13. So if we look at the lineup, we got Hillary, Biden, maybe Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Cuomo, and a couple other dark horse candidates. Jerry Brown is still a possible candidate, not that he would ever win. On the Republican side, it's Christie - assuming his handlers can tell him "You got this, big guy," by then - but who else? Huckabee, Cruz, Santorum, Perry, Jindal, Jeb, Walker, Rand, and maybe Rubio? Trying to picture these debates... In spite of the Republicans having so many options, it still looks good for Hillary. Get ready to hear the name Benghazi spewed out a few thousand more times
  14. I love Hendrix, but for me, the first two albums are the best, and then Electric Ladyland is a mixed bag. Everything after that is a really mixed bag. I know A-man would disagree, but a lot of the later stuff sounds the same. Hey Baby, Earth Blues...I think those two are pretty much interchangeable. Many of those songs are forgettable, especially compared to Purple Haze, Spanish Castle Magic...you know, all the stuff Jimi got tired of playing. Sorry, but the involvement of Buddy Miles really dragged Jimi down, IMO. He was always a little under-confident about his vocals, and then Buddy was
  15. I love how there's this (originally) unexpected crowd noise at the beginning of Sgt. Pepper and then that first note just crashes in. I love the Anthology version of "Across the Universe." The whole thing, not just a moment. I love the part in "A Day in the Life" when the orchestra spins up to its crescendo and stops. Then the moment when you hear the alarm clock. Then the moment when Paul's vocal kicks in. That whole thing is just filled with so many brilliant moments. I love the harmonies on "Rain." That should be a song in the Songs You Can Listen to Multiple Times in a Row thread.
  16. JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters by James W. Douglass
  17. That would be a good place for it. Although, I did just post in there that he peaked before 1969, so what the heck.
  18. I was thinking of his solo career. I like Route and Drown. The rest is kind of so-so for me. I think LouieB wrote on here that Jay keeps writing the same song over and over. I can relate to that point of view. If you only like Tusk, you might want to explore some earlier incarnations before the Buckingham/Nicks era! Big Star, I like the songs that Wilco covered. I haven't heard any crap from them, but I haven't gotten into them yet. And I have given them a fair shot.
  19. That is amazing. Then again, it makes sense: summer in MN must last for about 3 days! My favorite memories of growing up in CT involve going to the shore and enjoying the sun and surf.
  20. These are all very worthy candidates. I (perhaps unfairly) disqualified the Beatles' solo careers, as they were not debuting as artists on those records. Otherwise, hard to ignore those guys.
  21. Before the days of easy downloads, I started to collect all of Bowie's early studio discs from one of those disc-of-the-month subscriptions. I think I have everything up through Heroes. That's borderline hardcore, right? I could make a long list for this thread: Green Day Phil Collins The Guess Who Badfinger April Wine Wilson Pickett Emilie Mover Stevie Wonder Eurythmics Feist Patsy Cline Hot Tuna Big Star Jay Farrar REM The Walkmen They Might Be Giants Oasis Television The Band Seriously, my list of artists who I like a lot of would be much shorter.
  22. Ding ding ding! We have a winner. I wish I could unsee that.
  23. It's in the 60s today and we are complaining a bit around the office. Lows in the 40s for the next 4-5 nights. WTF? Is it March yet? I want to go back to shorts and short sleeves every day... I moved here in 1994, and never wanted to live anywhere else until I went to southeast Asia. Beautiful weather there, too, and the prices on things are pretty darn amazing. Still, I will stay here in the Sunshine State until retirement. Some of the best beaches in the country, and I like living in a purple state. Feels less insular than my (home) blue state, but I would feel like an alien in a red sta
